Simultaneously though, those 80% of Americans that live in cities/within the typical commuting distance of a metropolitan area are also the ones that are usually serviced by at least one broadband or fiber provider. Because of this:

- Having slowly-increasing pressure on those often-monopoly broadband/fiber carriers because people have the option to swap to Starlink, adds competitive pressure for them to improve their service, reduce prices, etc

- The remaining 20% of the population that lives on the 60-80%+ of the land who currently have terrible options, but fit well within the density restrictions of current-gen Starlink satelites, suddenly have options

Unfortunately it’s a race to the bottom in most of America: If you pass such regulations locally or in your state, the data centers will simply choose to not build in your area of authority (county/state). Unless we were to pass sweeping, nation-wide regulations (which this administration is aggressively against because they believe we are in an AI arms race with China), those regulations/bans just drive the data centers elsewhere.

I guess it (network-level filtering) just feels like a dragnet solution that reduces privacy and security for the population at large, when a more targeted and cohesive solution like client-side filtering, having all apps that use web browsers funnel into an OS-level check, etc would accomplish the same goals with improved security.

How does ECH make it impossible for parents to control their children's access to computers? Sure they can't block sites at the router level, just like your ISP won't be able to block things at the ISP level, but you (the parent) have physical access to the devices in question, and can install client-side software to filter access to the internet.

The only thing this makes impossible is the laziest, and easiest to bypass method of filtering the internet.

Really that's the problem - Anticheat. Sure, at this point most games work on Linux. The problem is, most people don't play most games. Most people play a handful of games, and where the players go, the cheaters follow. In response, the game studios deploy more and more aggressive anticheat measures, ultimately breaking the tiny minority of people who would've otherwise been able to play the game on Linux/Proton.

Take a look at https://areweanticheatyet.com at some of the biggest games on the planet, and how most of them don't support Linux or Proton.

Still seeing issues on the OAuth flow despite a "a fix [having] been implemented". Looks like whatever happened probably trashed the session database since it's forcing Claude Code to re-auth.

I don’t think most people are arguing against the concept, or even implementation, of the system as developed. Obviously it’s both a publicity stunt and beta test as they learn how to build and operate a tunnel system like this. The concern is that much of the environmental harm that’s being done (according to the EPA) is repetitive, and that The Boring Company (TBC) actively pledged to hire an environmental inspector three years ago and is now being fined for having not done so. Given that, who knows how many violations that don’t leave a permanent mark are going unnoticed.

Do you think that they are going to ignore environmental laws for JUST this project, or do you think that is their modus operandi? I’d be happy to have a tunnel system installed near my home, even if there’s temporary disruption during the construction process. What I wouldn’t tolerate is active, and unmonitored (by TBC’s insistence on “self-monitoring”), pollution occurring near my home. Fines only cover so much, and un-polluting something after the fact costs far more than the fines that are being levied and, when it comes to pollutants that harm humans (like improper disposal of chemicals from digging, as they have been fined for), you can’t just “undo” the human harm with a fine.

Most videos I've seen recently show a system that, while functional, typically only has a handful of vehicles running simultaneously, each with carrying capacity for one party of up to 3 people.

It’s not that it lowers the maximum voltage that the charge controller/inverter can handle. It’s actually that the panels become MORE efficient in the cold temperatures, resulting in a (potentially unconsidered by end-user) increase in voltage, overwhelming the downstream BoS components.

Who knows! Minecraft continually loops through resurgences in popularity every few years. That said, I more meant there's an immense amount of inertia in the existing ecosystem, so even ignoring future years: simply launching a "generic Minecraft server" with all the usual bells-and-whistles to run a community of 20-100 people is a tall order.

Definitely interesting to see continued innovation in this space after so many years. At Hypixel Minecraft we forked Spigot (another modded Minecraft platform) back in late 2014 to be able to rip out a bunch of vanilla mechanics that we knew that we wouldn't need for our workloads and optimize the interactions with other pieces of our infrastructure, while still maintaining full compatibility with our existing Java plugins.

Honestly the biggest uphill battle that Hyperion is going to face is rebuilding the decade-plus of existing Java plugins and functionality that have become ubiquitous in the Minecraft ecosystem, like Permissions, Anti-grief, Anticheat, etc which have had decades of man-hours invested into perfecting their functionality. Some of this can likely be ported and knowledge reused, but _someone_ is going to have to actually do the heavy lifting of porting it into a language that has a (relative to Java) higher learning curve.

Have you _seen_ the tragedy that is occurring in primary and secondary education right now with students using LLMs for the bulk of their coursework? Humans, and most forms of life in general, are lazy. They take the lowest energy route to a solution that works, whether that solution is food, shelter, or the answer to a homework question or problem at work. To some degree, this is good: An experienced <animal/student/engineer> has well-defined mental pathways towards getting what they need in as little time/energy as possible. I myself have dozens of things that I don't remember offhand, but that I remember a particular google query will get me to what I need (chmod args being the one that comes to mind). This leaves mental resources available for more important or difficult-to-acquire knowledge, like the subtle nuances of a complex system or cat pictures.

The problem is a lack of balance, and in some instances skipping the entirety of Critical Reasoning. Why go through the effort of working your way through a problem when you would rather be doing <literally anything else> with your time. Iterate on this to the extreme, with what feels like a magic bullet that can solve anything, and your skills *will* atrophy.

Of course there are exceptions to this trend. Star pupils exist in any generation who will go out of their way to discover answers to questions they have, re-derive understanding of things just for the sake of it, and apply their passions towards solving problems they decide are worth solving. The issue is the _average_ person, given an _average_ (e.g. if in America, under-funded) education, with an _average_ mentor, will likely choose the path of least resistance.

From my understanding the problem is that the computer just....doesn't sleep if you have Sentry mode running. It's not that it's sleeping for a few seconds and then waking up, it's just fully awake drawing it's normal base load, which for HW4 [1] appears to be ~300W.

A good way to verify this if you've got a Tesla is how long it takes for the car to acknowledge commands sent via the mobile app. If they're near-instant (ignoring TCP latency ofc), the car is "Awake" and drawing it's full load. If they take 5-15 seconds, the car is Asleep and only polling it's LTE antennas for push notifications every 10s or so. If they timeout entirely, the car is in Deep Sleep and drawing almost no wattage (at least based on my observations with my wife's M3).

When in Sentry mode, responses are ALWAYS instant, so the car is fully Awake and drawing full wattage.

In Illinois, USA, there's outright no vehicle inspections AFAIK for electric vehicles whatsoever after the sale of the vehicle has completed. There's a yearly registration fee paid to the state, and the state has "emissions testing" for vehicles over 2y (model year) old, but EVs are explicitly exempt and so AFAIK the only inspections that would ever occur are in the event an owner has their vehicle serviced by a dealer.

There's likely minimal value to recovering it given how much telemetry they already have, plus having launched very similar boosters (test flights 5 and below, plus Starhopper) for a similar launch profile. Additionally, based on previous comments SpaceX engineers have made when towing an in-the-water booster back to land, making it safe for transport to active commercial waterways is a huge pain in the ass. There's also considerations to be made for protection of intellectual property: much harder for other companies to steal your trade secrets from the bottom of the gulf of mexico.

Keep in mind, splashing the booster down in the ocean almost always results in rapid unscheduled disassembly (explosion) of the booster. It lands upright but has no ability to stay upright on its own, so usually makes a soft water landing and then immediately tips over. The shock of the side of the booster hitting the water usually ruptures one or more pressure vessels, resulting in a nice fireball and destruction of the vehicle.

Even the Falcon 9 when it lands "at sea" is actually landing on a barge that is able to keep it upright (usually) and out of the water, but any booster vehicle that SpaceX (or anyone) launches that does a soft water landing is a write-off. The only real exception to this is return capsules with astronauts in them which are explicitly designed to land in the water and deploy buoys to keep themselves afloat while they wait for the Coast Guard to come pick them, and the capsule (which is a one-time-use component) up.
