Are there economic reasons that support the decision making?

Are recruiting numbers really strong over the past year? Are they projected to remain that way? Is the military going to be using AI to reduce headcount?

Are they going to force a lot of older soldiers into retirement to make for a new younger cadre of loyalists?

In much of the US, internet companies run a racket. While there are often multiple providers to choose from, if you want reliable service at good speeds, you end up with two, or if you're really lucky, three options. One of those options is Starlink.

They don't have any real skin in the game.

Who cares if they're right about something? Are they putting money on the line? What is their P/L for being "right"?

Okay, let's flip it: why would Apple, Microsoft, etc.. agree with such a law? What would the trickle down be for browser makers and website creators?

Fear sells. Everyone is afraid of getting sued and being denied insurance. The answer is cameras!

Dividing people to vilify each other over race, religion, gender, ethnicity and even politics is incredibly profitable. Once they're afraid of their neighbors, they'll happily pay someone to protect them at every turn.

I meant to point out that, for the use-cases where functional languages are used - production performance seems very acceptable, compared to having to micromanage memory allocation.

Isn't the whole point of abstraction to not care about whats underneath unless you really have to? But ideally, you don't because the abstraction is "good enough"?

I think you'd trust someone with the keys when they've consistently shown that they can be trusted with less critical work. If you're having to constantly monitor someone's output, then promoting them is a liability.

The same applies to an AI model.

And, since the same model would be deployed by many teams, unexpected behavior from that model even for a small subset of those teams means that it can't be promoted.

Blame a litigious culture where agencies have far too much power to "fix" other people. People in many places in America live with a fear of losing their children or getting sued and losing everything.

I think this is application dependent. LLM's are quite good for brainstorming, even if they are not arguably creative, at least they draw from a lot of information that is already out there, which saves me time in researching and learning.

"You better be doing something in AI" applies to Startups - businesses that are expected to spend every penny as quickly as possible, to meet the metrics needed to raise the next (bigger) round of funding.

It is also not the same as, "If you want to be a profitable company...". For that you need to somehow make more money than you are spending.
