Exactly the position I am in now. After a couple of years I am looking to move on but I am finding that no one needs the experience I have. Everything I have done for my current company is desktop development and the vast majority of the nearby jobs are web development. Companies these days don't want to hire anyone who can't hit the ground running so it's a rough situation. Better to get out now than many years from now though.

yes! I have been playing a lot of king arthurs gold as well but the community is very small. There are usually only at most 2 servers with a decent number of players.

Take this with a grain of salt, it really depends on where you live. I live in the Ohio area and of everyone I went to college with and everyone I have ever worked with I have never met someone that has worked more than 45 hours a week.

I work with a guy that used to be a submariner and he talks about how the best thing about being in a submarine was the food, including lobster. Maybe being in submarine they couldn't spend too long cooking it? As someone who just tried lobster for the first time this weekend I don't think anything can make it taste good.

It's probably the fact that a huge leap in battery technology would make huge changes in both electric cars as well as being able to store solar power (and therefore allowing people to live off the grid). Faster computer hardware wouldn't have nearly the effect and I'm sure these companies want the biggest hype possible.

I googled something like "Paul Software Engineer" to see if I myself would come up and found Paul Graham's articles which lead to hacker news. I had no idea what a startup even was but found the content to be of such a higher quality than anywhere else that I visited often.

I wish, most people don't seem to care. I for one would rather see my tax dollars go to something useful like education.

As someone with the name Paul Brown in the Cincinnati area (where the Paul Brown stadium is) I deal with this almost daily. I'm sick of meeting someone and about 75% of the time they go "oh, do you own the stadium?". I'm seriously starting to think about moving far away so I don't have to hear it anymore. I don't even like football!

I also went to high school with a guy named John Conner and everyone use to thank him for some day saving the human race from the machines.

I just found out that my uncle, whom I thought very successful, failed to fulfill his responsibilities to his backers. He was working on a 3d printer that I was hoping to get to buy some day, but he never delivered more than a few of them (most of which didn't even work) and now his backers are trying to get together to sue him. A few days ago he filed for bankruptcy so they probably won't get anything.

As much as I love the idea of kickstarter, I have now seen first hand how you can be cheated and just can't trust the system to work (although many have and it has worked for them). After the disappointment of Minecraft when Notch started making a ton of money I have simply stayed away from all crowd sourcing/buy-and-play-during-alpha projects for good. There is nothing wrong with simply waiting until something is finished to buy it.

The only account I have so far used my real name on is my stackexchange account so I can potentially use it in interviews to show I am active in the community and in my own learning.

Ego is my number one pet peeve about coworkers and I have a really hard time working with anyone who won't admit they don't know everything. I have a coworker who I can't tell that I got an answer from stackoverflow because he will instantly say "I don't care what reputation he has blah blah blah he is wrong" and won't listen to any actual research on the topic.

No... I'm saying that while we on the HN community like to believe that everyone makes honest effort to do great things with their careers most people work to make a living, and if given the option of not having to work and still make a living that they would choose not to work. I myself might consider from time to time not working if I could do so with a decent livable income and I think the majority of people would be OK with the basics if it meant they had all of their time to themselves.

This. I am an engineer and work hard because I enjoy the feeling of success as well as the wealth, but for many people (I believe most) this is not the case. On both sides of my family most heavily use government aid when they can and don't care about being successful but simply about getting by. My brother is obsessed with WoW and doesn't care about his future and my mother is perfectly content to just watch TV all day every day while my dad takes care of them both. Enjoying hard work is something you learn and is a feeling that the HN community seems to believe everyone has when really we are in the minority.

Exactly. I could never bring myself to use billions on super luxury stuff anyway and would wind up donating most of that money to a good cause (I wonder if the Gates foundation accepts donations?).

This is why I simply will never inherit my parents estate when they die, I don't want to risk inheriting their debts no matter what I'm told. My mother inherited her fathers estate with all of her brothers and sisters only to find out that because Grandpa had a huge expensive operation that the estate actually owed money. Luckily she was able to somehow get her name off of the inheritance after the fact.

I basically did the same thing except my volley out of stealth went for the weapons instead of shields since I wanted to make sure it couldn't hurt me after my cloak wears off. Perhaps I should start running from less than optimal fights, usually I stick out every fight because I want all the scrap.

How did you get that far with the stealth cruiser? I love playing the ship but I never survive past sector 3. I have logged hundreds of hours on FTL and never once beaten it with my favorite ships :(

I personally always put 100% into the charities, so I certainly won't be using the store at all. If they continue to do bundles I'll stick with that, but this makes it clear why the store came about.

This. USPS for me has also been terrible about updating their tracking information, so I don't find out until late at night when expecting a package to find I need to make this trip. It is like they wait until the end of the day to update every package status.

As I have said in other threads, just because someone else in another part of the world has a worse life than you does not mean yours is OK. If person A gets beaten 3 times a day and person B only gets beaten 1 times a day, does person B not have the right to say they deserve better? Person A might be in a worse position, but perhaps both people deserve a better life.

Deserves? Why does anyone deserve anything? Nature itself does not act that way.

Living as we would in nature would be a HORRIBLE way to live human life. The way things "naturally" would occur is irrelevant, we build societies and develop science to improve our lives to where we all want them to be.

What he means is, Gates time is so much more valuable to him than his money is to him, where most people time or money might be more valuable than the other, but not to such an extreme. My time is more valuable to me, but there is only so much money I'm willing to spend on convenience. Gates however would probably be willing to spend thousands of dollars on convenience that would seem like huge waste to the rest of us.

He makes the point that despite his time being so much more valuable to him that he is still willing to spend his time doing good things instead of just having a stress free easy life.
