I’ve studied Afro-Cuban percussion for 28 years now and I can tell you from experience there are some bata rhythms that definitely make the listener enter into a heavy trance state. Haitian vodun drumming is especially designed for generating trance and out of body experiences in its entirety. If you can find an old recording of Haitian voodoo drums give it a listen using good headphones with your eyes closed, and after about twenty minutes you will enter an altered state.

I’m an entrepreneur who has founded multiple startups. I love to kiteboard, snowboard and play drums in my spare time.
Most of the best boards don’t come off factory presses instead they are built by someone with great passion in a small warehouse or garage. These guys are happy just getting by and sharing the stoke with customers they know. Moreover, once you become addicted to surfing that’s all one cares about. True surfers don’t care about the hype around the latest thing, once you buy your board and a wetsuit all you care about is getting that glide. If I didn’t have a family to support I’d make the yearly circuit from Sri Lanka, Peru, etc and just live on the beach for less than $10 a day and would be perfectly satisfied. I feel sorry for my office mates who don’t have any hobbies or escapes and instead are focused on the next bonus or promotion either for their egos or so they can buy more stuff. I just want more time off to travel with my family and surf. After 3 startups and 23 years in tech and many, many 12 hour days I can tell you the whole system is empty. Despite recognition or financial success there’s nothing in the system that brings true long term happiness, but the natural meditation when waiting on the wave or for the next set does.
I have ADD and consider myself somewhat successful (top 2% income earner) but always beat myself up for what I could achieve. My career has mostly been a long string of failures with me being extremely “lazy” but with a few home runs which is what I’m known for. I don’t really “work” more than 8 hours a week until I get passionate about something and then I crank on it without break until the kindling has been lit where then I hand it to others for the day to day. ADD has been very hard on my marriage too.
By 2030: 1. Nigeria and/or Kenya's GDP will surpass that of the UK. 2. Global births will rapidly decline in all but the poorest nations. Data will show that "Peak Child" is near and will occur around 2040. 3. 4 day work weeks for salaried employees will be commonplace amongst large corporations. 4. A new search engine disrupting our commonplace search behaviors will be on its way to disrupting Google 5. The average Bachelor of Science degree in the USA will cost >$180,000 at a public university
I love the new look and am curious about if the exoskeleton has crumple points to reduce the kinetic energy imparted to the passengers during a collision.
Yes. I have been lucky enough to attend two Theravada retreats in Thailand. However, the practice of daily meditation and adherence to the 5 precepts (not taking life, not stealing, not engaging in false speech, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not taking intoxicants) plus practicing loving-kindness to all beings is far more life-changing than attending a retreat every once in a while.
Daily meditation especially vipassana and loving-kindness can truly change your life, bring inner peace and can truly in your personal and business relations.
As an entrepreneur, one side-effect of meditation is that it made me really examine what my definition of "success" and "happiness" is. In so doing meditation has taken away much of my ego and the desire to achieve revenue growth or market share goals. I simply don't care about that anymore and now I just want to operate a business that makes great products that people love while that producing enough revenue to support my team. For myself, building and maintaining an awesome and supportive work environment where individuals and life-work balance are valued are my top priorities. Happy lives and families are key. The gain of status and material objects are just transitory with no significance.
As a citizen of the United States (a country that cut down nearly all of its old-growth forests) what can I do as an individual to slow down deforestation in the Amazon? What are some real solutions I could enact that would make any difference?
The situation feels hopeless until the Brazilian government makes a sweeping effort to preserve the Amazon and that it's laws are fully enforced.
I worked at T-Mobile and did some work on this very subject our studies showed that people are so addicted that unless there is a threat of jail time or drivers license suspension people will not put down their phones.
My Grandfather was employee #3 at his company and over 35 years of hard work eventually became CEO and helped grow the company until it was listed on the NYSE. He preferred to hire people whom attended state schools and with B averages. Moreover, he thought private colleges and out of state schools were a huge waste of money (even as CEO and worth tens of millions lived in a modest 3 bedroom house and drove a 20 year old car).
He would repeatedly say to me: "I'd rather hire people whom got B's in school and had a social life than automatons who got A's." and "College is like driving cross-country. You can get there in a pinto or a Mercedes, what you see and learn along the way is up to you!"
I’m a founder of a specialty outdoor apparel manufacturer. After a brief stint of selling on Amazon we know only sell our gear via retail locations and our site. After achieving first page ranking for the category, we encountered massive problems including repeated page hijacking and low quality knock offs being sold as ours despite brand gating. I hope that discerning shoppers will model the behavior of the author and choose to make purchases of goods they know to be of high quality from manufacturer websites. This being said Amazon is great for product discovery and I hope we can build our brand effectively through legitimate reviews such as Backpacker, Ourdoor magazine, etc. Even though we’ve gone all in on social media our purchase rate from FB and Instagram is awful as our target buyer is wealthy fly fisherman over 50. Any tips on how to generate more online sales away from Amazon that older demographics utilize?
While this is fantastic news on one hand, it is concerning that cheap launches will lead to so much debris in low earth orbit that future generations will find it difficult to orbit without significant risk of micrometeorite strikes.
Chinese citizens have en masse been exploited by those in power for thousands of years. Moreover, workers and peasants weren't critical or even overwhelmingly supportive of the cultural revolution. Now China near the highest income inequality in the world and just like in the past those in power have technology in place to keep the average Chinese worker the ability to protest their working conditions. Hopefully, this will change but it is probably unlikely.
I'd really like to ask these VC's and corporate leaders "Are 12 hour work days 6 days a week where every movement of your workers are tracked something you'd like to see as a cultural norm?"
I think it is up to employees and entrepreneurs here in the US to push back against this march to longer and longer work days. Our physical and emotional health is far more important than a title or a few extra dollars. The well balanced life is a wealthy life.

As an entrepreneur I’ve never understood how closing a round of funding is somehow a badge of success. In fact it is quite the opposite. The ultimate businesses are those that are highly profitable and can scale using their own funding. Successful bootstrappers are the best entrepreneurs.
The cost of healthcare and need for health insurance prevent many people from becoming entrepreneurs. Case in point one of my best friends is a talented physiotherapist who has dreamed of starting his own clinic for years, however he has a chronic genetic health condition that keeps him reliant upon working for employers whom provide “good” health insurance. I think a nationalized health system would provide a boost to the startup economy.
My Mother started experiencing dementia at 57 and it has been difficult to see such a brilliant, adventurous worldly woman change. She is still the person whom she was but now she is a creature of habit and does the same thing and the same time everyday of the week. Leaving her neighborhood and visiting new places including restaurants and parks makes her uncomfortable. She used to love traveling to places like Kenya, Portugal and Indonesia but now she just wants to stay local. She was quite a sculptor too but gave that up to raise five children and now that all of us are out of the house she doesn’t have the capacity to peruse her old passion any longer. Moreover our conversations have progressively become shorter and shorter over the years and lost a lot of depth. As her son it’s very difficult to deal with. Moreover I’m in constant fear I will be afflicted too as my grandmother had Alzheimer’s as well. Maybe AI or some other tool will be utilized to develop medications and treatments to halt and reverse the disease in the future, fingers crossed.
My grandfather was CEO of an NYSE listed company and he preferred to hire people out of college whom had lower GPAs around 3.0 then perfect students because he thought these folks made for better team members and well rounded employees. Simply put he wanted to hire people who perused side passions and had a social life.
Personally after having been in entrepreneurial circles for years it seems the most financially successful people I know had mediocre college grades if they went at all. One friend who’s net worth is over $100m dropped out of high school to became a carpenter and is now a major real estate developer.Too many people spend way to much of thier youth focused on grades. What’s important is finding what you love, learning a bit and just doing enough to get your diploma. If you want to get a masters then focus on just getting in. It’s like passing the levels in a video game. No reading to get a perfect score if you don’t need to.
When you are 40 years old your college grades will likely have no bearing on your career prospects. Your social network will.
The discovery of microbial life on another world would be as significant as the Copernican revolution.
If indeed the methane signatures are not from serpentinization and we can somehow figure out how in situ to determine if the methane is indeed organically produced then the next question would be "Are these lifeforms the result of Panspermia"? We will then need to figure out how to sequence the chemistry of of these lifeforms which may require us to redefine the definition of "life" altogether. Regardless of the answer as to life independently forming given a certain set of criteria or if carried by meteorites from world to world such would provide good evidence that the universe is at probably teeming with microbial life will shifting eradicate our geocentric views even further.
Note: I have undergraduate degrees in both Geology and Astronomy. IMO Mars is likely a dead world and these methane signatures are from serpentinization as this is the most plausible scenario.
I've been lucky enough to travel to almost 40 countries and unfortunately many locations designated as a must visit have been completely ruined by over tourism including Boracay, Varcala, and Mue Ne just to name a few. Often times by the time the travel press is heralding a place it's character has been changed. Cartagena and Iceland are good examples of this where 10 years ago they were infrequently visited and were replete with services aimed at locals, now many of the shops and restaurants cater to serve the needs of tourists. Good for the proprietors but bad for the authenticity of local culture.
I see this as a good thing. Hopefully by helping other countries implement plans that engender educational and employment opportunities for women we can finally hit “peak child” and begin to slowly shrink our global population over time.
After having worked at large companies and startups including founding a few of my own it is clear that job and financial security is about equal between the two. The last Fortune 100 company I worked for would cull thier workforce including whole teams often regardless of individual performance every March. If you had just happened to work on the wrong team for the wrong director too bad for you. All to often I saw dedicated people who had sacrificed years and long hours just get laid off seemingly out of nowhere. Directors seemed to have the worst longevity as when a VP was let go they often got rid of his or her management team as well.
The days of company loyalty are long gone. If you work at a large company and have been there over a year keep actively looking for the an even better position. You are expendable and therefore owe your employer nothing more than what you are paid to do today. I hate being so negative but sadly this seems to be the state of affairs these days
I’ve been considering taking these supplements but I’m concerned about increased risk of cancer. Have there been updates on this since the publication of this study? https://siteman.wustl.edu/pathway-linked-slower-aging-also-f...
My missions are as follows:
- Work: Create profitable businesses that enable my teams to have healthy life-work balance with 35 hour work weeks and 6 weeks vacation so that they have time for family, adventure, positive mental health and time to perhaps start their own businesses.
- Life: Be a great father, husband and to travel to over 100 countries. Do things that make the word a better place.
How can workers change corporate culture from within to demand work-life balance? I asked an executive VP this at a one of the worlds largest company’s here in Seattle and she said “If the young talent we need coming out of school across the board demanded shorter days and more vacation we would have to comply. But they don’t instead they are awed by an extra $10k on a hiring bonus they might or might not get after two years and they’ll work 60 hour weeks because that’s what they think ‘normal’ is because their peers are doing it.”
So how from the ground up can we make corporate culture in America more focused on the social health of their employees?
I wonder if Amazon, Facebook and Google are using similar performance management tactics to drive the attrition of older workers?
“A slide from a similar presentation prepared last spring for the same leaders called for “re-profiling current talent” to “create room for new talent.” Presentations for 2015 and 2016 for the 50,000-employee software group also included plans for “aggressive performance management” and emphasized the need to “maintain steady attrition to offset hiring.””
Let’s take the extreme example where a bug in a self driving semi truck leads to it mowing down 50 people on a busy sidewalk. How are the victims to get justice? In almost all incidents besides a human truck driver having a major health incident, that driver would go to jail but it seems that there will be little repercussions beyond fines for autonomous driving companies. I think once a mass fatality occurs people will scream for autonomous driving execs and programmers to be held liable.
It seems the settlement of a $500k for Holmes was rather weak justice and sends the wrong message. With the kind of fraud she perpetuated to investors jail time would be more appropriate.
Even with this revision the hourly wage is well below the $15.00 minimum wage here in Seattle. I wonder if after expenses Instacart and Amazon delivery drivers make any more than the typical Uber driver? I think contractors across all income levels need better protections. Laws should be enacted to guarantee after vehicle expenses that if one drives an Uber for an hour one makes at least a minimum wage.
I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and given medication which made me feel numb and completely changed my personality. After a year or so my father decided to stop giving me the medication and I returned to normal which must’ve been hell for my teachers.
Besides science classes, I received Ds in every class through my sophomore year. At the time I looked like a failure but today Id consider myself happy and successful as I’ve travelled the world, become a father and started a number of innovative businesses.
ADD is a gift as it has enabled me to make creative connections that others simply don’t see.
If you have kids please focus on their long-term well being. Please love your kids and support the things they find interest in. Getting good grades being well behaved in class aren’t everything are not necessarily an indicator of future success.
So how does this compare to the techniques used by Energous to charge devices at a distance?
