It's not about safe spaces or offensive ideas. It's about enabling sexism and racism to freely propagate while telling minority groups that it isn't harmful despite past experience.

Really?? Because when my coworkers and I meet someone like this we are all amazed and respectful. No offense, but I have a hard time believing that people become the worst versions of themselves because of your private behavior. Sorry to be so curt, but I’m tired of this sort of circle jerking going on in HN as of late. what you say may be true, but this sort of commentary is rampant lately.

I too wish for this. As a trans person I learn a lot from videos. They unceasingly think I want to want cringe compilations that bash trans people.

I used to really love HN for the good parts. Even back when I first started lurking, you would see waves of mean and incorrect comments, but it ebbed at times. These days the good stuff seems to be getting drowned out more and more. It feels like the polarization of discussion based social media is finally consuming this place like a cancer. I’ll always love the things I learn here, but I’m driven away from the discussions more and more.

I agree with you here. The majority of the people involved are trying to do something good. I’d wager the egomaniacs are a much smaller percentage than those who want to build better things.

Totally agree. I've largely quit commenting here at all because of it. I always thought gross polarization of topics would never come to HN, but here we are.

Holy shit HN is extra today. In this thread I counted maybe three responses that were meaningful. The rest were armchair quarterbacking from a lot of folks on how to do it better or how the product sucks without substantive feedback. What happened to HN? Nearly every thread is like this anymore. This quote is becoming more and more relevant here.

I do think most people realize it. When I’ve been around the country, when SpaceX launches come up, people are amazed by it.

I’ve seen the unfortunate side effects of losing these types of folks. I’m also a believer that though this happens through the natural course of life, it is also happening more and more to younger developers as well. I’ve seen plenty of talented senior and principal engineers leave organizations at the 7-15 year mark, in their prime, because of what software shops are becoming. Sure, it’s easy to argue that there has ways been a vein of sweatshop mentality to the software profession, but it’s growing to extreme levels. The attitude of the startup mentality of working yourself to the bone seems to have become a model for all size organizations. I’ve always believed our field, though called computer science, is equal parts science, art, and philosophy.

The art, science, and philosophy is being replaced with deadlines akin to working in other fields where timelines are nearly exact. Immature CEOs and CIOs think that because their disciplines are exact, that they can will-into-existence complex line of business software by working developers harder than ever, and firing those who aren’t dedicated enough.

The brain drain of our profession is happening because the art of gardening (making software) is being slowly replaced by factory farming versions of producing software.

I’m not amazed. While many stacks support it, most organizations still have lift on their end to implement this behind the other “priority” customer change requests.

I’m not 13 years into my career (three under the table at a hometown co and ten professionally), I’ve had the mom and pop shop experience, the big corp experience, and currently the startup experience. I’ve found the same abuse everywhere, but it’s not always caused by top level executives. I think the abuse in software has a dynamic that other industries don’t have. A lot of product managers and IT managers don’t understand what we do (and I say that on behalf of devs, ops people, the whole works). They want to look good for their executives and they overpromise, or they start treating us like garbage because they are afraid not to have anything to show in their weekly updates with their boss.

When product managers and CIOs don’t have anything to show, we get tossed under the bus. I’ve never been a fan of the dev unionization movement, but I’m becoming more of a fan it by the day. I think of how I feel after having given my all to my career, and I can’t imagine how young H1B professionals feel when the abuse they put up with is far worse than what I’ve dealt with.

Based on knowing and being firsthand friends with several Midori devs, I’m going to assert that this is simply not true. The majority of them were just reassigned when the project was cancelled.

Many of the innovations from Midori were included in other projects. The project may have “failed” but it was far from a failure.

I’m interested in this too. My credentials aren’t nearly as amazing, but I’ve been in this industry a long while now and I think this is excellent.

Hey look, I hear you, but why is this always the counter argument when women do this? Men have, in the past and present, held tight knit groups that may not be explicitly stating that women are excluded, but that aren’t supportive of women being in those groups.

If women felt liked they belonged in this industry, they wouldn’t form groups like this at all. Furthermore, don’t strawman them by saying you wouldn’t associate with those who would exclude based on gender, ethnicity, etc. The article clearly states that this is a place for women to seek advice and mentorship from one another. Please don’t bring any other factors into this when the article is clearly about a group that is accomplishing a well-meaning goal.

Or better yet, don’t fall for the monotoolism trap and use both! I regularly use EF for inserting lots of hierarchy using one transaction, and dapper for fast view/materialized view reads. It’s an excellent combination.

Honestly, while your criticisms are mostly fair, your approach is really unprofessional here. Yes, Microsoft is a massive company, but human beings are making this and I’ll guarantee you none of them are happy with where the product is. Please consider showing some compassion.

I’d also add that I use 2017 and 2019 daily, and build by build, I see massive improvements for performance.

I would love to see pharmacy advertising banned from television and streaming services during certain times of the day. I would also love to see the same advertising banned on billboards. If [1]this is true, we are exposed, on average, to 5000 advertisements a day.

Pharma advertising culture has lead us (in America) to become a culture of self-diagnosers and a culture where we don’t want to be exposed to any emotion or pain. This is not to say that drugs are bad, because they have amazing uses in the world. I know many people that benefit from antidepressants, antipsychotics, and so-called illegal substances to be functioning members of society, but along with that, I know plenty of people who have been taught by the big shiny box that they don’t need to feel the pain of a loved ones death, or a bad breakup.

I find this woman’s account of going through a hysterectomy in Germany to be enlightening when compared to our own culture.

People who receive downvotes can sometimes believe that anyone who is downvoting is doing so because they must support the opposite of what the poster believes. This, in my experience on HN, isn't necessarily (or even often) the case.

Bingo. The majority of the time when I downvote anyone, it's because they are trying to seem more intelligent by overusing linked academic articles or by overusing vocabulary that doesn't really fit. Anytime I see someone using something as an excuse to "talk" when they really have nothing to say, they get downvoted. Yes I realize that's subjective and not perhaps what the downvote is for, but that's also my choice.

Contrarion types on the other hand (and I don't mean the intelligent rhetorical folks who provoke good discussion) get a downvote immediately. I have no time for anyone who wants to disagree just to disagree so that they can make themselves look more philosophical or "deep".

I know this makes me an asshole, but at least I'm not treating the downvote as an "I disagree button"

I'm happy to be harsh because I've had years and years of experience dealing with IBM.

Their tools are trash for the cost they want. The majority of their offerings are overengineered and prone to failure in a production setting.

They are pros at selling to non-technical management, all the while IT employees get stuck dealing with the aftermath.

We ended up getting stuck with the IBM version of work item management, called Jazz Team Concert. From the "source control" to the actual setup and configuration, the product was a nightmare. The worst part was when we looked at license renewal. They wanted three quarters of a million dollars for something that was essentially dog shit wrapped in cat shit.

In case you thought I might be on the fence with IBM, I'll add one final clarifying point:

Fuck IBM.

Not only that, but I found myself censoring my own private thought processes, in the silent comfort of my own home, because of the public opinion of people I follow on Twitter.

I deleted my Twitter account because of this. I realized it was an empty echo chamber of inaction. If anything you say can be interpreted in a way that the hivemind can destroy you over, they will do it, even with incomplete information and little to no proof.

I've determined that the key for me is to limit the inputs. My inputs now are a few cultivated social sites (this one, one or two tech sites), books, and podcasts.

In my opinion, feeding my mind properly has lessened my feelings of burnout. If you have the choice to feed your brain digital junk food, don't be too alarmed when it starts taking of too much space, like fat.
