That's how you ended up needing to arrest a bunch of morons who post all day about wanting to do exactly what they ended up attempting to do.

Instead what needs to happen is if execution is off the table, you very purposefully remind them, repeatedly, that there is nowhere to defect to -- you will not have quiet enjoyment of your Nazi coffeehouse, your Nazi bar, your Nazi... whatever... because the antifascists will not tolerate your behavior and invoke stand your ground the second you even hint at acting on your antisocial urges.

Speaking as an American... they can stay in Russia then, more power to them.

I remember seeing a video of two guys just walking holding hands and the entire town basically ready to jump them, not knowing there was a camera going.

If they want to live like victims, fine, that's a choice you can make, I just don't want them exporting their insanity.

Society is split like elsewhere, but the fringe parties like AFD are at 15% in general election weekly question [1]. This is Don Quixotery.

When you factor in most reporting about the American election (I'm American) only give percents in terms of voters (small portion of population), Trump also had ~15%.

This was a very serious incident, and the people who try these things should possibly be executed in a humane manner if this pattern of misbehavior continues.

That's not necessarily true. They don't have access to the internet or foreign media. Only propaganda.

That's wildly inaccurate, read "Nothing to Envy" then educate yourself on advancements in censorship circumvention since then -- they regularly get movies and films on USB paired with broadcasts into border regions.

Makes sense. You'd be amazed the things football fans say to you on the train pretty much anywhere but Kreuzberg.

(RIP Jetpak Alternative <3)

I really hate stereotypes but if you want a funny mental image, picture someone assuming you're a Nazi because you're dressed in all black, bald, and muscular, because they have no grasp of history and don't know there were multiple kinds of skinhead.

Picture them speaking in German, you don't reply.

Then assuming you're French, speaking in French (both times having some poor bastard commuter translate as you sit poker faced).

Then they try Russian for some reason.

Then when they finally speak in English assuming you're British you loudly say "What the fuck? I'm not a royalist and I'm not a Nazi - get away from me before I put your head through the fucking window!" and having them exclaim "He's American!!" and _literally running off_ the train as one of the few non football people who translated and the ticket taker start laughing.

I guess morons like that don't know that they check us for guns at the airport, but there's a special joy in doing a little finger gun through the window as some dumbass runs off to wait 30 minutes for the next train and hopes someone like me on the platform doesn't just throw him in front of the next one if he ever says those thoughts aloud again...

Anyways sorry for the wall of text, but Germany (and the rest of the EU) was really nice to visit - us Americans don't get much vacation so we get very grumpy when it's interrupted, and these types are TOTAL ASSHOLES.

The best part is the end, when they link up with the national guard and eventually Jake straight up dumps a a bunch of them into the cold embrace of space under logic that boiled down to "they could have stayed on their planet".

It's sad that nowadays the strategy of "repeatedly bust out of military prison and demonstrate increasingly scary powers until troops accept you as their new leader” doesn't give you control of the local guard base like it used to in the 2000s. (Or so I heard, I never had to go full Mr Robot back before there was a hit USA television show about black clad crypto anarchists skullfucking the system once and for all.)

My pet fan theory is that the entire "Marco discovers conspiracy theories about aliens on the internet that aren't actually wrong" is a metaphor for shit like how some members of GCHQ or whatever would straight up hint how much they want to have sex with children. (Look into the Peter Bright (sp?) case? I had one coworker I suggested shared those urges who would also occasionally make his twitter avatar a kid — rude little brony.

Anyways, IIRC one of the minor plot points was one of the school vice principals was a controller? If you replace "Yeerk" with "Serial rapist" you can keep a lot of the same text in the books, complete with completely justifiably taking someone out into the woods and torturing them as they starve to death, then having what adults find out just kind of shrug and go "Well kid, that guy was literally an alien bent on destroying our way of life”.

(Only, a realistic plot would be that the “alien” is a Russian illegal and total sociopath instead of a straight up alien from another planet if we were to actually take the above and try to turn it into a creative nonfiction ish script pitch... but sadly COVID hit as I was about to finally take the screenwriting course I'd intended to since undergrad, so I fear I'll never be able to turn one of my movie plot threats into an actual movie.)

Anyways, thanks for bringing back fond memories OP. Animorphs, Goosebumps, and the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich were some of my favorite books before the world went to hell.

I have a feeling you've never actually been there.

I've been Japan, and was lucky to visit as a civilian, rather than in a business or military context. I kept my phone off and used cash for the duration of my time away from my conference and had many informal conversations with Japanese citizens, who were overwhelmingly kind to me as I mourned the death of one of the last people on the planet who gave a damn about me.

Much of what parent said is accurate -- but paired with the fact you will almost never be subjected to their justice system as a white person.

To paint a picture, at the time I cruised on in from Haneda or whatever, the Deftones had recent released "Koi No Yokan", NK was once again threatening to do something nuclear, and I ended up racking a reputation as possibly being the next Ted Kazinski when I used a WISYWYG nuclear yield calculator[1] to show some folks who I shared office space with that based on the projected yield, they might take out the base, but folks at the Bankoku Shinryokan north of the island would just need to take some iodine pills and hope folks glass the North with conventional weapons.

And then, upon arrival, I apparently committed a minor diplomatic faux paux by drunkenly wandering into the neighboring karaoke booth, bumming a cigarette, and loudly declaring that I'd want the base closed too if the Marines kept raping folks in my hometown and crashing their helicopters into apartment buildings, both of which apparently had been a persistent issue for my new friends.

(They were initially a bit hostile because they thought I was a Marine ditching curfew because I was massive bald guy dressed all in black, but I think I may have gone too far in the other direction explaining in explicit detail why they should believe me that I wasn't in the CIA.... hehehehehe.)

Anyways, the times of Shinzo Abe, much like the man himself, are never coming back[3]. Incarceration just traumatizes folks and renders them more likely to act out upon release.

It is time to stop excusing bad behavior and join the younger generation of hackers and phreaks in a shared reality, and acknowledge hard truths like "Japan is so racist, they'd rather invent robots to take care of their elders than relax immigration rules" rather than make hand wavey statements like "They do have an issue with forced confessions" that excuse fascist behavior.

It is unacceptable to coerce a confession. Full stop.

(Sorry to be harsh, but there's nothing I love more than to be the living embodiment of a flavor of potato chip -- specifically, the "Cool American".)
