The size of this discussion and the sheer number of different ways this can be done is mind boggling.

I'm all for having choices and I'm glad we're beyond choosing between FrontPage, Dreamweaver, and Notepad, but no wonder new people to web development are so overwhelmed.

I feel like number of comments should carry more weight than upvotes. Then upvoted comments could weigh the entire story up further too, pushing quality discussion over a simple upvote click.

What will replace phones that soon? Are you referring to smart watches and wearable tech? Wont we still use a phone as a primary device to tie it all together?

I absolutely love exploring all the food and coffee around Melbourne and I can't even remember the last one that didn't take PayPass. Even the market stalls and coffee carts have an MPOS or CBA tablet. Maybe a couple of super hipster places take cash only for the image, but I haven't actually found one yet.

I haven't carried cash or wallet for about a year now. All I use is my phone (CommBank app, which uses PayPass network). Whether it's a coffee, snack for my kid, weekly shopping or a night out, I can barely even remember the times I've been caught out. Maybe twice in a year. Only times I take my wallet out the door is if I'm driving (I live in Melbourne and mostly walk or take trams) or going to the Doctors or something that requires ID/Medicare.

Food trucks, weekend markets, everyone has an EFTPOS/MPOS or CommBank tablet in their business now.

What do they do with the data? Is it just for law enforcement to find people, or is there value in the data?

I think "censor" is the word OP is looking for, not "anonymise".

the actual editing feels very slow - painting something takes almost a second to update with the brush being very jumpy, reminding me using ZSoft's PhotoFinish on Windows 3.1 on my 4MB 386:-P.

It's completely and utterly indistinguishable from a native app on my PC (Firefox 57.0.4 (64-bit) on Windows 10). First thing I noticed was how smooth and flawless it was, even when I expand the canvas and go crazy with every single tool to make a big mess, it didn't slow down once.

It's a beta. You're helping them test it, so them collecting usage/statistics is completely fair. If you don't want to take part in the beta testing, don't install the beta and wait for the full release (which the creator said elsewhere in the thread won't require email or data collection).

In saying that, I do think a sentence above the email field saying "By taking part in this beta, you're helping us collect data to improve the product for final release, which will not require your email address or do data collection unless opting in" or some such.

Exactly why I use Dropbox instead of Google Drive, my bank's Paywave app over Apple/Google Pay, Todoist over Google Tasks, and even Firefox over Chrome (because of bookmarks sync, addons sync, form fields, etc).

I can't split my Email from YouTube (which I really enjoy as products and am very active on YouTube), so if those get locked, I can still live most of my life.

Tech names have lost the plot. We really really need to get past this "Pick a really common English word and name your brand that, so it's impossible to search for and confuses people when discussed" thing.

It's nowhere near as good as Picasa or Lightroom for bulk editing, sharing, and general photo library management. But it absolutely destroys Picasa for the actual editing of raw files. I'd say if post processing is your focus, it's without a doubt worth the switch. If you're more of a "shoot lots and manage in bulk", then no.

I personally find the file/library management aspect of Darktable so lacking that it's personally useless to me. I absolutely despise Adobe and would pay double what I give them for a decent Lightroom alternative, but it just doesn't exist yet and won't anytime soon.

We've used a Japanese multi cooker for years. Tiger brand. Does rice, steaming, slow cooked stews and soups, even cakes and yoghurt. I'm very surprised at everyone talking as though the Instant Pot invented it.

The last big Windows 10 update I did the other day completely reset me installation to stock. Wiped all my drivers including GPU, all my settings, reinstalled everything I'd tweaked over the months/years, the works.

I've been meaning to ditch Windows (again) for a while and this is the final straw.

Discord has absolutely replaced AIM/MSN/ICQ/IRC for my friends. Everyone I care to chat to uses it, and has it on all their devices, including phone, as our primary messenger. My circle of friends is admittedly nearly entirely techies (and some finance crowd who seem to love Discord too).

There's that little tiny one called Android too.

I'd love an e-ink dashboard in my car so it's not so glary, e-ink tablet that does a bit more than a Kindle but isn't a full media player (super thin super light with basic browser for wiki, news, rss, and email), ~20" e-ink screen on the inside of my apartment door with calendar and notifications and todolist, there's so many cool things we could do with the tech if we could produce it cheaper and bigger. Not everything needs to be able to play video.

You choose to sign up for email updates then. WordPress doesn't do it by itself. WordPress also has RSS still.

I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, but I'm still completely lost as to whether Bitcoin is basically a pyramid scheme set to crash massively, or something huge that will continue climbing.

Facebook themselves require you to log in to unsubscribe from emails. If you've disabled or deleted your account, you still get spammed daily, and there's quite literally zero way to unsubscribe.

I do too, and I've always wanted Winamp on Android. Just a full screen remake of the basic Winamp window. Wonder if this could be ported now with one of the JS->APK tools.

In Australia it might be to attract Gov clients? Not sure why the Home service would matter though other than Australians are big on using services located in Australia.

I have been thinking the exact same thing, but once again based on nothing other than a hunch and following lots of altcoin stuff from the sidelines.

Doesn't mean I don't regret throwing some BTC away when they were worth cents!
