Finish this in a week, and create open source projects, then get a full-time job.

It doesn't have to be PHP, you can start with Javascript/NodeJS, but definitely learn a database side, server side and client side programming language to create a whole web application by yourself.

Go back to school.

I believe myself this development in APIs is just tip of the iceberg. If the software development goes like this, everything will become huge, and hard to scale, and will need lots of engineering resources.

Apple is developing really slow after Steve Jobs, but if they play their cards smartly they will dominant this Online TV industry with their devices in every people's houses and pockets. They already have the fundamental background as hardware, only thing they need to do is signing contracts with shows and channels.

Lets create an online Javascript bible, not the frameworks like angular, ember, backbone etc... But core javascript, objects, constructor functions, bitwise operators. Everything about Javascript language should be there.

What background do you look for the event? and which language you guys use ? This looks perfect for me who has front-end experience and trying to move on to back-end...

You can easily create a web app with PHP-HTML but your app will never be successful without Javascript! Most of the people was not aware of its awesomeness until few years ago, now there are millions of frameworks, scripts, server side, back-end,front-end all kind of things created in Javascript. I think its the language of tomorrow.

About me:

I have a B.Sc. degree with a major in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Istanbul/Turkey and currently studying my MS degree in IT Management in Golden Gate University. I am an International Student, my school provides both CPT and OPT. I did plenty of elective and required credits in programming, mathematics, statistics. I created one Android Application for just learning. I also create every week new Front-end project and put it into github. Still learning and taking online courses on Algorithms & Data Structures and want to pursue to back-end also. I wrote a thesis about Online Courseware Platform (MOOC) and developed a MOOC web platform at the end of my undergraduate degree and now developing and improving the project. I want to start as a Front End Intern or Part Time developer may be in time I can shift into Back End World. I have the Algorithm Background but at the time I want to work with amazing JavaScript language and see what I can accomplish.

You could think this is real simple, but I would like to say do something about Online Education! Courseware system, book sharing, student social media with profiles integrated with classes and courses. That is perfect fit for both Web and Mobile app I think.

Why don't you take your time doing outside backend projects ? Spend less time for the company you are working and more time for your own backend enjoyable projects. It's not like they fire you at the point, just take things slowly at work and try to focus your own projects which you enjoy.

I would go for the 4th one. I am 25 years old in a 3rd world country working as front-end developer, and I would give everything just to be in your place. Life is short you can always work at some places, I think you should go for it. Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

if you are quick enough to write whole application in shell as in php or python then I think yes there is no problem.
