Lots of people on this thread say that clones are inevitable and profitable. That might be true, but at least for me, it would be a sad way to spend my time. I'd hate to tell my kids that I used my best years copying other peoples' products instead of trying to create new ones.

One of the most valuable parts of an online identity is the attention you receive from other people. Social networks make getting attention more efficient. In this way, proprietary tools do a lot to enrich your online identity.

For me, this is a great tradeoff. For example, I'm happy to put my pictures on Facebook because my family and friends see those pictures and leave comments that I enjoy. In comparison, my local copies feel like those dusty old photo albums in my parents' basement that nobody ever opens.

Got it. On security, you might try and test to see whether the added security you offer is meaningful to your audience. The security offered by web services is already sufficient for me to share my most personal emails and financial information.

There is a relevant difference between valuations derived from secondary markets and public markets. Investors in secondary markets rarely have clear understanding of real financials or the capital structure of the company. Anyone up for sharing their Twilio projects? I've always been interested in the platform, but I've seen relatively few applications built on it.

I don't think founders should take giant salaries. At the same time, if you have funding, I think you should pay yourself enough to be comfortable.

People do short-sighted things when they are desperate. I think super low salaries increase the risk of burning out, giving up, or taking a more attractive offer. I think quitting for one reason or another is the biggest risk to a startup's success.

I think this site will succeed or fail based on the quality of the food images. I would recommend you look at how opensourcefood.com cultivated high quality images from their community. If a low standard is set, I don't think there will be much you can do to make the site valuable.

Can you clarify? I've always thought of engineers as people who solve problems by applying scientific knowledge. These guys seem to fit the bill, but I'm not an engineer (by any definition) so I don't know the terms first-hand.

Some of those commenters look pretty well-qualified. For example, Terence Tao was awarded both the Fields medal and the MacArthur Fellowship.

I disagree. Sure, Twitter needs to improve stability and speed. But I think the location and annotations are exciting and it makes sense for them to learn what works and adds value to the core experience.

Most of what Trip talks about is FB connect and recasting. I like the flash to html switch, but can someone explain why the flash to html5 conversion would increase time on the site for regular web users?

(I find it easier to understand why people who discover scribd through FB would spend a lot more time on site than someone who reached scribd via search)

I think your objection is less about the type of person and more about the use case. Representative maps are best for showing relationships and directions. That's why public transportation maps (subways esp.) are drawn to show how various lines intersect vs. what lat/long coordinate you enter and exit. For your use case, a geographically accurate map may be better.

I agree with mmelin. Maybe it could be more fun if it was a petition you 'sign' by re-tweeting, or a 'meeting manifesto'. Or at least something more provocative like, I won't tolerate poorly run meetings or the people who perpetrate them because they are soul sucking and are wasting my life away.

Might be over-analysis. Perhaps google just heard that people like pictures on the bing page, so they tried to push it on google for a day, both to see what happens and increase igoogle. i was surprised how fired up people got.
