They have been committing atrocities since the late 40s, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

So I don't disagree that this is all a result of runaway capitalism. But also, and I know this is going to sound extremely anal retentive of me - but I wasn't born with an ability to create art - I learned.

Then when I was doing teaching (broad career, lol) I didn't find it too difficult to product my own content. Additionally I was also working in advertising for ages, and often created my own art. If I didn't want to create my own things, then I wouldn't be in a career where I was creating my own things.

I just don't know man. I was a creative once. I changed course, but I still feel so torn that I'm watching the entire creative process be taken over by non-creatives and then being argued out of the room that it's better.

(Edit, I would like to add that I'm no AI luddite, I just don't like the way it's being utilised)

It makes me sad, and to some extent offended, that so many people want to use AI to replace the human element in art. It dilutes what makes art impressive.

I don't think it is. Google in particular is just an advertising company. Youtube would not exist if it did not serve ads.

And ultimately, while yes your examples are modern services that provide us convenience and entertainment, at a deeply human level I still argue that they are not providing net positives to us. Bread and circuses.

Look, I am also not convinced that modern society, or at least the economic aspects of it, are providing a net positive for the average consumer either. Saying advertising enabling these high-cost ventures being a good thing makes me immediately question why these ventures are high-cost to begin with. Yes, advertising enables the superbowl. But the superbowl exists in order to sell advertising

This is a deep kettle of fish to be opening, but I don't believe that the world we have constructed around us is necessarily good for us.

I have been generally involved in the advertising industry for over 20 years, initially as my primary profession and now more on the side. But what I've seen in that time is that advertising provides absolutely zero positives to the consumer.

I wasn't actually comparing it in terms of dollars for dollars between the projects, more the national security aspect and the probability of the government pulling whatever levers are necessary to keep it going.

State by state, but that was massively blown out of proportion by the media. You were never at risk for saying boo about the lockdowns on social media.

But obviously if you tried to organise protests during lockdowns, that's a different kettle of fish.

But if you start making some big posts about Woodside etc, you can have AFP knocking at your door.

I just made a similar comment further down the chain here, but I frankly think the dollars and cents economics around AI is a moot point. Like the pentagon, they'll just pull money out of thin air, or from other departments, or just write things off like it never existed.

I don't actually think the current administration, or the people behind it, actually care about real world economics anymore.

Look at how the pentagon is funded. Trillions get poured in with zero accountability, dark projects that never get disclosed at all, and audits that never pass.

When it comes to military level stuff, it seems to exist outside of normal financial logic. They just invent money for it.

These debts mean nothing if the US government actually views AI technology as being on par with the Manhattan project. They'll just bail them out or nationalise them.

I'm in Australia, so we have a pretty open approach to online speech unless you're being really, really awful. Like really awful.

OR. You want to say something about US oil and gas companies, or Israel. Those two things will get you scrutinised.

Yeah, we had every playstation since the original, and a vast library of games. Admittedly I ended up with a digital PS5 (gift), so I ended up in the digital ecosystem. This will hurry me up into buying a disc drive for it I suppose.

I tend to agree about the lackluster AAA industry, but I don't think that's the gamers 'fault' for wanting indie games, more private equity and the share market environment forcing developers to generate slop as opposed to good titles. It's a sad way that the broader economy is going in that regard.

These companies are discovering that selling products to consumers is no longer the thing they need to do in order to earn money.
