From TFA: They have modified the chemistry to PCPOSOS which is LK99 with more sulfur and copper.

The article lays out that there are claims in both directions.

Isn't the rigidity of the wires enough to keep the sample stable? This doesn't seem to be real magnetic locking.

On /r/lk99, one comment strikes ([1]):

This is a cheap trick - the coil wrapping around the sample literally creates an electromagnet.
The reason it's not unstable are because the two ends of the wire are holding the sample at each edge and coiled around the middle point of the sample, they are both tapering outwards like a V imagining that the point of the V is the sample.
The two wires are acting as a single hinge, thus it is held in place when it repelled from the fat stack of magnets underneath.
The reason it doesn't work with copper is that copper probably has less or similar resistance than the wire and thus short circuits the coil - electricity prefers the shortest path. The sample probably has high resistance (lol) thus the coil's current & resultant magnetic field is intact.

It doesn't seem to form a coil though. Positive and negative wires are separately wrapped around the sample. Current should flow straight along the surface of the sample. Or am I wrong?

Well, I have to slightly correct myself here. Even if it's not a coil, it will produce Lorenz force. Any current carrying wire (or any conductor really) will experience a force in a magnetic field. I think I'll wait for the cover of nature article before getting excited about superconductors again.

(Yes it could still be a scam even if it gets into nature but that seems like the minimum to me)
