HN is very easy to shill vote up on own posts though, and I suggest thats what is happening here. A large part of its quality came from its obscurity.

Although many content pieces on the internet are provided completely free, some of the content producers make a living from the advertising revenue their work provides. Without that revenue, they would stop producing their interesting articles.

Buyers should note these are cheap because they're going to be tracking your every move. Every site you visit and everything you type will be logged using the autocomplete function as it already is within Chrome.

On a side note, why has no serious competitor to Skype appeared? Given the maturity of the tech involved (its just VOIP) and the size of the pie, i'd have thought there would be more competition for a slice.

For those interested in Bitcoin right now (mostly geeks) i'd say the % of jailbroken iDevices is much higher, i'd throw 80% out as a guess.

Although this sounds like great news, I'd suggest it's not. Reasons being, yes it brings energy to government, but also inexperience. Further, it shows the ridiculousness of "elected representatives" when no one has heard of them (they're elected because their party is wanted in government, not because of their particular talents in politics as individuals) and as one commentator says, the representative didn't even turn up at their own celebration. Democracy in it's current form in Canada is a joke.

What you are seeing is minimum wage laws in action. They drive up unemployment during difficult times (recession) and should be lowered according to economic theory. But they aren't as its a sign of weakness. If the minimum wage was $2 an hour say, a vast number of currently unemployed workers would quickly find themselves with work to earn honest money, delivering you delicious home cooked meals.

This information would be much more valuble with data for a "normal" day. For example, Is the main bump around noon just a regular lunch high?

Sorry, I meant the email functionality is 1 step and trivial, since they already have an inbox system in place. The search would be much more difficult to do well of course, but i'd suggest a recommendation based search (like Google +1) could be up and running within a year quite easily given their resources.

I've found the opposite case when advertising my app on both networks. Conversions were about the same, but cost per click was about 4x on google. Its a $4.99 one off payment app, so its possible different revenue models find one or the other better for their use.

Also, I will add, nearly every article you read on Hacker news is a blog post on the submittors own blog. Is their something wrong with doing this?

How much of Google's revenue do you expect to be generated from Android OS? Further, Facebook apps are on apple and android products, giving them a larger market share than android alone could ever have. The OS alone will not be generating revenue.
