Off topic, but I was wondering what the green names signify since I started following HN. Can you please tell?

The article nicely points out that the decline of Volapük is connected to reform attempts that originated from within. It also mentions that Esperanto had similar issues and some people went ahead to create a derivative language Ido. What it doesn't mention is that why Esperanto continued evolving while Volapük fell apart. One reason usually attributed to its longevity is that Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto, became aware of human tendency to "improve" or reform constructed languages and saw it's been happening to Volapük. So he simply added into the Esperanto manifesto that the rules of Esperanto are "untouchable". So, he stated, that if you attempt to change parts of the language, you cannot call it Esperanto any longer, in an attempt to prevent diversion from the common roots of it.

And on every page, it seems.

As a response to those who asked questions here in the comments:

When I finally overcame the shock, the very first thing I did was to ask her if she, or a guest, indeed searched for, or otherwise "input" anything related to usb-sticks or water-proofness into a computer system. The answer was no.

I don't know what to make of it. I don't want to succumb to conspiracy theories of the sort that ambient sound is recorded by our devices at all times. Most plausible explanation is perhaps the one about cognitive bias.

March 2020, heydays of coronavirus paranoia. I came back home from somewhere, put my keys onto the dining table and went to the bathroom to clean up. My girlfriend, upon seeing the key-chain on the table started reproaching me for being careless about hygiene. When I returned from the bathroom I saw her washing the key-chain in the kitchen sink. This time I got angry and asked how come she hadn't thought that the usb memory-stick attached to the key-chain would be destroyed when being washed. I dried the keys along with the usb-stick, sat down at my table, opened up Facebook only to be greeted by an ad on top about water-proof usb memory sticks. I felt a chill ran down on my spine.

Fun article indeed but the data the author has collected, however, is sloppy. Being Turkish, I needed to verify "mantı" on the binary coded features table I and saw, to my dismay, that only the "steamed" is marked "1" among the cooking options, which is wrong even if you consider all variations. Even the wikipedia page correctly states that it is usually boiled or baked.

There was a period where I started seeing Webpack everywhere, being used by everyone, so I felt obliged to try it. I struggled with the concepts and configuration and eventually realized that I completely failed to figure them out. It was a heavy blow to my developer self confidence. Fortunately I recovered when I discovered Parcel shortly after. "No config" immediately caught me after the frustration. I'm grateful for and still use it.

Care to share the tech stack behind the game? Seems that you used a cross-platform technology to make it runable on several OSes.

If you take a statistics class, one of the very first things that are taught is to be careful not to infer a wrong cause-effect relation when presented with a "correlation".

A typical example is "given any city, there is a strong correlation between number of churches and number of crimes commited." This is pretty much true everywhere in the world but that does not imply one is causing the other. This correlation can simply be the natural outcome of more populous cities having both in higher numbers compared to less populated ones.

Excellent work, and indeed it sounds pretty much neutral. One question though: I always thought Esperanto pronunciation and letters map quite one-to-one with Turkish, have you considered basing your work on Turkish instead of Polish?

Except ŭ, Esperanto vowels have exactly the same sound as they do in Turkish. Among the consonants, ĥ and c don't map, but all others do. Even ĉ, ŝ, ĝ and ĵ map to one specific letter with the identical sound.

I had so many “whoa!” and “wow!” and “this is amazing!” moments while checking it out that I didn't get out of my chair until almost midnight. I didn't even notice the house had grown dark around me.

I had pretty much the same experience, but the medium was Duolingo. I studied Lernu later. Don't agree with Chinese, as you would probably be just starting in 6 months, whereas you can reach near fluency in Esperanto in that timeframe.

A few days ago, I also received the same message from a friend with a link to a fake youtube page, but unlike you, I actually clicked it despite intuitively knowing that it was malicious. Seemed like a "regular" phishing attempt but I now wonder if it is more than that, having read this article.

I do. I cannot use dark themed text editors for a long time even though I fully understand and feel that over time it becomes tiring to the eye. I can't explain the reasons why I keep using the white background because I don't exactly know, but I think I find it a bit difficult to keep my focus on what I'm reading (or writing). Feels like I'm getting lost in the code that I'm editing, can find the relevant part as quickly as I can with a bright background. Maybe it has something to do with habit, which can change upon forcing myself, I don't know.

Interesting. This is the first thing I thought, but when I fed "lazy" into google, it happily accepted and displayed the results, so I thought there might be something else. But teh text editors that I tried indeed don't match the characters when I search them.

Because smoking as a habit has very little to do with nicotine addiction. The psychological addiction is the key. After a long period of smoking it takes only a few days to fully overcome nicotine withdrawal whereas it takes much longer time and effort to get rid of the habit itself. Smoke, gestures, the ritual, everything related to smoking becomes a part of your identity, so replacing the whole package is easier compared to eliminating everything but the chemical aspect.

Not started working out but I also ceased smoking about 15 months ago and replaced it with vaping. Tremendous increase in life quality followed.
