I’ve never understood this infinite loop thinking. Why is it meaning to create new people who in turn will have to create new people to derive meaning for themselves?

Can’t you say this for every activity that humans undertake? As a cleaner, you have a very clear purpose: to clean toilets so that you can make money to provide for your family. People can feel a sense of purpose for almost anything, but the fact the you theoretically could come up with a purpose for an activity doesn’t mean they automatically have the sense of it.

Did you feel like this before having kids as well?

I am vehemently against the concept of getting kids (that is, when it comes to myself; you do you) and sometimes hear people say that they reasoned the same way until they actually had kids. My only question then is how they ended up having kids? Sure, mistakes can happen, but for someone like me to have kids would be like someone who said they really, really never wanted to go to India to somehow end up there.

What I’m trying to say is that there probably is a self-selection bias going on here: People who says that getting children gives you purpose are probably people who were quite positive towards the idea of getting them in the first place. But does that mean it is good advice for people in general, including people who are very skeptical? What other activity/life goal works this way? Lifting weights at the gym? Going on a trip around the world? Trying BDSM?

Exactly this. I’m of the option that you have to spend at least a couple of hours in deep conversation with most people in order to even think about calling them an asshole, despite them writing what to you feels like obnoxious texts. It’s not intellectually honest to throw around the asshole judgement whenever you read a sentence that upsets you.

What point does it defeat and why? I’m assuming that you’re talking about evolution here, where having your own kids rather than taking care of someone else’s have been adaptive, but that’s just like saying that the point of a large rock on a beach is to be so large as to not be swept into sea by the waves.

When saying “it’s profitable to lay someone off”, isn’t it implied that it’s profitable in a long-term perspective? Otherwise, it would according to the definition to be profitable to lay someone of as soon as they take their first lunch break.

If you feel like this, you shouldn’t take a job that can’t guarantee in writing that they will keep you for X number of years. If you took a calculated risk and took the job anyway, well that’s on you.

Those things are nice, but individually they each only have an expected value of maybe a couple of extra years of living time. Contrast that to curing ageing that would put that number in the hundreds or thousands.

So the solution is to have the equivalent of a mass genocide in old people? I would much, much, much rather be alive in a fucked up world than dead in a nice world.

Most people writing in this comment section at the time of writing didn't have all the facts. It would have been much better if they held off commenting until today when we know much, much more. That was my only request. Was that unreasonable?

That's great that it was clearified. _Now_ we can actually have a discussion about it rather than reacting based on assumptions and guesses, which was taking place when I wrote my comment. That was all that I asked for.

Did I express an opition on Elon Musik? I was just urging people to wait for the facts before getting all hyped up. Is that too much to ask for? If all the news here would be posted with a one week lag or so, we would all have a much more fruitful discussion than what we have now where people are reacting instinctively with their own guesses of what happened.

Take a breath, wait for a while, see if the ban stands (or if it was some technical fluke), see if Twitter/Elon Musk comes with an official statement regarding this matter. Right now, it just seems like all of HN are having a gigantic confirmation bias session together.

It might have lost short-term gamblers a lot of money, yes. But if you lose money through gambling, the only person you should blame is yourself.

If you’re an investor who’s in it for the long run, I don’t see what today’s stock price has to do with anything though. You can’t use the current stock price as an answer to what the stock is worth.

He failed at Full Self Driving

His time plan might have failed, but that doesn’t mean that full self driving has failed. That’s like if I said: “I’m going to make 10 million dollars by the end of next week”, and then people would call me a failure for only making 5 million in a week.

Or do you mean that full self driving actually has failed, not taking into account any time plans? I think the full self driving capabilities of Teslas are downright incredible. Not fully ready for robotaxi territory, but extremely impressing.

That’s a really strange definition of “scam”. I would simply define a scam as something where you’re promised to receive something (a certain token, a token that is backed up by something, a promise of future work, et cetera), and then don’t receive it (either now or in the future).

If I simply create a meme token and sell it to someone who speculates that it will increase in value, I don’t see how that can be considered a scam.

Yes, when you add a token manually, you’re warned that anyone can add a token and that you should exercise caution.

Remember that you can be aware of something being a scam but still trade it, since you believe that the thing won’t collapse just yet. A very risky behavior of course, but it doesn’t mean that you have been scammed yourself.

I've changed the settings on my iPhone so that calls are shown like notifications like everything else. So no more taking over the whole screen.

This is one of the reasons why I always let the phone hoover a couple of centimeters from my face when talking to someone. Utterly ridiculous!

I very often have my Sony earbuds connected to my iPhone, but I don't really like talking through them, so when I get a call, I usually just pop them out and then select that the audio should come from the phone speaker, which works. But then, just 10-15 seonds afterwards, if I haven't put my earbuds in their case (which I might not have been able to do yet), they will reconnect, hence switching the call back to them. And this dance continues until I manage to find the case or simply give up.

To me, this makes no sense. I could understand that the phone might think that I want to switch to my headphones if I take them out of their case during my call, but why switch back to the headphones that I've actively chosen not to use just a moment ago when I haven't even put them back in the case in between?
