Awesome what you're doing here with the video and the transcript. But can we make the transcript not include the pauses? It really throws me off the flow of the takeways when you put all the 'Ums' and 'Ahh's there in the transcript. It doesn't add at all to the message when reading it...

I've had quite a lot of luck developing HTML/JS apps in Sencha Touch (very basic CRUD apps of course). Really noticed a speed improvement running the latest release on an iPhone 5S. Not sure how much room there really is for HTML/JS ports at this stage. Titanum was a let down for me. Am keen to try Xamarin next. Or just go native? Thoughts?...

Is it just me or does this feel too soon to really give two hoots about? 30 years is within my lifetime, just kinda feels like Mom pulling out old baby clothes and saying 'look at your old onesie!' Wow, looks a bit different to my own babies onesie which is still just as utilised today, but it's by no means a relic. Having said that we still get interested in 30000 year old excavated skulls (which most of us have and still use today). I guess it's the time / evolution factor. I'm just not that interested in this find. Seems more apt for HN readers in 3014.

I used to work in IT recruitment, and had CV's coming at me every day. One particular candidate popped up in my database search who possessed the rare skill that I was looking for. Her last CV in our system was 3 years old. Anyway, I called her up and asked if she might be still in that field. It turns out the call was made in likely timing. She had just been divorced and explained that she was looking to get back into the workforce after being a homemaker for the past 3 years. I added a note to the call log for other recruiters who may see her record saying "Great candidate, gap in work history due to marriage. Now divorced and wanting to get back get back into the industry. Definitely worth interviewing!".

Now lets imagine that the agency I worked for was sold/aquired at some point and eventually resulted in a mailout being performed on the database.

You can imagine the result if the comment field was accidentally included in the mail-merge, or some substring of it;

"Dear Great candidate, gap in work history due to marriage. Now divorced and wanting to get back get back into the industry, have you considered funeral insurance?"

I didn't watch the video to see Jobs saying this, just reading from the parent transcript, but can we be sure Jobs was actually referring to Dropbox here? And not the default shared folder that ships with OS X called 'Dropbox'? (Which many people had automated to back up dropped files to a remote server in the past).

This, mate. I'm in the same boat. I didn't realise until last night that we're really a different crowd. I was talking about earnings with my 23yo gf and mentioned that of all my working life, I could finally say that I've earned a million dollars. Then when breaking it down I realised that I'd done over 80% of that in the last ~2 years - since founding a startup software company. Howsat!

Hmmm, I enjoyed this article. Maybe its because it validated potential failure by being able to blame it on not coming from the 'right' background or having the opportunities the article uses as an argument for his success. Upon reflection it's a bit depressing too. After reading Steve Jobs biography the one ingredient in common between both entrepreneurs I seem to lack is that inherent harshness to call a spade a spade and not care about offending people in the process. I can't help but default to finding praise in mediocrity rather than coming down as a tyrant on anything less than perfect. Which behaviour is more outlierish, and is that a trait of the most successful in reality?

This is an ironic piece to be discussed on HN, especially for the commenters who express any disagreement with the TSA policy referenced in this article.

As someone who has been down-voted quite harshly for making offhanded humorous comments on a few threads, it seems it would be hypocritical if the TSA's stance in this article was not lauded with praise by the HN community at large.

In an airport situation, joking about any matters of security is seen as undesirable and quite intentionally punishable.

From my experience over a few accounts on this website, the same philosophy holds right here on HN - Make a joke or humorous response to any story (whether it be a super-serious matter of international security or light-hearted comparison between Ikea furniture and death metal bands) and you'll be punished duly by the community at large by means of trouncing your reputation here into the ground for your attempts at humour.

So here's where I'd like to pose the question - Why the massive hypocritical disconnect HN? Just because PG referenced it in an essay of on-topic commenting etiquette? I find we discuss important issues on this site with a certain amount of passion and opposition when it comes to anything threatening censorship and freedom, and very quickly turn around and (blindly) adhere to the same policies when they're suggested as the right way to moderate each other in our own online community.

I've been downvoted a few times recently for attempting to make a few jokes of my own this board and it annoys me that we're all encouraged to punish that, the same way the TSA is.

I realise I'll probably lose my account over this comment. But as parting words I'd like to say:

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I had a feeling I might be paying too much. As since I hired my contractor he's suddenly been able to afford to set up and office and hire other developers that are charged at the same rate. Don't get me wrong, he's a really skilled developer and puts my JS skills to shame. But I'm feeling like the price per project seems to be creeping up exponentially. I'll try giving some smaller jobs to other devs in Bangladesh & India to see what the quality of work is like in comparison. Cheers.

Are these monthly salaries quite typical across the board for the majority of people in Bangladesh? I employ a JS developer in Dhaka as a contractor who's hourly rate is $22.00 USD. I would have crossed his palm with about $4000 in the past month alone. Yet he still tells me he's only on the slightly higher side of 'average' when it comes to lifestyle/income over there. Earning 90% of a sweat shop workers monthly salary per hour kinda makes me second guess this. Anyone here have any direct experience of what the cost of living in Bangladesh really is?
