I am able to successfully poll the RSS feed, but the JSON one is returning an error. Only JSON Feeds that conform to https://www.jsonfeed.org/version/1.1/ are parsable by the software.

This project actually started off as a GitHub Action to trigger a daily sync, with a Python script that polled pages and saved the results. A static site generator then built the site using the data from the polling process.

Good question. I haven't found this to be an issue yet, perhaps because of the infrequency with which resources are accessed.
With that said, I can't guarantee this is not an issue. There are a few feeds that return errors that I need to investigate.

The open source version is a bit different from the hosted one: the open source code involves running the polling script, then building a static site (which is how I run the site for several months as a single-user project).
I am planning to move the polling changes upstream soon and then figure out a plan for open sourcing the full project.

I have seen excellent performance with Florence-2 for OCR. I wrote https://blog.roboflow.com/florence-2-ocr/ that shows a few examples.
Florence-2 is < 2GB so it fits into RAM well, and it is MIT licensed!
On a T4 in Colab, you can run inference in < 1s per image.

Great question! I work for a computer vision company (Roboflow) and have seen computer vision used for everything from accident prevention on critical infrastructure to identifying defects on vehicle parts to detecting trading cards for use in video game applications.
Drawing bounding boxes is a common end point for demos, but for businesses using computer vision there is an entire world after that: on device deployment. This can be on devices like an NVIDIA Jetson (a very common choice), to Raspberry Pis to central CUDA GPU servers for processing large volumes of data (maybe connected to cameras over RTSP).
Note: There are many models that are faster and perform better than YOLOv5 (i.e. YOLOv8, YOLOv10, PaliGemma). Roboflow Inference that our ML team maintains has various guides on deploying models to the edge: https://inference.roboflow.com/#inference-pipeline

The algorithm of what happens is:
1. You provide a sitemap.
2. All URLs in the sitemap are downloaded.
3. The HTML from each URL is read, extracting the page title, description, and contents.
4. The contents are processed using a search algorithm. This tool supports TF/IDF and BM25, two commonly-used search algorithms. I use Python packages that implement these since there are many people who have implemented these algorithms reliably.
5. A link graph is calculated that tracks all links between all pages.
6. When you run a search, the algorithm you chose (BM25 or TF/IDF) will run to find related documents. This is a keyword search. Then, results are weighed by the number of links to the page. This weight is useful if a site talks a lot about topics with the same keywords; by using links as a ranking factor, posts that are more connected to others will be elevated in search. Google pioneered the idea that links are "votes" on the relevance of content (although this tool doesn't use PageRank like Google).I am glad to see more projects in the vein of helping people find research papers. I am delighted by the discourse of papers on HN. Indeed, the comments on research papers here can help me better understand something that's outside my field of expertise. But HN is not specifically for research. Thus, it feels like there is room for another space for people to come.
I like the idea of subcategories. Some notes on the experience:
- When I load the page, it takes 1-2 seconds for papers to load. This doesn't feel great.
- The grey colours in the list make the page hard to skim. I recommend a darker colour for the text.
- The colour of the navigation links is too light. It is hard to see the links.
- The information density is spot on. Amazing work!
This is a community project. Try to get a few people on one niche who know what they are talking about commenting on your site actively (This HN post may help you find those people!). If your site became good at computer vision, the field in which I work professionally, I'd be there every day.
