What about the oil price and aviation fuel tax? These planes are less efficient than newer designs like 787 or A350.

They are readily-available, and the money earned from flying the extra passengers, even if less than what 787/A350 would yield, is still money earned.

tl;dr: opportunity cost.

I guess the planes are "extra" so would be really cheap from capital expenditure point of view.

I wonder if the aviation fuel tax can be thought of as helping European aviation industry, if A320 based single aisle aircraft have better range than Boeing 737 based ones so can be used more for smaller routes if fuel gets more expensive. ATR also has a pretty big market share for regional turboprops that could supplant regional jets.
