I don’t think that is as much an issue as all of the potential issues that would be dragged up by discussing any of the questionable or explicitly illegal content hosted on Reddit. The first time anyone ever saw a Reddit mod was seeing an adult man argue it was ok for him to moderate a subreddit consisting solely pictures of underage girls titled jailbait.

None of the time that libertarian beliefs could protect civil liberties is it ever taken seriously. It exists solely to launder corporate protections and deregulation.

Nothing significant happen to the NSA after the Snowden leaks, nothing significant happened to the FISA court. Also I don’t get how something like CBDC ever exists because of how powerful Visa is.

The way I would solve all of this is make disappearing servers so you can just share a server link and add people in the interface that way. I have almost never added people externally most of it comes from in server interactions.

Just get a job where you have to pick up every call you get and some of them won’t be spam!

All that matters is that Facebook continues to be generally disliked by anyone who would run the next Instagram/WhatsApp/Oculus. But as recent events such as Figma show anything it probably just means another 0 so they have to spend 10,20,30 billion instead of the 1 or 3 they used to.

I know it’s only been a day or so but this is bad only because they are unbanning boring posters and none of the fun ones who got banned. Sad to see paring back of moderation happen only to groups like this.

Texas is the opposite of this situation because they purposely didn’t connect their grid to anyone else. The US equivalent for mismanagement would be the Colorado River.

The real problem with this situation is we are at a point at which deploying fixes to these problems take so long that even discussing it feels useless.

The real answer is they want to reduce the chance of someone intentionally using it offline because it’s more convenient or easier in a specific situation.

Yeah a few times in the start I would always get egg upgrades from 12 to 18 or even one time 36. It happened for a few other things and I do think if you did it frequently enough you could learn how to game it but nowadays it’s riskier.

Yeah it worked for a while for me but the person I’m getting the stuff for has all the alerts on their device so I just turn most of the substitutions off. There were a few times where I had generous substitutions but I think they reigned those in.

Walmart has also fed into this a lot by making it so they are your one stop shop by making it ship stuff that isn’t in stock at your local store. They also by default will give you substitutions if you are doing an online store pickup or delivery order which only has more room for abuse or manipulation of substituting your items for things they need to get rid of etc.

I only use it for a family member but they have intentionally continuously degraded the ui/ux to make it so you fall into these traps and have even basically made it so all of the filters reset every time you search.

You can look at many accounts from the mid 2010s but the one I can recall the most clearly was FB updated to the algorithm and everything was fine. They then began actively suppressed people who were posting YouTube links a few months later. They told at least Phillip Defranco that the reason was they should advertise. They then came back months later and instead said why not post your videos here. This failed policy years later re-emerged as the video push for news organizations where FB intentionally deceived them into pushing into video to on the platform only for them to later update to honest video view tracking and make all of the media companies realize there was much less viewership than they were initially told was there.

I don’t think that it’s that they can’t cook at all. I do agree you should learn more about it in general for reduction of waste and food safety. A lot of the problem however is people don’t ever get over the hump where the time investment pays off and you become more proficient, faster and a better cook in general.

There’s an ocean between fraudulent chargebacks eg canceling or refunding your delivery food after it was delivered and purchases in predatory mobile games that were made without an adult in the loop.

There are just so many reasons for the period trackers to fight any potential data requests they receive and lots of other sources of data that can provide you close enough to the same data.

I do think it is very important to specify because this is being presented as a false choice where the most important thing to do is to stop inputting data to your data into a period tracker app instead of the vast collection of all of your other data eg search and purchases. It is a false dichotomy where one of the few times people are consensually creating data is focused on instead of the vast amount of other data that most people would consider egregious to collect/collate.

I don’t think this is as big of a deal as people are presenting because I think there are already a lot of people who know you are pregnant from your data than period tracking.

This makes me think of the story of Target[1] knowing when people were pregnant. I think there are a lot of other companies that it will come out are figuring out who is pregnant that will demonstrate the depth of surveillance of the surveillance economy.

It is crazy to think that such little progress was made after Snowden that it is not even slightly off to think that even Snowden didn’t depict the true vastness of the power of the NSA.

Maybe but it is probably a good bet that after the drone attacks in Saudi Arabia there will be a lot of growth in drone defense.

Even just the single image of the Mercedes F1 car in front of the plume of smoke from the attack is too great for them to not ramp up defense.

I get your point but at this point there isn’t any place that can constructively hold this conversation. I still this type of conversations can happen but it is difficult because of the inherent biases against and for the people conveying the messages that is going to be much stronger in the cohort that uses HN.

I appreciate wanting proper discussion but if you genuinely thought that any comment section discussing Elon Musk was going to be productive I would like to ask for a counter example where one has occurred. It would be very instructive in many ways on how to build such a community and platform.

I find nowadays most of the US produced content I use also lists weights in grams so no need for conversion.

The first two things I would do is figure out why you have so many feeds and try to stop some of the consumption at the source and also organize the content you do have.

My first tip is to separate content consumption away from your work/daily driver phone. The way I do this is on my phone my open tabs are only new things I want to cook soon and HN. It lets me get just a little bit of content without algorithms addicting me.

Secondly I try to categorize my wishlist as milestones or personal goals. My rationale is if I’m able to achieve x then I can deal with distraction y in my life. It also lets me separate between things I want soon and eventually. I realize sometimes those things are just neat and I don’t want them a month or 6 after I first saw it. This periodically reduces my bookmarks while also being a good barometer of where I’m at in life now.

I guess it probably depends upon ones consumption but this strategy seems outdated because nowadays private trackers/groups eg discords seem to make up a much larger share of piracy etc but I guess that’s more hurting all of the people lower on the hierarchy of content creation than the big record labels.

You say this like they didn’t already have this issue with jailbait half a decade before td. If they had at all come up with a reasonable policy after experiencing many issues before the Donald. Even if you say ok that was only for nsfw reddits they also had to deal with fatpeoplehate.

It is absurd to say that the problem started with robot or mechanically generated content. They haven’t ever been effective or smart in developing content policies that work.

It would be nice if they had a different page where you could see in real time or after you submit a sample of 10 how random their model thought the inputs you were giving were.

After all the scandals that Reddit has had you have to wonder how dangerous an ipo would be. I don’t think it will happen but if someone gets far enough in discovery you gotta imagine there’s some wild shit to be found.

This is an absurd statement. Reddit is by far the most effectively gamed and manipulated social media platform that exists. There’s countless examples of how powerful mods are on Reddit on shaping narratives.
