I don't think people would prosper under such a system. Free health care, yes, free education, yes. Retirement for all, take care of the disabled, yes.

But in my opinion, in today's society, if you take away the need for people to struggle (which UBI will do) they often end up in a worse mental and physical shape than if you make them suffer a bit. Just the way natural selection programmed us. "All basic needs are met <- conserve energy".

I can imagine a educational system where we prepare our children from childhood for UBI and it will work.

But given how rudimentary most education still is I don't see that happen anytime soon. Maybe in 100 years.

The way I see it, we already have that world, with capitalism functioning as a filter.

I worked my ass off to reach financial independence, now I'm dedicating the rest of my life towards helping other people.

I've proven to be capable of using the system to a degree where I can do whatever I want, which allows me the freedom to help other people full time.

It's not a perfect system, but I doubt UBI will be much better. At least capitalism filters out many of the people who shouldn't be helping others.

Helping those in need isn't something everyone should be doing. Not every needy person should be helped and helping others in desperate need incurs a mental cost that's not easy to carry.

At some point, I tried this as an experiment. Instead of doing things myself, I tried to hire people to do it for me.

I tried a few different things, data labeling, custom sewing work, custom car modifications.

Turns out that the work was either done badly when it came to fairly common tasks or people refused to outright do it when it was custom work. I've seen the same thing when I looked at what happened when friends hired others.

Maybe there's a point where you have enough money to hire highly qualified people. But I doubt it's anywhere below $10M net worth. Below that you're just not likely to start handing out $150 per hour for what I would consider fairly standard yard or other work. At least I'm not.

Or maybe the trick is to hire a supervisor as well. So first you hire someone to do the work and then you hire someone to supervise it. Unless of course the supervisor also does a bad job. But then I can hire a supervisor for the supervisor.

Most likely I just wasn't good enough in the hiring process. So I probably should have hired someone to do the hiring for me. But what if I hired the wrong person, because I'm not good at hiring?

The clones are fine for simple stuff. But they really cut every corner possible, so even the chip is counterfeit, which means it doesn't behave like a real Arduino does. Deep sleep will use 1000x as much current on some clones compared to a real Arduino, for example.

You really can't only use clones. You have to develop/test on real Arduino hardware, then deploy to clones. Because the clones aren't reliable in their behavior.

I looked at their parts list and it's obvious they aren't serious. CPU is missing, memory is missing, SAS to SATA cables, but no SAS controller, no mounting for the system board. Low effort at best.

Do you have any idea how much can go wrong with a human body and in how many different ways? And we're not even close to figuring out all the illnesses. Sure, brain cancer they can detect just fine, but try to go to a doctor because you're fatigued or have joint pain or other inflammation related issues. See the shit show you'll run into then. 9 out of 10 times they'll toss you through a few machines and then claim it's psychological.

Most doctors are just guessing, some are just better at making it appear they know what they are doing to improve placebo. I rather have a doctor that's using Google than one that thinks he knows what's wrong but doesn't fact check.

Harder than you think. It means you need consistent 6% returns (2% inflation, 4% return).

There's nothing out there that I know that gives you a consistent 6% return and the stock market is a fickle mistress. 2007 to 2009, VTI dropped over 50%. That 1% reduction in drawdown isn't going to be of much help much when your $1M turned into $500K, you'll need a job.

But you stopped working for a while, so now your resume makes you less desirable than the competition and exactly when you need more income (at the bottom of the recession) the job market is at its worst. Likely it took you a few years to get that $1M and age discrimination is rampant in IT, further decreasing your odds of finding that job.

I think realistically, you need a significantly lower drawdown, more likely in the order of 2% or less to weather economic downturns. Without subsidized healthcare, that's going to be very hard to do with $1M, but I think it's doable with $2M.

It's called "housing", seems to me that the core functionality is to house, not to gain wealth. We might have comingled it with investing, but there's no need for that.

Also housing can't rise faster in value than inflation long term. It can for a while but eventually it'll reach a point where even with a 30 year loan you can't purchase it with any job in the area where the house is located.

So if housing is fundamentally unsuited for gaining wealth in the long term for anyone but the wealthy and if it's core function is to house people, then I don't see a need for housing cost to appreciate above inflation.

Don't have to cancel it... All that debt is in US dollars. Just print so much money that you have 20% inflation per year for four or five years. Problem will be fixed. It's a scam you can only pull off once (after that the dollar isn't going to be the world reserve currency anymore), but it's a scam you can pull off once.

I wish. But the reality is that if that regulation comes, it's going to be state regulation and not federal, so the effect would take years to unfold and be state by state and never reach 100%.

All those drivers would just start the next day driving for Lyft etc. Most drivers already drive for multiple platforms, so it would be a mostly seamless switch. Just losing one platform in the gig economy doesn't remove either the customer demand or the drivers.

I understand that, but China is still industrializing and has an enormous abundance of labor. They have over 425 million farmers (and a decade ago, that number was 700 million). At achievable efficiency, that could easily be done by as few as 50 to 100 million, but then there just wouldn't be any available jobs for the other 300+ million people. China is already using workers in massive unneeded building projects and has an army of over 2 million soldiers and who knows what else, just to keep the unemployment down.

A higher produce efficiency is not only not needed, it is unwanted. Full labor market participation is of much more value to the Chinese right now than the efficiency of the produce industry.

I don't think that calories production per unit of labour is a big concern when you don't export produce and you've got access to so much labor and a socialist economy where food prices are fixed and jobs are all but guaranteed.

The Dutch have a stronger focus on produce export and a higher income per capita, so they have to be a lot more efficient in order to be competitive in the global economy.
