They really need to build a board with a built in slot for NVMe 2 storage. Running stuff off an sd card is a data loss nightmare and upgrading with aftermarket NVMe stuff is annoying.

That sounds like strapping a jet engine onto a barn. No need to go with NVMe when SATA SSDs are still available and fast enough.

I guess they mean M.2, which makes everything more compact and cableless. It also supports SATA.

1.) Use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zram

2.) Setup your logging accordingly

3.) Let this setup write what changed only once per hour, or a few times per day to solid storage.

4.) If that doesn't suit your needs and you can live with only 4GB RAM, get one of the about a hand full to a dozen boards which do have M.2/MiniPCIE from other vendors, and maybe enjoy faster crypto.

5.) If 4. applies, still do 1!

6.) Wonder why it lasts so long a few years later with a grin.

7.) Alternatively hot-glue/duct-tape an USB-Keychain to a free USB-Port, and still do 1.

Seriously, use ZRAM!

The next iteration for Rpi X IoT should be industrial SBC grade with 10 year life in the harsh environment running clusters of Plan 9 cpu and fileservers backstored to NVMe X.

Having a running plan9 cluster since ~3years, auth (1) and cpu/auth servers (6) are all rpi's, just the file-server is a virtual x86 running in a DC (Hetzner), it's a great system, i really love it.

Next, having my Phone "better" connected to it.
