That wasn't a zero-click infection attempt. You had to actually click on the link to get infected. This could happen on any service that allows you to send links.

They'll create a new key and your contacts will be notified that your key has changed.
The screenshot is not cropped and it has a list of the projects affected in the article. I agree the information is still sparse.

It's been leaked from UK intelligence and yesterday Russian war plans were captured that said essentially the same thing:
No short of sufficient size yet
"Are you guys ready? Okay. Let's roll!"
Isn't that obvious?
An exploit is to encryption as a sword is to a shield.
We don't regulate shields.
I'll take that combo. Quit on the first day, live on Bali for 2 years.
SS: The big eight newsgroup hierarchies just had the key that controls group creation and deletion updated to a secure key length.
"What was all this about? In three weeks, an IRC network that’s lasted for twenty years was flown into a mountain. Was that the plan all along?
Or is it wrong to ascribe to malice or forethought that which can be more adequately explained by stupidity or drug-fueled mania?"

After that, at every turn when Andrew Lee has been given the choice between doing the right thing and acting like a comic book villain, he has chosen the latter.
Removed any restraint on staff, tried to bribe FOSSHOST to be the face of his operations, hired known trolls and right-wing extremists as staff.
More materially, he has killed or driven away ##linux, #fsf, #gnu, #archlinux, #gentoo, #fedora, #ubuntu, #wikipedia and OVER 700 MORE PROJECTS:
https://github.com/siraben/freenode-exodus
And he is not done yet. He has announced that soon he will switch the whole network over to a new irc daemon, which he will fail at because he doesn't know how and the people who do won't touch him with a 7-foot pole:

You are correct. This will drive everyone away. Which is why we have graphs like this:
https://netsplit.de/networks/top10.php
Freenode is dying and the staff are actively killing it.
Actual quote from Andrew Lee:
[19:44:54] <@root> mst: If you really need a comment, just say root said, "fck irc cloud"

According to this tweet, the ban was not a mistake:

"Connection closed unexpectedly: You are banned from this server- IRCCloud is no longer welcome on freenode (2021/6/13 12.46)"
Having decided to move their channels to Libera, with a final transition date of June 25th, the Free Software Foundation channels were seized by freenode staff early today.
Staff continuing on as freenode staff is really dodgy, especially now that #python was just manually hijacked in the last 24 hours and Python foundation staff klined. Not a good look to be in such company.
Fosshost just announced that they have discontinued the previously announced partnership with freenode.

An outage of the nickserv IRC service on freenode, combined with the "nickserv" username not being reserved for services, caused widespread leaks of passwords on freenode to unknown parties. Freenode is responding by quieting people who ask uncomfortable questions.
The list of projects that have left freenode has moved to: https://github.com/siraben/freenode-exodus (as indicated in the gist)

Nary a week [1] after leaving freenode over the catastrophic management decisions made there, Fosshost partners with freenode to "launch co/cross branded public and tenant-facing SaaS offerings".
Much can change in a week.

To be fair, it will always be easier to find news about something that did happen than about something that didn't :-)
Scroll to the very bottom, there's a couple.
A daily growing list of currently 451 public projects that have left Freenode for other networks following the takeover by Andrew Lee and subsequent takeover of many channels by his organisation. Some projects had 100 channels, others only one.
