It’s frankly embarrassing at this point. I’ve got free access through buying a Pixel phone and it’s not even worth using as it’s a waste of my time. Here’s my experience so far using it for basic sysadmin Linux type stuff.

Gemini 3.1 Pro just feels a generation behind, from when models would miss easy things and make bad assumptions. Its not actively detrimental in bad way but the opportunity cost vs using something like Opus to be productive is large.

Gemini 3.5 Flash is the most annoying model I have ever used. It loves to respond in ALL CAPS like “LOOK AT THAT” for no apparent reason. I realize it’s a flash model but I will give it a basic list of tasks and the output will simply vomit “Now I will X” “Now I will Y” “Now I will Z” over and over again filling my screen with garbage. It’s also no smarter than 3.1 Pro and consumes just as many tokens as 3.1 Pro, it’s really pointless without a newer Pro model in place.

This is a great new development, llama.cpp is the ffmpeg of the AI world. The vast majority of "Local AI" tools just take it and put a front end on, delivering little value. Bringing users close to the core project is a big win for everyone.

Props to the author for putting in what looks like ton of work trying to navigate this issue, shame they have to go to these lengths to even have their case considered.

The jump from 10 to 20$ a year*(correction) is fine? I’m happy to pay for a quality service I use daily, and price increases are inevitable. Zero issues on my end.

I don't doubt it, but what were they all doing? The Metaverse had 10k employees on it for multiple years and seemed to almost be a standstill for long periods of time. What do these massive teams do all day?

Everyone is missing the why here, this only happens because the whole stack is vertically integrated. Even if say LG wanted to make a box like this and update it for 10 years they couldn’t, they don’t make the chips. Qualcomm straight up refuses to support chips through this many Android releases. Even if device manufacturers want to support devices forever it won’t matter if the actual SoC platform drops support.

I've only used it when I'm in a pinch but it's handy. Blowing up mobile apps to a larger screen and multitasking isn't ideal certainly but I've been able to handle "email job" type activities while out of pocket. That said I've never heard of anyone else who's actually used it.

The RK3568 is an interesting choice, why no the H700 or something with a good amount of mainline kernel support already?

There's a scrapyard right by my hometown with a fancy billboard, like the ones for the lottery that have the number displays. It's just for showing copper prices, bright copper, copper #1 and copper #2. There's so much money in it they can afford to advertise now.

It’s incredible how bad driver support is the ARM space. I was looking into some of the various Ambernic handhelds and their Linux firmware. Despite their SoCs being advertised as having Vulkan 1.1 support every firmware for the device ships with it disabled.

At what point will the massive investments into AI show a respectable return? With the literal Trillion dollars OpenAI is constantly trying to raise what type of revenue would make that type of investment make sense? Even if you're incredibly bullish I don't know how you make that math work anymore.

Housing doesn’t benefit the local community(from most NIMBY perspectives). It makes housing more affordable lowering their property values, creates the need for more infrastructure and creates change in their environment.

The motto seems to be, “Neighborhoods full, I like things the way they are. No more change please.” Doesn’t matter if it’s a data center, housing, or any type of development.

“Local opposition” and NIMBYism is the primary reason we have a housing shortage, it’s a rampant problem across the US. The few grumpy old folks that show up to local planning meetings shouldn’t hold us back as a nation. Until we can find a way to get over that hump I’m not sure how we'll move forward in many aspects.

I agree entirely with this sentiment. It almost feels like it's our ages "Keeping up with the Joneses". Even if 30-50% of your social circle can afford it without incurring debt if it becomes the social norm we'll all keep doing it. It's unfortunate but I don't know how this generation learns this lesson.

What's the argument for stock buyback programs generally? We have more cash than we know how to spend reasonably?

As I understand it’s very unlikely to happen anytime soon as the M1/2 GPUs are very similar but M3 has a completely new architecture. With their reduced staff and the GPU in the M1/2 being notoriously simple in retrospect we’re probably years away.

Every Nvidia card has CUDA support from day one, regardless of who the market is for it. I wouldn't much as much if all their slides weren't covered in AI, AI, AI, and it didn't ship with some stupid LLM chatbot to help you tune your GPU.

No ROCm at launch? After they delayed it for months? What a joke. That's like not having CUDA available at launch.

The million handhelds running Linux on Aliexpress are incredible if you think about the easy amount of available compute. I just can’t get over the software situation enough to take it seriously. They’re all based on ARM SBCs which have frankly archaic software support. I’m not sure it’ll ever get better, as there seems to be little incentive to get these platforms working on anything like modern Linux.

Apple has a reserved billboard right across the street from my apartment. Every time it changes I notice, Privacy ad, Sexy product photos, Shot on IPhone ads. Guess what it is now? AI Emoji, a hot dog holding a briefcase. I’m not surprised people aren’t impressed.

I live in Center City Philadelphia and we have many similar issues with public transit and transportation. I think it will be very interesting to see how the next few years play out both in NYC and here.

I'm all for adding additional support programs for those that need help(and pay taxes to support it) but that's never been popular or successful enough to make an impact. We need more housing, increases to the minimum wage, and many other changes to help support those in need after they immediately get help(which is still hard to come by). These are long term changes that can't get a "quick fix". Meanwhile faith in our public transit institutions continues to degrade as they are ill equipped or unwilling to help enforce order in a way that makes the majority feel safe.

Last year Philly elected a mayor who promised to restore order, potentially bring back stop and frisk and make changes in policing to make the city safe. I hope order and safety do return, but I feel many will be uncomfortable with the level of compassion given to get to that level of safety.

Exactly, which is why if this gets any traction I believe it'll be removed. Apple does not allow you to consume your own content on their platforms without a tax or at least a little roughing up.

How’d this get past app review? Apple has allowed zero emulators of any type on the App Store. I bet this gets crushed.

My guess is they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. Seems like the products they sell would be very useful to said companies. Wouldn't want to air any of their dirty laundry, it's PR not a reporting/review perspective.

100% this, Apple wants complete control over the distribution and tooling used on their platforms. While it does provide advantages for their hardware development I think it just ties back to them wanting 30% of any application or gaming revenue.

Most of these are solved problems on the "server" end, but make sure however you play your content is beefy enough.

Can't speak for Jellyfin, but Plex effectively can't "Cast" in a meaningful way. Invest in an Apple TV and it can play every media format, quality, etc. Trying to cheap out using an old smart TV app or a fire stick and you'll end up in transcoding hell.
