Does anyone have any suggestions on starting a career in manufacturing/quality, etc. Not exactly sure which direction I want to go but I want to explore careers that involve lean principles and Six Sigma. Currently just have an associates. Should I start entry level somewhere? Go back to school for Industrial Engineering?

Abstract

Bariatric surgery is now widely reported to ameliorate or resolve type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. Some clinical investigators even suggest its use as an early therapeutic intervention for type 2 diabetes in patients not meeting standard criteria for bariatric surgery. However, little is known about the exact mechanisms explaining the metabolic consequences, and much active investigation is underway to identify hormonal changes leading to diabetes resolution. This review includes a detailed description of various bariatric surgical procedures, including the latest less-invasive techniques, and a summary of current data providing insight into the short- and long-term metabolic effects. We outline current hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which these surgical procedures affect diabetes and report on morbidity and mortality. Finally, we discuss the available data on bariatric surgery in adolescent patients, including special considerations in this potentially vulnerable population.

Abstract

Bariatric surgery for obesity has proved to be an extremely effective method of promoting long-term weight reduction with additional beneficial metabolic effects, such as improved glucose tolerance and remission of type 2 diabetes. A range of bariatric procedures are in common use, including gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Although the mechanisms underlying the efficacy of bariatric surgery are unclear, gastrointestinal and pancreatic peptides are thought to play an important role. The aim of this review is to summarise the effects of different bariatric surgery procedures upon gastrointestinal and pancreatic peptides, including ghrelin, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK), glucose-dependent insulinotropic hormone (GIP), glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), peptide YY (PYY), oxyntomodulin, insulin, glucagon and somatostatin.

I am certainly not saying steak isn't more filling but just a random anecdote. As a dieted down currently lean person I ate 4000-6000 calories (all weighed to the gram) of steak/ground beef a day for a month no problem. This was sufficient to gain a substantial amount of weight in that time. But figured id try the meat only thing being talked about in the last year on myself.

I think an interesting direction to take reading up on the subject is instead of it being the spread of sugar look into the spread of industrial seed oils and how much their intake has increased.

Wow it really is great. Plan to share with everyone I know who would find this interesting. Already watched a few of them and they are all just as enjoyable. Hope he gets a bunch more subs and keeps making videos.

I am certainly not suggesting it's the right answer but in threads like these rarely do I see industrial seed oils with high omega-6 polyunsaturated fat content being suggested as a culprit. The use in food correlates as well as anything else that is being suggested with the rise in obesity rates and metabolic conditions.

Absolutely agree. A few podcasts I listen to that I would consider very high production quality I can easily do 2x and some of the more casual content ones I have pushed to 3x. However, some of the fringe, sounding like they are recorded on a phone become difficult to understand even at 1.5x.

My personal experience is very similar and you described it in a way better than I could. And then add on to that the requirement to do that day in and day out for the rest of your life.

I know everyone says it's good, etc. I just want to reinforce the point. It is really really good. Definitely one of the best scifi I have read. The story just gets bigger and bigger as the books progress as well as the imagined tech and physics. I know it's cliche but it definitely caused me to think slightly differently when looking up at a night sky.

Personally these type of games have lately revived my identity as a gamer.

Soma, Talos Principle, The Valley, Kona, Firewatch, To the Moon, Everybody Has Gone to the Rapture. Have all been extremely enjoyable experiences.

Really hoping for more to discover in this genre.

Abstract

Western lifestyles differ markedly from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and these differences in diet and activity level are often implicated in the global obesity pandemic. However, few physiological data for hunter-gatherer populations are available to test these models of obesity. In this study, we used the doubly-labeled water method to measure total daily energy expenditure (kCal/day) in Hadza hunter-gatherers to test whether foragers expend more energy each day than their Western counterparts. As expected, physical activity level, PAL, was greater among Hadza foragers than among Westerners. Nonetheless, average daily energy expenditure of traditional Hadza foragers was no different than that of Westerners after controlling for body size. The metabolic cost of walking (kcal kg−1 m−1) and resting (kcal kg−1 s−1) were also similar among Hadza and Western groups. The similarity in metabolic rates across a broad range of cultures challenges current models of obesity suggesting that Western lifestyles lead to decreased energy expenditure. We hypothesize that human daily energy expenditure may be an evolved physiological trait largely independent of cultural differences.
