We are expanding our Security team with two software engineers to help cover a wide array of needs: building security services, helping other teams assess the security of their own work, running pentests and tabletops, teaching security classes, and working with auditors to prove we do all the above. It's still popular in certain corporate settings, where you're dealing with workflows that don't have easy support for FIDO2. For example, certain embedded browsers for logging in to VPNs.

I'm surprised no one has said "PowerPoint" yet. LibreOffice and Google Slides are nowhere close. Animations, theming, diagramming tools... I run an Ubuntu laptop and have been missing PowerPoint so much I tried to get a Windows VM for it. Couldn't get graphics support in VirtualBox working correctly :(

I tried finding some online but it looks like we haven't published any. I'll need to get permission; our customer base cares very much about facility security. Let me see what I can rustle up.

I work for Viasat; all of our new-build offices in the past few years have been designed around what we call the neighborhood concept. A neighborhood is a set of individual offices (maybe 60sqft-ish?) with three solid walls, and one glass/wood wall with a sliding door. All the offices open into a central room that can be outfitted in a bunch of different ways. There are neighborhoods of different sizes, and basically, each team gets a neighborhood to themselves. The whole concept was developed through a series of experiments that took several years.

Some teams make use of the space better than others, of course, but for my group it's been a huge boon to our collaborative culture. The offices are well-insulated, so you don't need headphones to achieve quiet, but if you want to, you can leave your door open and hear what your teammates are discussing at any time.

Over time we're upgrading our older facilities to the same model, but in general there are few open-plan offices or cube farms in the company, and I highly doubt we're going to build more. Many years ago, our founders made it a company priority to give folks a door they can close, to get away from "it all" and focus.

Until recently, I volunteered as a coach for my local school district's Science Olympiad, in the middle school division. My first year they asked me to work with one of the aviation events. I'd never really had an interest in flight, and certainly not to the extent that I could teach others about it.

First lesson: middle schoolers (think 11 - 14 years old) will test your patience in new and completely unimagined ways, if you don't have kids of your own. They will also surprise you in a bunch of wonderful ways too. I had to learn how to corral their attention, navigate their relationships with each other, and motivate them to actually get stuff done. Turns out it was great training for being a supervisor later on :)

Second lesson: I had to learn about flight, more than I'd ever before, and figure out how to teach it. I don't think I did this very well, to be honest, but five years after graduating school it was nice to teach myself something that wasn't tech-related.

Final lesson: I had to learn to accept there were things I could not fix. As an engineer and inveterate tinkerer, this is hard for me to come to terms with. Even in the affluent area I lived in, and with kids who had all volunteered for this after-school activity, we had kids with serious home issues, kids whose friends were dealing with hard personal problems, and at least one violent outburst. I saw the kids for ninety minutes a week; the best I could do was make a welcoming and safe environment for them. That has never really sat well with me.

My job changed, and now I travel too much to coach anymore. It's my biggest regret about the change. I miss working with those kids.

I work for a small satellite ISP, ViaSat (d/b/a Exede). Part of my job is data security specifically for this type of information. We've had it in our privacy policy since Day 1 back in 2012 that we don't give or sell this data to anyone who doesn't actually need it, and certainly not to advertisers. One of the things that makes me proud to work here.

ViaSat has many businesses, but our largest is our satellite ISP, which provides Internet access to homes, business, and airplanes (JetBlue, United, Virgin). We're making the shift to cloud infrastructure in a big way, and are looking for people to help our Cloud Engineering team fulfill our dual purpose: first, to work alongside product and service teams to help them adopt cloud technologies; and second, to build and operate platform services that all our partner teams want, but can't do themselves (LDAP, DNS, CA, logging, etc). The job is a combination of software development, education, security engineering, and operations.

* software engineers with EE/CS degrees or equivalent experience

* handy with multiple languages, since we need to work in the stacks our partners use
