The problem with online submissions is that it's quite difficult to uniquely identify people online,

Does the census form ask the social security number of the person? Social Security number would uniquely identify individual online or offline.

and a large portion of the population doesn't use computers.

According to this http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=wb-wdi&met=it_net_us... over 75 per cent of the population is online. And this is probably more in New York City with easy access to internet cafes.

It's also expensive to go through records of people who submitted both online and mail-in forms with slightly different entries and determine what is and isn't a duplicate.

My proposal is for online form only.

The Census doesn't get to assume that everyone uses a Google account that's tied directly to their real-life identity, and they need assurance that their software is extremely secure.

Again, can this be solved with asking social security number of people submitting their forms?

I built this app to learn Google App Engine http://hello-1-world.appspot.com/about and it will be good for people to find hot spots where people at. But I've been unable to find an initial user who would seed the network. The fact that it has no branding and there is no activity and the purpose is not clear are facts against it.

I would think that Dyson would know that Newton did not write one single equation ever. He worked with proportions.

Thanks for this analysis! It makes sense. I believe one of the reasons to launch early is to observe how users actually use the product. Now I am thinking maybe I need more than a co-founder, or in addition to a co-founder, “brand ambassadors” or paid users who would try out the application. I may put an ad in Craigslist and see what happens there. Thanks again to everyone for great comments.

I am not sure. I tried email because I was new to Google App Engine and I was trying to learn how to send and receive email; and also email appeared to be easiest. I vaguely remember reading here that the younger generation do not use email anymore. An sms version will make this service much more fun to use, but that's something to consider later.

As the user of this app I was thinking socially active fun-lowing females of all ages; probably living in a big city going out at least a few times a week; and for whom enjoying the company of girlfriends is an important part of their lives.

I don’t believe that the co-founder needs to be a “party girl”. If she goes out once in a while with her friends and uses the application, that should be enough.

I think this is a slow process. At this stage, just testing if registration works, avatars upload, proper emails are sent and so on.

What are the benefits for the users of your app?

May I suggest these:

  1. bragging rights
  2. finding hot spots
  3. posting a picture from the outing to keep a record of social activity

Why a new "specialized" social network?

I am interested in the fact that

2. the network will grow from one initial person and would be possible to reach anyone from anyone (I am not expert in the science of graphs so this sounds interesting to me)

Is this because there were no discussions in Ireland about your search subject; or is it because Google indexed only US discussions?

The nice comparison chart there shows that, for the purposes of signage, the difference is academic. The sign for the G train set in Arial or Helvetica will make no difference for riders. Or "Exit" in Arial or Helvetica... no perceptible difference.

My experience is that the easier to bookmark a page the least likely I will get back to it (except the two dozen or so in the bookmarks bar in Chrome).

I built for my own use with Google App Engine this service I call "ting" (sample search: http://ting-1.appspot.com/rt?rt=startup) and with each link I want to save I enter tags and a summary; this way I know I only save pages that I really believe will be useful to me in the long run. (I also cut and paste the link, making it even more time consuming)

I think the title is misleading.

Distraction may not be irritating but bothering someone is always irritating and annoying and leads to stress. But creativity comes from relaxed state (daydreaming etc).
