I keep everything. Usually I use it so long it's not worth selling it anymore anyway. The problem is even old tablets are often too slow to use for something as simple as home automation control because home assistant uses so much JavaScript

By the way the diode option is a decent one too, I went for this option because I had many 12V PSUs around, and due to the efficiency of the converter I can use ones with pretty low amperage. But if you have a decent 5V supply using a simple diode drop is not a bad option.

It's not really. I've had a test bench with smartphones at work with open smartphone test farm and about 50% of them cracked their cases open after a year or two. It is not a joke. It really happens. None of them actually got to the point of exploding but it didn't exactly look "safe". Of course I replaced them when this happened. Sometimes it took a while because they were on a stand, we only controlled them remotely so it would take me cleaning the stand or something to notice something was off.

Still, it served our support team really well during the pandemic. They could test wifi setups at the office with different android versions even when they were in a country that was on lockdown themselves.

Yes that's what I do too! I didn't know that blogpost but I generally replace the battery with a DC-DC converter module from Ali. You can even tune the voltage and see the indicator change the battery charge level. I put them around 4 volt. The advantage of these modules is also that you don't need a beefy 5V power supply, you can simply grab a 12V or so (I have a full drawer of those from shucking external hard drives) and it will regulate it down nicely. They are 80 cents a piece (10 for 8 euro): https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005007508685885.html and they can deliver up to 3A or so which is enough to handle the peaks. They're a bit bulky but I just tend to mount them elsewhere. Make sure you use a fairly thick cable to the phone then to minimise losses at that low voltage.

I didn't have to bother with the thermistor but some models need it yes. And some even have an i2c charge level module which is even harder to simulate though it can be done.

It is very good except the UI could really use some love IMO. I use it on all my kindles but it really took some doing to get there in terms of getting comfortable with using it.

For me a phone is really an outside the house thing only. I don't use it at home to poke around on the internet etc, like most people do these days. I still have a real computer with a massive screen and keyboard. So a mini size is great for me.

On Android there's the ones from Unihertz but they take the "small" factor a little bit too far, and also their software support is absolutely terrible. And people often mention the zenPhone, I'm not sure why because it was never smaller than the Samsung S-series. It wasn't really a small phone anyway.

Good question. I think it's because I just rolled into it. It was not really a conscious decision and after a while I got used to its quirks. And it got significantly better over time too of course.

Though I feel that especially in the latest decade Google was a terrible source for finding things like the best product for usecase xyz and other recommendations. Because not only was the internet full of SEO clickbait fake comparison sites, but Google promoted the fake ones because they paid for it. They deeply undermined their own credibility. It was pretty much impossible to find real info with all the fake clickbait stuff around. Not to mention that even legit news outlets do a lot of paid "advertorials" these days.

Especially the fruity era that brought apple back from the brink was not Rams inspired at all. And it was pretty genius. I still see his work from that time as a retro icon in hipster coffee shops. I owned a blue iBook from that time and it was really comfortable to work on due to its smooth edges (though carrying it by its handle had a bit too much of a handbag look)

One thing I do criticise him for is that he's always been form over function. The puck mouse is one good example from that era, anyone who has used it will understand that round is not a good shape for a mouse.

Ehh my ISP at home is still ipv4 only. The amount of ipv6 capable connections only just passed 50% worldwide a few months ago.

I don't think ipv6 only is feasible yet unless your audience is exclusively in Asia where ipv6 uptake is much higher due to them running out of ipv4 years ago

It used to be as simple as getting a fixed IP but these days that is indeed a lot harder to get.

One time has to be the first and when you get hacked they're instantly inside your network unless you were smart enough to set up a DMZ or something.

Yeah I think we should also move from giving financial penalties to bad corporate actors, to custodial sentences to their top execs and board members. If their own safety and livelyhood is at stake they will be a lot more careful. If we just fine the company they'll just take it as an extra cost in their business equation.

After all these people often say they deserve the high pay due to the high responsibility they have. But they don't, really. They screw up and they get a golden parachute. I tend to buy handmade pieces that last me for years if you look after them. Made from real materials by craftspeople. I spend 100-200 euro on one but they really stand out between all the cheap shein/temu crap.

It's similar to what I do yes. I buy normal Android devices but I use ADB to get rid of most of the google stuff. In Google Play Services I just don't sign in and I disable all the data collection. It's not ideal but the problem is I really need the push service for work. And my devices are not supported by AOSP distros.

I install my apps using Aurora and F-Droid.

ewaste in general is a problem. And the issue is exactly that. "It's only tiny bits so who cares". All these tiny bits add up.

I understand, I just wonder why they do this. Why lock their stuff down so much? Especially if they offer other channels that don't have this limitation.
