I'd imagine that in some ways people would be happier since their entire existence would just be predicated by workflow, but that's just an offshoot hypothesis.

Their allegations don't explain volpacolypse though, which is the really interesting and somewhat of a gray swan scenario.

I'm afraid that I'm essentially nitpicking here, but the games don't really compare that linearly.

For one, "insane micro" was around before SC2 and was more of a deciding factor in BW than SC2. For instance, if you pay attention and analyze pro games you'll notice that macro (the boring repetitive work) that you think was flushed out from BW was actually just translated into other, equally monotonous tasks in SC2. Also, SC2's fights (outside of early skirmishes) are MUCH more based around creating concaves or fighting in favorable positions, and not actual micro. In BW micro is far more of a deciding factor in fights. (see: any pro-game fight consisting of supply over approximately 120 aka deathball)

Another thing, MarineKingPrime didn't really "invent" marine micro, he just excelled at it. And SlayerS isn't a player, it's a team name.

For the last part regarding optimal resource management and exploring timings and makeups, build orders have been virtually completely fleshed out and maximized. There really isn't much that say, 1000 APM (just a stupidly high impossible number to represent computer APM) could do that 300 APM (pro player human APM) couldn't in terms of gaining an early advantage in build orders.

To be fair, they did address this concern under the 'Operating Leverage in Our Business' section where they said that they may look for another third party to rely on for cloud computing or they build their own infrastructure.

"We have committed to spend $2 billion with Google Cloud over the next five years and have built our software and computer systems to use computing, storage capabilities, bandwidth, and other services provided by Google Cloud, some of which do not have an alternative in the market. We are currently negotiating an agreement with another cloud provider for redundant infrastructure support of our business operations. Its obvious that there's a ton of money in selling people's information for advertising, but I don't think that people are even that angry that their information is being sold so much as they aren't aware of what information is being sold. I think that it'd be interesting to see more transparency in selling of information so that target advertising can still be easily done which allowing the users to actively choose one product over another if they don't want their email addresses being given out as compared to cookies for search relevancy or something along those lines.

I totally understand your points of sometimes the point justifies the attention grabbing. But I also think that other measures might be worth taking other than flaming - like I often see the use of swears in titles to grab attention and help convey the importance of the subject, I think that alternative measures would be much more reasonable and still achieve the same goal.

I am not saying that he is not correct or that he is wrong in trying to enlighten Felipe, I just think he could have been more respectful. If his explanation of his reasoning and logic tends to look more like flame than an explanation I think it should be time to save the email and go do something else for a bit. I also think that posting this and getting it attention as a 'look at this guy, he got flamed!' bit is silly as well.

I was in no way saying that it was the victim's fault. I just don't think that Kickstarter should be on the receiving end of a lot of criticism until we get the full story from them. It may very well be that they are under the impression that that it is her fault, although I am not saying it is, it is just plausible and would account for their reaction to her ban.

I don't think that it is necessarily fair to be extremely critical of Kickstarter. I think that we should consider the viewpoint of the respondent to her, he probably thinks that she in some way caused the stalker to spam her project. I agree 100% that this problem should be fixed - but I don't think that Kickstarter would intentionally ban her account for this situation if they had the full story, and now that it has come to light I hope that apologies are made and this situation is corrected.

This may sound extremely silly - but I'd love to have a desktop organizer application. Like I could decide to segment my desktop into 4 equal areas: games, pictures, applications, work-related. And then there could be a spot in the middle with an unsorted aspect. I could then click every item in the unsorted category and decide which category if any I wanted them in.

It would also be neat to have options on how many segments you wanted, the size of them, location, that sort of thing.

I'm not saying everyone wants this - maybe this will spur you into thinking of something else innovative. I just think that it's really annoying to drag and drop icons on my desktop as is - and an application could potentially make that easier.

Probably 7 hours a day, this is pretty depressing.

Maybe someone in the a country that can receive the messages might be kind enough to report the person for you? This may be past your preference of getting personal with someone over the internet - adding them on FB and all - but I don't see why it wouldn't work in reporting the person, assuming you can't contact them about reporting the person via email or any other professional form.

I think that you are correct in many ways:

It addresses the point of people being afraid to express themselves because there is almost always a large mass of objects to pin - so you should feel more comfortable pinning something that you may or may not be secure about your friend's agreeing with. If someone was to think "Wow, those shoes are ugly" and you had it pinned - hey, it's a huge pinboard and I'm sure they agree with more things about you than they disagree.

It's also a complete positive board - much like the like system is, there isn't a way to track how many people don't like something - so there's safety in numbers of pinning something someone else already has pinned.

I think that something innovative that could possibly be added towards the pinning system is to allow people to add their own tags to the objects that you can pin - and allow people to add the pins to their own groups - and allow these groups to be reviewed publicly like a portfolio. It would be much easier to obtain information about people who like groups of specific objects then. (Assuming this isn't already done - I'm not a Pinterest user myself.)

I agree 100% that you should receive a notification that your account is blackholed. After reading this and still being new to HN I am a tad terrified now that I might one day be blackholed and not even realize it.

I love using Grooveshark and would HATE to see this happen. This would be even worse than when they started playing the loud video ads that would keep cycling.

This is what I was trying to convey - I guess he's the big winner!

I'm a grade 12 student right now taking computer classes and have had speakers come in and talk to our class.

My opinion on this matter is that the actually starting with some hands on material is much better than explaining a programming process. Mostly because beginner programming is fairly easy to understand without learning a proper process - and I'm not saying that proper process isn't important, it very much so is - I'm saying that it would probably be a lot more enjoyable to actually have them solve simple solutions first.

I find that my favorite part as someone with still much to learn about programming is the ability to find my own neat solutions and try to make them work.

That would be interesting and troublesome at some intersects - because there are posts that are brought back up after a long period of time - maybe there should be a limit on the number of posts you can downvote within a period of time if they belong to the same person?

I think it would be funny if you started out blocked by everyone since you are the owner, sort of a joke at Tom from Myspace.

Most long-term forum members of any forum tend to think that the forum is degrading over time. I don't know why, and I'm not accusing anyone of being a certain way, it's just a pattern that I've noticed and want to point out, although I have no explanation for it.

I think that HN is set up to only be as 'good' as the users, and I know that this is true of any community, but there are still issues that often spur from differing opinions no matter how awesome the community is. I believe that the best way to combat something that you don't approve of is to just ignore it. I think that the comments that people consider unfit for HN are few and when ignored will make the poster consider changing his posting technique to gain more popularity and give weight to his words, because after all we all want to be heard. That being said, is the present that much different from the past?
