Reminds me of the debate at my university when I tried to declare my computer as my "instrument."

"That's not REAL music." I changed schools, eventually changed majors.. but now the place that rejected my computer now has a "music technology" degree.

editing to say that music that wasn't real went on to be a massive genre - hard to put "creativity / art" in a box.

What do you think about this device? I bought an iPhone SE and dropped it onto the rug in my living room and it broke so bad it won't even come on. I'm never buying another all-glass phone again.

I checked out the specs on this phone - I'd love to hear what you think about it.

My grandfather was a "well witcher" (Appalachian roots here). Many believe that's woo woo or some kind of super power. The man was incredibly intelligent and resourceful and he had a reputation for finding water every single time he dropped the drill into the ground.

When I was a kid I used to go to sleep listening to stories of my dad and his dad driving around on a 2 ton truck with a 3 ton drill and how the brakes always went out. Somehow they always lived to tell the tale.

Haven't thought about this in a long time. Good memories.

Not GP but I also have severe reflux - I've had it years. It's been really bad lately.

In related information I've found that fortified yogurt helps not only my reflux but also improves my mood. But it never seemed to be enough to actually solve the reflux problem.

Just ordered the supplements. Truly hope this solves the problem.

Whoa I just realized that I have a hiatal hernia too. I didn't realize that's what that was. I hope this is a day of solutions!

My personal opinion (backed up with a certain amount of experience) is that much of these suicides are due to a soldier being traumatized, then coming home to try to cope with trauma responses. Some then turn to drowning the trauma with alcohol and other bad stuff. That's when the spiral really accelerates.

Unfortunately the stigma you mentioned feels so much worse when someone also hates themselves. They don't recognize the stigma for what it is and start believing they don't deserve to get better.

And yes this seems to be a huge problem across humanity. Overdoses and suicides are at historically high levels. And celebrities with tremendous resources still suffer the same way. Which tells me the technology just isn't there.

I don't see an email address in your bio, can you add some contact information? Or at least come back here and post where you listed the site maybe?

Thanks!

I’m glad you posted the follow up comment because I missed your point at first. But I can actually see your point, that maybe he’s making a political statement to avoid the more ugly truth.

It does sound like a hassle to be famous enough to get cancelled. I like the idea of niche fame, where you’re some huge fish in a tiny pond - just enough to make a living but not enough to get cancelled by the horde

These are great tips. I do miss my days spent outdoors (took a few years off to run a flower planting crew at a landscaping company and run some long distance races).

As for nutrition, I do think I'm doing well there. Other than a sugar fix at night, I eat pretty good/healthy/whole food.

Unplugging is probably my short term answer. I'm also going through the stresses of resigning from my day job and ramping up my side work, so that's a source of intensity too.

Ha! Glad to see the interest... In fact, I just resigned and am firing my blog back up. Sounds like my first post will be this!

The short answer is that each movement is a whole body movement, using kettle bells, slam balls, or barbells.

Almost every workout is a "super set" which means I either go back and forth between the 2 several times, or go down a line doing 3-4 movements.

I almost never rest more than 2 minutes between sets (big timer on the wall). Sometimes after a very hard set I might rest 3 but that's rare.

I can see this will be too much for a comment so I'm going to write this up. Thanks for the interest!

I started with a trainer one year ago next week, doing 2 days per week with him and one day of "plyometric" drop-set/super-sets (which seems to be a fancy way of saying workout almost to failure).

Total time investment? 30 minutes, 3 times per week.

My entire physique has changed, including greatly increased muscle mass, energy levels, and stamina to do whatever physical activity. I've also dropped 30 pounds and have completely eliminated back problems.

I feel this pain deep inside my brain. My head is like a million points moving in several directions at once, all the time. In fact, I just set up another appointment where I am going in full throttle for whatever medication I can get. I am completely exhausted trying to keep these points all lined up in a straight line.

Yes, the Apple Watch was a fantastic purchase. I started noticing how much (or little) I was active some days. I started walking regularly the day after I got my watch, and it's been a slow build up since then. Obviously it wont' do the work for you, but it's a great tool if you're ready to get started.

I also bought the Sony 1000X-M3 headphones, and they have indeed been a game changer. My work puts me in "war room" situations several times a year, and having noise-cancelling headphones allows me to continue deep work even when there's a crowd of people.

Whoa thanks for posting this, I didn't know about your service. I've recently created a new info capture / database process and this tool will come in handy!

I didn't know this. Do you know how long that feature has been in place? I was uploading my screenshots to a completely different app for OCR until recently.

I've changed my whole process now so it's not nearly as critical a step as it once was. But I still use it in passing.

I'm glad to hear you made it. I have a similar story, except mine involves health problems and homelessness in adulthood. I "made it" from living on the streets in Austin TX to being a senior manager at a big company. It's SO HARD to dig yourself out of that, and I just wanted to say GOOD JOB!

This reminds me of the first time I took LSD. I ended up at a hippy coffee shop with a Canadian soccer player (also tripping) playing a game of chess with the goal of losing.

It’s hard to play to lose! We ended up having a long conversation with a bearded man who kept telling us he’d been where we were.

Of that I have no doubt.

As someone who has spent many years working in defense / government contracting, I think you're touching on a really big reason a lot of people work in this world.

Many years ago, when my career first started, I was an idealist who thought the way I could give back (as someone who couldn't get into the military for physical reasons) was to work in the defense sector. I also tried very hard to get interviewed by an SV company, but I didn't qualify for an interview due to going to the wrong college and getting the wrong degree.

And I have worked on some seriously badass programs and with some really cool systems and people. In my older age, it's funny because I've come full circle. I'm actually using my experience, and the new all-remote world, to interview with some tech companies. I'm also starting to sour a lot on working with the government and military because my idea of "giving back" has become much more cynical. EDIT- I meant to say here that I've become much more cynical, and working with the government no longer feels like "giving back." Nowadays I give back by working on social issues.

BTW, I'm also upvoting / interacting with your comment because (a) I think you're getting downvoted by people who disagree with you, rather than by people who think you've broken some rule, and (b) I think your perspective represents a pretty common way of looking at SV from the outside world.

When you're 1, a year is your life.

When you're 2, a year is 1/2 of your life.

When you're 3, a year is 1/3 of your life.

When you're 30, a year is 1/30th of your life.

Your frame of reference for time is changing every day. Each day feels relatively shorter than the day before.

Strangely though, some years feel very long. To me that's explained by how much activity is going on, day to day. Like how when work is not busy, everyone says "slow day." 2020 for example was less busy for most people (stuck at home), so it was a "slow year."

I dunno, that's my experience anyway.
