I used to think my daughter may never drive, because autonomous vehicles were rumored to always be just around the corner.

Now I think she may never ride in an autonomous vehicle. Do autonomous vehicles drive in the rain? We live in a northern state where snow remains on the ground for months at a time in ever shifting depths and banks along roads. Lidar is unable to see through the snow. Road surfaces are sometimes wet, sometimes snow covered, sometimes ice. Visibility can drop to zero.

I wonder if tech companies will spend the time and expense to solve these difficult problems for a rather small percentage of the population.

For me, it's to proxy the email IP address. Use Cloudflare for http, but using SMTP from your server exposes your IP.

Moved from Mandrill to Sendgrid for SMTP... had delivery issues, likely my fault. Moved to Sparkpost, NO problems. Much easier interface and onboarding for SMTP.

Guessing the photos are composites. The background is HDR, but HDR looks horrible on people, so they were shot without HDR and layered in Photoshop. In the second shot you can clearly see how the shadows are at different angles.

This should be higher.

Most likely not programmed by humans, at least at the highest levels.

When I was 8 or 9 years old I had dinner with a contemporary of Andre the Giant, Baron von Raschke. He was friends with my best friends dad. He gave me "the claw" (brainclaw). Life as a young boy doesn't get much better (except for blueberry pancakes).

North Dakotan checking in. I've seen this tower many times, from the road and up close, it's pretty uninspiring. Hard to get a sense of scale when it's so thin and transparent. Also, you can't see the view from the top (legally). What fun would the Space Needle, Empire State or Burj Khalifa be if you couldn't see what the view is like from the top?

I use Google's Pagespeed Service, which is free and in beta. They say they may charge some day. But the support... I have "proxy errors" reported, which would appear to be an error on their end. Contacted support via email and was told to expect a response within 3 business days. So that was Thursday morning, it'll be at least 96 hours before I get a reply. Maybe up to 120 hours. Glad I moved the site instead of waiting.

Space is full of a LOT of empty space. Maybe even more amazing to myself, is the scale works almost the same in inverse. There's also a lot of space at the tiniest scales.

I'm not surprised this is the top comment on a hacker site. But having watched my 5-year old son assemble a 300 piece set while following a 40+ page manual, gave me a new appreciation. He was obviously creating a new thing, even if not experienting. Not only did he have great pride in his creation, but he leaned a lot about 3D visualization and spacial awareness. Sign me up!

The article makes a good point. It appears Google storing old passwords indefinitely makes your account potentially less secure. So why do they do it?

I find it amazing 25-year old code still exists at all in a franchise like Madden. I played the original Madden. It bears little resemblance to the current generation. There's really not been a total rewrite in 25 years? Amazing.

I don't think cloud hosting will reach it's panacea until I can just upload a site or application, and be billed for what I use. No calculators, or intervention needed. Are weekends slow? It automatically drops a node. Get front page of Hacker News? Scales up automatically. Hosting that "just works".

On the face, appears to be a huge valuation for an overpriced thermostat and smoke alarm. But combined with their recent robotic acquisitions I wonder if this signals a move beyond the smart phone, and smart car, to the smart home? If Google engineers want to build the Star Trek computer, surely they want to build the Jetsons home.

I wonder what percentage of street lights actually have activity below them? What about a motion sensing light that has dual-brightness levels? A lower level when no pedestrian or car activity is detected, and a brighter level when it is. Not only would this save energy, and look very cool when a car drives down a deserted street as lights brighten in advance of it, but it could enhance security as late night prowlers would have attention attracted to them by neighbors and police.

I think it would be incredibly cool just to see your doppelgangers. How many people look like you, and how similar they are. Similar to searching for your name, only to discover other people have the same name, and the curiosity of who they are. Imagine searching for people who have the same face?
