I'm so keen to have a drive in one of these. On paper they sound like a great step in the right direction.

What a nice-looking vehicle - both inside and out! Compare it to the lackluster Teslas! Honestly, I feel like I'm back during the Soviet times when everybody drove the same cars - given how many identical Teslas are on California roads today! I think this phenomenon of non-originality was started by iPhone!

EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are the two most exciting EVs on the market now.

My dream car would be the Ioniq 5, but with a Tesla infotainment system.

I don't like technology in my car - I never listen to music when I drive, never make calls, and only use my phone for navigation, so, [0] resonates very well with me!

The Model T Ford and the VW Beetle would like to have a word. If you'd like something "original" as you put it, then you better be prepared to fork up for that originality.

Funny I had exactly the opposite reaction. This looks like literally every other chunky pseudo-SUV 'crossover' on the road. Going purely on looks I would definitely choose a Model S over this car every day. On the other hand if I was spending my own money buying a practical car for daily use, I would easily buy the Kia.

edit: I agree that the interior of the Kia is one of the nicer ones I've seen in recent cars

Tangential, but what's Kia/Hyundai quality compared to Honda and Toyota? Will their future lineup allow 15 years of reliable ownership?

Kia/Hyundai cars are great. However in recent years there's been more than a few cases of engine fire.

I myself had one rental Elantra engine stall on me last year. It was at about 25k miles.

On the other hand I have owned a 14 Corolla, 18 RAV4 and 21 Highlander hybrid. Combined repair cost is $130 (Corolla battery swap).

My 2007 Hyundai Sonata lasted for 14 years with little issue. It was finally taken down by someone running a light.

It is interesting how often a new EV "goes straight to the head of the pack". Even the article suggests the Hyundai Ioniq 5 "went straight to the top of the class" when it was tested late last year.

This for me is why I'm currently cool about EVs. The technology is moving forward so quickly that even in the space of a year you could be driving around in "old tech".

It feels to me as if EVs are currently at the Motorola Flip phone stage of their evolution, with a new car offering significant performance enhancements released every few months and a gamechanger, such as solid state batteries, just around the corner.
