If an experiment goes wildly successful beyond imagination, rapid pivot is only natural.
Jarred earned the trust by providing value. People who say trust is reduced without actually seeing the result, never had trust to begin with.
It's not like they merged and dumped it on to the world immediately. It's available as canary. They are doing their own dog fooding. Prisma is using the canary successfully.
As long as oven team can deliver a zig version equivalent stable bun, it is a success in my book. After that they can focus on resolving as many unsafe as possible and then the real benefits will materialize.
Bun "contributor community", that provides significant amount of code contribution, is largely non-existent. Almost all of the work is done by Jarred and others at Oven. If someone still wants to contribute, they can do so on Rust. There is no reason to give warnings and plenty of time just to delay something like this when doing it rapidly is possible (now with AI).
Bun "user community", is not affected by this at all (yet) except the ai doomers/zig fanatics.
When v1.4.0 is fully released, and if Bun team can't get it to full feature (and no new serious bugs) parity with last zig version within a few versions (let's say v1.4.2), then there will be real effects.
I will be testing v140 after release. As a bun user community member, I expect no new type of crash, slightly faster perf/less memory usage and move on with my life.
A rewrite like this is unprecedented but doesn't mean impossible. I am cautiously optimistic.
Is there any precedent of rewriting a software, let alone in another language, retaining copyright by past contributors?
And this contribute to oss voluntarily but hold copyright and use it as some sort of leverage is bullshit, in my opinion. Don't contribute to someone else's project if your concern is copyright.
Then that should be fixed instead of vandalizing.
And let's be honest, that's not why "some" people are against them.
Discussion was not interesting. It was built on speculation as facts and lies as facts.
The worst is "hey they are running proprietary fork and not open source anymore" when the code is available in plain sight. Canary build is available with one command. The stupid article made a huge stink about it without this key fact. Now they added the update but damage is done.
Bun is just the js runtime tool. At worst, you'll get a crash. If you are worried about bun security while granting permissions to Claude code...your worries are placed in the wrong place.
Some amount of surveillance leads to a better society. See SG. Flock is needed for current USA. That's why idiots are up against it.
Thats why. You don't have to go thru this extra check if you use EU passport or if you have temporary/permanent residency (but not travel visa) attached to your passport.
They can ship with whatever they want as long as it works.
Then why do you care? If target users (developers) face issues with bun, they will stop using it. Go back to Node or switch to Deno.
Bun has bugs? yes. Do they affect vast majority of users? Not really. Been using bun for about 3 years; never had an issue with it.
these doom and gloom reports also said half the land will be under water by now and average temperature will be 40c. Didn't happen.
Earth is in a cooler period and it will get very warm. These crappy climate change activists will not get anything done but to hold us back. We need more power, more tech, and more abundance of things. We will need to engineer our way out of real climate change.
So when they spend money to rent town area for marriage, it is a problem. When they spend money to actually do some work to make the world a better place, it is also a problem. The only good thing is donate money like bezos ex-wife and fuel the activists. Eff socialism.
It is about having control of the company directions and not be beholden to stupid board members or hostile take overs.
A lot of people spent a LOT more money in every election for many candidates. Esp the democrats going over billions in 2020 (3B or something). Did you cry about electing Biden with 3B?
And if he spent only 300M and was able to elect president with it, more power to him. He must know something about efficiency as others spending so much more couldn't do it. Ridiculous points. I can bring them up too.
That's like saying let's stay with horses.
We'll develop faster and better tech. We'll find resources to feed that. Use that to build better. Access better resources. We'll mine asteroids. We'll harness much more from the sun. The factory must grow.
A lot of hypotheticals, conjecture, speculation, personal feels devoid of any facts. That somehow kills the project. ok!
None of that is needed. Nobody benefits from all that time wasting bureaucracy/corpo speak. Bun is quick to deliver new features and bug fixes. With this change, the hope is that'll only get faster.
All those PRs can be fed thru Claude and converted to rust and then manual polish can be added.
And GP is full of shit as the main branch is the v1.4.0. it is not "released" yet as it is not finished. It is available as canary version.
Bun became a thing because it provided some specific benefit to js ecosystem. Zig enabled the rapid development. The people who contributed were definitely helpful but they can still choose to help or not and new people will step up too
That's just like your opinion...? More power to Jared (and anyone else) if they can "vibe code" useful projects like bun.
What a load of bs.
Inevitable collapse
According to who? You? The well ackshually guy?
Low in trust before acquisition

Unreleased version
v140 is the canary version which has been available for a long time.

Not open source anymore
Who died and made you the dictator of open source?
Your post is just a bunch of opinions and lies and speculation wrapped as facts.
Update firmware.

Enjoy.
That's what I have been doing for years.
So the whole world needs to pay (spend more) to accommodate to your problem? What next? You don't have legs so everyone around you must carry you?
Look, the goal is not to make things accessible. The goal is, out of generosity of the society (and I fully support it), to allow disabled people to access the services. Before recent times, it was only meaningfully possible thru building accessible friendly websites/apps.
This has always been a hit and miss. Usually only the super big companies did it right (see Google apple Ms) or people using big company's framework with some carefulness. But for the most, it didn't work out. That's why so much complaint against websites being inaccessible.
Now we have a better way. Use a local AI to consume or interact with the content. This will empower the disabled far more than they currently are. Apple will probably lead the way here.
A. Any decent ones are more than good enough to provide content in an accessible way.
B. Like you accept the risk of running scripts? Or getting zero day thru your browser? Ridiculous. Sandbox it.
C. Local LLM is enough. Nothing needs to go to a server.
has it occurred to you some (from the amount of demand, a lot) people actually want to buy it because of that?
What is he doing with all that wealth? Taking lavish vacations? Buying luxurious yacht? Buying islands and making bunkers?
Excellent response. I said it before, forcing the responsibility of making thing accessible on the world makes no sense now (made sense before though). Just use an AI to interact with the app/website; it can provide whatever sort of accessibility you need. It should be built as a chrome extension or even native...
Why not all factories? And hospitals? Schools? Offices?
So where were you in last 20 years asking for tax on DCs?
