Of course. This eventuality was discussed for months prior. It’s one of the less romantic facts about Europe that goes along with the rich history; truly antiquated sanitation systems.

Well, they tried cleaning it then people set up toilets specifically to poop directly into it and dirty it again with untreated raw sewage this time.

I don't get this behavior. Is it not common sense that you don't poop directly in the ocean or in the water, but a little further up from water banks where there is dirt in a hole in the ground? What am I missing?

We need to education about poop compost boxes. These are 30"x30"x30" boxes used as commodes. Add some dirt. Mix dirt every time someone uses it. Liquids seep out via a tube into the system. Majority of particles remain in the box. Use refuse later for gardening.

(I am making up the above information; is that how it is supposed to work?)

People have been trash talking these events, but honestly I greatly respect Paris for what they tried to do. It was ambitious and maybe didn't hit a home run, but I'd call it a solid base hit.

A few people barfed, yes, but the river will be cleaner forever.

I hope they don't give up improving now that the political gain will not be there. I was in Zurich last year and I was jealous of them being able to swim in the river with clear water. I don't if in reality is a bit polluted but it looked really clean.
