I think there's a much simpler and less juicy angle here: someone posted a screenshot of an internal communication, and it got removed. It's not surprising or controversial that Twitter would try to contain a leak of its own internal comms (a screenshot of their slack). This isn't "Twitter took down a disparaging post about Twitter", it's that they tried to stop the sharing of internal data.

That being said, I don't disagree with the sentiment here in the sibling comments, this just isn't the steelman you're looking for.

I challenge the assertion that the gp is really antidogmatic. The definition of abuse and the appropriate response to it, while generally unquestioned in one society, may not be the same in a remote island society.

But if they are abusing other people, you'd care, and intervention would be justified? Is that not imposing your dogma on them?

The most ridiculous example of this is Tesla's offering of in-app Autopilot upgrades. At $10k, imagine what Apple's cut is, for absolutely no value added.

I have a problem with his assertion that Tesla will be the first company to market with a significant "autopilot". You can go out today and buy a car from Honda that will autonomously turn the steering wheel to stay within lanes and adjust the throttle/brake to maintain speeds in traffic. If I read the (marketing) details correctly, it sounds to me like you could turn the system on in LA and not touch the wheel/brake/throttle until you have to exit I-5 or run out of gas. If that's not a significant advance in autopilot technology, I wonder what Musk is cooking.

A damning allegation with global economic consequences is easily dismissed as propaganda if it comes from the Chinese government. Not so if it comes from a whistleblower.

if you've never bought anything from target, then you're definitely not in the set of "right people" for this program. it goes without saying that the key to success here is logistical optimization, and big-box stores are the easiest place to start.

Of course this will start a new debate about how it's only a surplus because of previous budget cuts, but that's for another time and place. Still others will crunch the numbers differently and say there was actually a deficit. Politics is fun.

No government pleases everyone and no government is perfect. However, from someone who has been a citizen of both Austin, San Francisco, and other cities, Texas/Austin, despite some shortcomings, is to me clearly the less dysfunctional government. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has been citizens of both cities and honestly thinks otherwise.

I'm not saying Austin is better than San Francisco or anything super subjective like that, but only the mildly subjective assertion that the government is less dysfunctional in Austin, compared to SF.

Do you know why? Is there just too many sprites for a modern browser to handle?

That's my thinking. Not to belittle the accomplishment here, but I would bet the hardest part is the art and design - something easy to 'borrow' from an existing game. I hope he is using the C&C art as a placeholder until he can master the engineering aspect of this, and then invest in original art/design once he's got the foundation down. I'd like to support a game like this.

I've always wondered when we'd get a browser based RTS that doesn't require some silly plugin. (maybe one exists?) This is a nice start, but will probably get shot down as soon as it becomes noticed by the powers that be at EA (or whoever owns the copyright)

assuming their servers can even handle the load. seems like it takes 30+ mins to sell out (what normally would have sold out in 2) since they can't seem to figure out the scaling problem.

I was kind of hoping craigslist was cooking up something awesome, and waiting for the product to be fully polished and "magical, revolutionary" before launching it. unfortunately, this just feels like they rushed out of the door with the first thing they could mash up. specifically, two shortcomings: 1. as far as i can tell, it doesn't show you what listings you've already clicked on, unlike every map based apartment search out there 2. it doesn't appear to be loading the data as you scroll around the map - it loads it all at once up front. of course it's nice that you don't have to wait for it to load as you scroll, but that means there's an upper bound to the number of listings you can search through, and just goes to show how incomplete their implementation is. i'm guessing that's why it isn't offered in NY yet - too many listings to serve all at once

A tip for anyone trying to view this on a smartphone:

If I load the page on my Android phone with the stock gingerbread browser in portrait, I get what I can only guess is the desktop page. If I load it in landscape, I get the tablet page asking me to rotate to landscape. If you then rotate back to portrait and refresh, you may be lucky enough to get the mobile phone page. It may also be completely random.

Ironic how difficult it is to load this content on a mobile device.

Wanting to prevent campaigns that will end in failure due to "stupidity", or even people who "got in over their heads" is just as valid as wanting to prevent fraud. Kickstarter's image/brand will be hurt by poorly executed campaigns that fail for whatever reason, so it's in their best interest to keep those to a minimum.

i think the core of the problem is that the author is extrapolating an anecdote and criticism about Scientology and applying it to "Religion". Without knowing (and without being given) much context of this quote, the title and commentary appear to be purporting a claim that is not supported by the quote.

i think he means to say the last paragraph contradicts the first:

if horses and pigs are a-ok without it, then the assertion that in its absence we would have no chance of existence seems a bit odd

i'd predict this will never be reverted. it's another example of google's infallible design principles being bestowed upon the people.

my favorite justification of removing the plus sign is that "it's too jarring".

Not a very useful statistic considering they must process thousands of transfers a day due to regular business activity. A better stat might be % increase or at least the number of transfers above the average. Admittedly, that would make for a far less catchy blog post.

it's just another form of marketing. spending resources on marketing is a valid approach when you need to stand out from your competitors.

with this new campaign, they're likely to get an infusion of customers and cash, which will in turn be more beneficial to their product than the 30 minutes it must have taken them to set up the mud slinging website.

i can think of a few trolls who would love to snatch up that patent and sue everyone who ever had anything to do with a smartphone.
