Screwed by Square 12 years ago

Even if it is, Alex had an awful experience and feels like a victim. If Square can't do anything about the outcome, they can at least offer a better explanation and tips going forward. Communication seemed to be the biggest issue here.

And when do we finally decide that those principles are worth fighting for? When do we decide that "absolutely nothing you can do" is unacceptable?

My parents still use a microwave they bought before I was born (I'm 28), and it does exactly this, except without the power dial. It's one analog dial for time -- turn it to start, turn it back to zero to stop. I miss having it around.

Also, just as a general user experience thing, not having labels can be detrimental if the field's purpose is forgotten or unknown. Having a placeholder is fine if there is no value in the field, but if I submit a long form after filling it out, only to be shown an error, what if I don't remember what that particular field was for?

I'm with you - the perceived values of websites/businesses like this are astounding. Somehow founders and VCs walk away with a bunch of money after acquisitions, but what's Yahoo going to do? Seems like a large sum for an acqui-hire.

Then again I'm a giant noob when it comes to startups, funding and acquisitions. Regardless, the numbers are out of this world.

I'm 28. My focus sucks overall, but a recent improvement I've made is the type of music / noise I have while working. I switched from music I really enjoy and tend to sing/hum with, to electronic music with little to no vocals and upbeat tempos. My mind focuses less on the words and music, and allows me to think more about what I'm doing.

I've also tried some white noise creators, like this one for coffee shop sounds: http://coffitivity.com/ Personally the techno music works better, but you may be different.

Seems the 7 minutes was taken pretty literally in this app. The article suggests doing each exercise for 30 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest, for a total of 7:50. I was confused by each exercise started at :26 and rest at :8.

Would definitely be interested in downloading and tweaking this for my own. Github, perhaps?

Edit: FYI, don't release production code with console.log() if you can help it. :-p

I'm grateful for the Tower GUI app. Just wish it would tell me what commands it was using, since I'd like to know.

Business in a Box 13 years ago

One word: convenience. People will pay to have them give them everything they need up front, instead of researching or finding it themselves.

Chrome. I don't bookmark a ton of stuff, just things that might be difficult to find again in the future. Otherwise a minute on Google will usually help me find whatever. I used to be a fan of Delicious but the browser extensions and stuff never worked in a manner I was fond of.

Pretty sure I'll end up building my own mini-app eventually for quickly archiving links, so I tailor it however I want.

I had a similar thought when reading the article and these comments. I've been a member of Quora for a long time, and I can't remember the last time I had to log in again in my desktop browser. Any time I've navigated to a Quora page, I've seen all the answers no problem. So a lot of these complaints are news to me.

I completely agree with the mobile blocking through Safari & others, though, especially if the whole page is being downloaded.

Might want to emphasize your lib's dependence on jQuery, especially since your article says it can be installed in "just one line", the opposite of what the Github README shows.

Twitter Site Issue 14 years ago

Could they be more vague?

Related: Not sure why HN needs this; if you know Twitter is having issues, all this does is confirm it. No additional information or relevancy, except maybe an updated "This issue has been resolved." message.
