I can count the number of multiple-choice tests I had on the fingers of my hands, and all of them were tests preparing for tech certifications.

When discussing the multiple choice format between students, we've always thought that it's way easier to get the guess the right answer between choices than to show how you got there.

It's even worse outside of math classes, say history, and you're asked "when did $COUNTRY get its independence", obviously, it's much easier when you have a list of choices to choose from.

Supporting IE7 is relatively easier compared to IE6 - so yeah, IE7 for me.

So far this year, no client asked for IE6 support.

Maybe dead in the US, where I live (Morocco), daily deals websites are growing like weed, and many users "discovered" online payment through them, IMO, they're not going anywhere.

I don't know about the US, but in Europe (and Morocco where I live), many freelance use "sales engineers" (technico-commercial in French, not sure if it's the correct translation), this person gets a commission for every gig he lands for the freelancer.

"Moving" from a language is a laughable concept for me.

As professionals, we tend to work with many constraints in play, and one of them, most of the time, is the language. It's not that the client requires me to use PHP, but not using it will be a hassle for the client afterwards, mainly, because of hosting and maintenance. Python and Ruby devs are quite rare where I live, thus, using PHP enables the client to find maintainers easily down the road.

Technically, I have no problem moving from one language to another (though, never tried a functional language), and I've done professional work using ruby in the past.

Frankly, reading HN discussions about PHP, I feel like they're missing the point, or maybe, it's because I live in a country where PHP is prevalent - there's a whole market here for PHP devs, I've been doing contract work for almost 3years now using XHTML/CSS/JS/PHP stack exclusively, most of the time with a framework, or even a CMS.

In all seriousness, in my opinion, there's not such thing as normal conversation, people are different, conversations too.

AFAIK, SE mods are not picked based on karma, you can nominate yourself to be mod, and users will vote according to many indicators, not karma only.

It was closed after 2 pages of answers and hundreds of votes - not so problematic IMHO.

I believe that "not having to screw around to make things work" doesn't apply to windows, or at least, not anymore. Do you recall specific situations where something worked out-of-the-box on Mac but required "screwing around" on a windows machine?
