Yes. Rubygems is the project that was run as amateur hour, not Debian.

I'm not sure it's worth stirring this up again, the different viewpoints are already clearly discussed at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2059964, and the Debian Ruby maintainers have made several policy changes since then.

After trying to install a rails app on Ubuntu , frankly the entirety of ruby and its notion of how a mature language should be packaged is pure amateur hour. Rvm is a mess, the various versions are a mess. For example v1.9.3 appears to be considered the same as 1.9.1, and random bugs appear when moving between versions. WTF?

Do you mean what is covered at https://lwn.net/Articles/423732/ ? I don't think that makes Nussbaum look bad at all.

Why did we never hear about similar problems in the Python world? Both languages are pursuing similar solutions to packeges/libs problem: rvm/virtualenv gems/pypi and so on...

I had Lucas as a C++ TA in my 2nd year of undergrad (Grenoble, France), while he was a PhD student (and yes, when we saw his name on the curriculum, all of us who were slightly involved with the Debian community freaked out).

Really smart, nice and friendly guy– can't think of a better leader for Debian.

Slightly OT: How does it work? Who gets to vote and who can run for project leader? I never realized that there were open source projects where that many people were involved in voting a project leader.

Do you remember Starship Troopers, where serving in the military gave you citizenship, and citizenship gave you the right to vote.

Well, in the Debian project, citizenship is a commit bit. And the project leader is kept on till he's dead or they find someone better.

The DPL is elected among Debian Developers using a Condorcet method. Every voter gives a preference order between the candidates[1], and if there exists a candidate who would win against any other candidate, he's the winner. For example here is the graph of this election[2].
