If your password is long enough it doesn’t matter if they know it is say 16 characters and if it isn’t long enough it also doesn’t matter because they can just brute force all the potential lengths up to it. So yes it is just security theater.

It is also the only SSO flow I have ever seen that fundamentally cannot work if you have more than one account remembered on your device. So far the only way I’ve found to get it to let you log out of account A and then log into account B is to clear all cookies otherwise it gives you permission denied errors. Have no idea how it can be this horrible

It actually isn't a fork of Scratch3 but was started way back in Scratch1.4 as a JS implementation using Morphic which was inspired by Squeak. It is really good software and IMO is better than Scratch since it provides the tools to scale up from the toy programs Scratch is optimized for.

If they are confidential they probably shouldn’t be uploaded to any website no matter if it calls out to OpenAI or does all the processing on their own servers.

Not to excuse Google but I think their main problem is that Qualcomm stops providing support for their chips pretty quickly which makes it much harder to run newer versions of Android that have newer kernels. Apple controls not just the OS but the chips as well so they don’t have to work around that problem.

This isn’t even close to accurate. For one thing, developers already pay to license the Unity engine, it’s only free if you agree to keep the unity logo loading screen and make under a certain amount of money.

Two, unlike the Reddit API changes which just annoyed mods at worst (yes there were problems for people with disabilities but that is such a small percentage it was basically a rounding error for them) this is an existential threat to F2P mobile games which are Unity’s largest market by far. When you aren’t directly selling the game and the only way to make money is to get as many downloads as possible in the hope that a certain small percentage buy IAPs these few cent fees per install could very easily wipe out their entire revenue.

Three, unlike Reddit which had no viable alternatives for the millions of end users to migrate to, Unity has far fewer customers and an extremely viable replacement in the form of Unreal and potentially Godot.

Very sad to hear that they had to shut down but I am also not particularly surprised. The Shadow Tactics games were well made but also extremely niche. The lack of micro transactions made for a better game but also meant that there wasn’t much recurring income and they had to work while under the stress of knowing that if they make one bad game the entire studio would go bankrupt.

Best of luck to everyone at the studio, hopefully the bonus they are giving out is sizable enough that the workers won’t have to stress out about finding a new job too quickly, especially since this seems to be a pretty sudden announcement.

If by virtue signal you mean call out creeps and perverts then yes. The world would be a much better place if people did that more often instead of just leaving them be to hurt women and teenage girls. Maybe then they would at least not act on it in public.

It is fiction yes, but if it is lifelike enough does the difference matter? Even without the ick factor of making porn of someone without their consent, it would be so easy to destroy someone's career or relationship by making these deepfakes and then spreading them around. Especially once the tech gets more life-like and loses the current AI gen tells.

And the same would apply to doing this the old fashioned way in Photoshop, however you have to admit that taking it from "need special software and experience in using that software" to "just upload their image to a website and get back their AI generated nudes" is a huge change in how accessible this is.

The most powerful image deepfake AI ever created. See any girl clothless with the click of a button.

This is just disgusting. I thought it would just be a uncensored generative AI but certainly wasn't expecting peeping-tom as a service. And advertise it so blatantly as being able to virtually strip any girl you have pictures of just makes me sick.

It only works because on modern consoles the RAM is soldered directly on the board and so the data doesn’t have to travel across PCIe lanes. Doing this on a normal PC would have horrific performance. ARM Macs do have this architecture but you pay for it with not being able to replace any individual components for upgrades or even repairs.

The mobile gaming landscape is not a place for quality

I’d rephrase that as the mobile gaming landscape is not a place for traditional monetization models. Genshin Impact is primarily a mobile game and although the anime aesthetic may not be for everyone it is easily a AAA quality open world game that has been a resounding financial success, making over $3.6B in just two years. However, it uses the gacha monetization model to fund its live service development instead of the traditional “buy the main game once and then pay for any expansions you want” model.

Rated T for Teenagers and Rated E for Everyone straight up do not have swearing, period

This is absolutely wrong. According to the ESRB website, T for Teen allows the infrequent use of strong language. This is a far cry from no swearing allowed at all.

Furthermore, the PG-13 rating for movies allows one use of the F-word per movie and more liberal use of less strong swears. So neither games or movies get rated 18+ only for swearing

Summoning Salt does not include any memes in their videos. The footage that included the profanities was of a speedrunner celebrating that they had just broken the world record. This sort of footage is important for his documentaries because their whole purpose is in showing who were the key participants in the speedrunning communities for the game the video is about. You can’t do that nearly as well if you don’t actually show the speedruns.

This isn’t an AirPods specific issue, it’s a Windows issue. My laptop does the same thing with my galaxy buds where it shows two devices when I connect them. One of them uses the Bluetooth profile for headphones which sounds decent and the other uses the profile for headsets which sounds like garbage but that is needed in order to have the bandwidth to use the built in mic.

If you want some games that really revolutionize what games can be, check out Celeste, Secret Little Haven, Baba Is You, and Glittermitten Grove. All of these games really challenge what games can be and experiment with radically different kinds of art.

I haven’t played most of these games but I have played a lot of Celeste and I don’t really see how it challenges what games can be or experiments with radically different kinds of art. Don’t get me wrong, it is an absolutely amazing game and one of the best platformers of all time with a sweet, well written story but at the end of the day it’s a 2D platformer. Yes the controls and art are much better than most but there is nothing in the gameplay fundamentally different than what the original Super Mario Bros had on the NES.

I’m also not really a fan of the snobbish tone of the article. Horizon Zero Dawn is certainly not revolutionary in terms of game design but nobody claimed it was. Genres exist for a reason and just because a game (or TV show, or movie, etc) conforms to the expectations of the genre doesn’t make it bad. Also as a side note, I really resent them calling Aloy a “waifu” since Horizon is one of the few games with a female protagonist that is both undeniably a woman while also not being made as a sex object. Metroid is famous for being one of the first games with a female protagonist but for the entire game Samus might as well be a guy, non-binary, or a robot since all you see is her armor. You only find out she is a woman after beating the game and discovering that based on how much of the game you completed the more clothes you can strip off of her until she is left just wearing her underwear. Tomb Raider on the other hand had an obviously female protagonist but one that was intended as a sex object for guys to ogle with her large breasts, skimpy clothes, and near complete lack of personality. Meanwhile Horizon presents Aloy as a strong protagonist who doesn’t need men to save her at every turn while also not being sexualized to such extremes that you feel like the real reason she exists is so that men have someone to ogle at while playing the game. The fact that Horizon (and The Last of Us series which presents its female protagonists similarly) get such extreme hatred from capital G Gamers because “they made them look like men!” should be evidence enough that this is revolutionary in its own way in the industry.

Originally Scratch was a Smalltalk program and then in 2.0 it switched to Flash/Actionscript. So it has never really been "native". Although I'm not a big fan of Electron it does fit what the Scratch project needs perfectly as they need to be able to run Scratch in a web browser to reach more kids and schools. In this day and age HTML5/JS/CSS is the only way to do that. The fact that Electron lets them offer an offline editor is just a nice bonus.

As someone who is currently taking a math class, the point of taking notes isn’t to have a record of what was taught. Rather taking notes helps me concentrate on the lecture instead of having my mind wander and for whatever reason hand writing the notes helps the concepts sink into my memory better than just listening to the lecture and reviewing the handouts. A lot of times I’ll take notes and then throw them out in a few days because the handouts and textbook are better for actually reviewing the topics later and the notes have already served their purpose of helping me learn from the lectures.

While this is true they also give you a character of every element (anemo, pyro, cyro, hydro, electro, and geo) for free so you aren’t actually locked out of any of the content or puzzles. In fact there is a famous Genshin YouTuber bwaap who has completed the game using only the 4 starter characters to prove that you can. It’s not the easiest task but it also isn’t super hard, especially since some of the free units they give you are comparable to the top tier 5 stars you can wish for. In fact one of the strongest teams in the game is made up of only 4 stars which are really easy to get since the rate for them is much higher than 5 stars.

Genshin (and many other gacha) are actually more like the second option since they feature a mechanic known as pity where after a certain number of pulls the chance to get the item goes up to 100%. In Genshin that is at 180 pulls but because they also ramp up the chance to a featured item as you pull more realistically it is more likely to happen at around 150-160 pulls. This is still crazy (especially if you buy all of these pulls with money because the dollar to pull exchange rate is absolutely ludicrous) but it does mean that an F2P player can guarantee that they will get a character they want after a couple of months of saving.

Oh yeah, the prices to buy premium currency are absolutely outrageous and I won’t even try to disagree with that. However, that really only matters if you want to collect every single character and/or get multiple copies of characters for their constellation buffs. The game is pretty generous with premium currency with most patches (the game releases updates on a 6 week schedule) giving enough currency for around 45-50 pulls. You can also pay $5 for the monthly subscription that gives you enough currency for 18.75 more pulls over 30 days. This is really the only way of buying extra premium currency that isn’t outrageously overpriced. My main point was that you don’t have to buy extra premium currency to have fun with the game or beat it.

Since this video is 1h 41m long and many people here on HN probably don’t know much about Genshin I’ll try and provide a brief summary of the game. Genshin is an open world game in the style of Zelda BotW in which you play as an otherworldly traveler who was separated from their twin sibling by an unknown god when they arrived in the world of Teyvat. The sibling you picked then is kept asleep for 500 years until you wake up and begin your journey to find your sibling. This journey takes you across the world of Teyvat as you save people from dragons, Abyss monsters, and other threats. Gameplay wise you play with a team of four characters each with their own elemental skills and abilities. To beat the enemy mobs and bosses you have to combine these different elements to create reactions to amplify your damage. There are also a massive amount of open world puzzles to solve as you explore the world of Teyvat.

The main problem people have with Genshin is that it is a gacha game so you gamble with premium currency to get new units and weapons. Although I do understand why people are extremely against this, in practice it isn’t that big of a problem in Genshin because of the pity system that guarantees that you will get the 5* unit you want after 180 pulls but will normally happen after 150-160 pulls because of the soft pity system that greatly increases your chance of getting a 5* after 74 pulls (the hard guarantee is at 90 pulls). You are also guaranteed a 4* character or weapon after every 10 pulls and these are also very strong compared to the 5* units. You can easily beat the game with only 4* units, and in fact one of the strongest team compositions in the game is made entirely of 4* units. So any claims about the game being P2W aren’t really accurate since there is no PvP content and the PvE content in the game is beatable by 4* units which are obtainable without spending money or a bunch of time grinding.

So overall, I really enjoy Genshin and would recommend other people try it as well. It does have problems but they aren’t as extreme as people make them out to be.

imagine you’re an Apple exec who gets to see earning charts, iPhone, iPad and MacOS. One of these things is not like the others in both usage numbers and profit.

You are correct, one of those is not like the others, but it isn’t the Macs. According to their latest earnings report, iPhones made Apple $39.57B, iPads $7.37B, and Macs $8.24B [0]. I wouldn’t be surprised if iPadOS and MacOS merged in the near future, especially since they are running on the same chips, but it won’t be because iPads are the ones making all the money.

Windows actually has screen recording software built in now with the XBox Game Bar. It’s meant for recording games but there isn’t any reason that you can’t use it for other programs.

The rocket was supposed to be able to blow up like this, that’s why the flight termination system is installed. Also SpaceX has to get certified for launching from Boca Chica which means that all the government agencies that could get involved have already given their permission for this sort of event occurring.
