I've done many hallucinogens and have seen great things but "unspeakable horrors" too. It was a legitimately terrifying experience but I came out of it feeling mentally strong and stable.

I can't recommend anyone to try it since not everyone may be able to handle it. But it was an amazing experience I don't regret at all.

Surgery is just a bandaid on a systemic problem. We still don't even know why we are obese! Certain groups say carbs are the devil (what about Japan, China who eat a lot of rice and keep their obesity rates very low?). Other groups say it's saturated fats (what about the thousands of years history we have of eating fats? Obesity is a very recent problem).

You will probably get fatter living in a suburb driving everywhere rather than say NYC. But that's not enough to explain the difference between countries.

What about pollutants? The food, the water, the air, the feed for animals, the antibiotics, pesticides, seed oils, microplastics?

I get why you ask but it really doesn't matter, when you burn out you have no choice but to quit. The money determines how long you can relax before getting your next job.

Burnout 3 years ago

I burned out last year, luckily I had the funds to quit without anything lined up and been semi-retired ever since. I'd like to work again but modern software jobs ask for too much. Why should I dedicate so much of my life and brainpower to 24/7 oncall and managing development? No amount of money is worth the stress.

I hope I don't get flagged for this, just trying to bring up a somewhat controversial point. I support euthanasia. I think there is a level of suffering where it is unethical to encourage people to keep living, and rather that suicide can be a perfectly rational decision in those moments.

Now who are we to say if a person's suffering is enough or not enough to advocate that method? What if this new era of therapists better understand people?

I'm so disappointed at the state of HN. Instead of good faith discussion we have a bunch of keto anti-carb people pushing their narrative. Did you forget that a large number of people are Asian, eat large servings of carbs (rice) every day and live longer and are healthier overall than western people?

Wasn't the standard bodybuilder diet chicken, rice, and broccoli?

All of a sudden carbs are now "crap" and everyone tries to be in ketosis 24/7.

I watched someone get hired, literally do nothing, and it took 7 months for the company to let them go

If they were "literally" doing nothing, like not even joining meetings or logging in, they could be fired within a week. What you mean is they weren't writing code to the velocity and standard that was expected. Maybe that falls on you for not helping them onboard?

Because everyone and their mom has been recommending Toyotas for 20 years now, the price of used Toyotas have gone through the roof. They're still good reliable cars, just not cheap anymore like they used to be.

Yes there absolutely is a flood of skilled developers, in fact there's so many of them they're expected to solve two Leetcode hards in a 45 minute interview to get a job now. Look at how many people got laid off in the last year, a lot of them are skilled

Also perhaps hiring standards have just become too crazy. Most tech companies make us jump through so many hoops that only the top lets say 1% make it through. Well that same 1% can probably also make it through every other company's hoops too. So theoretically they can get as many jobs as they want.

But companies don't want to hire the top 25% or middle 25% they leave these hoops to filter average candidates out
