Actually, I want to amend that a little bit. Rocket city, spaceport, JPL, etc., I feel space travel is on the same precipice that tcp/ip and compuserve were in the 80's. The next 20 years will be fun.

There must not be much going on in the world right now. So many headlines have similar grandiose statements recently. The valley is not dead. There are future disruptive companies being ran by two guys in a garage all over silicon valley. Sadly, you have to have the foresight to wait five years while they build momentum. There's never not a next big thing.

I grew up in Cape Canaveral and this was awesome to me! We have to work on the naming though. Star Wars deserves some love!

I have been around the block using these! Springpad, remember the milk, wunderlust, evernote, onenote, outlook tasks, I could go on and on.

i. I carry around a real notepad for quick notes. I fill up about 1 every 6 months, sometimes I take quick notes on iOS Notes app. ii. Short term TODO's I email to myself and flag important. iii. Daily stuff goes in Notepad or Sticky notes on my desktop, open all day, synced in dropbox. iv. Long term stuff goes in Google Tasks under different categories, and relevant web links to those goes in it's corresponding folder in chrome, synced across browsers.

There are other email clients? LOL. (I use the web interface through chrome on ios and osx)

I don't know a single Cs Graduate at my state school with those kind of credentials. My questions is who _wouldn't_ hire him, lol.

I'm working on #5 as well. Including videos and tools. People simply don't know enough about this. But others are right, it's being done on blogs a lot - the catch is doing it with interaction. I think that will break the mold.

I'm also doing #5 with college financial aid, tuition, etc. People don't know enough about this when entering. It took me years, but I know some amazing tricks now. Time to share.

Wow, two hackers in one thread looking for a business guy?

I have 40+ business ideas - some well fleshed out and others just a couple lines from a notebook - but I have no one to execute them. Between school and work I haven't had time to translate my basic knowledge of data structures into something like rails and python. And to be honest, I don't enjoy building as much as I should to be able to code them on my own.

However I do have a BS with a focus on business and basically a minor in EECS.

I pretty much figured I was SOL at finding a tech co-founder.

At this point I'm convinced that it's going to require new regulations to make this happen. The information is not required to be kept open and available on a large scale. There are no repercussions for having an out of date floorplan with the building commission. Neither owners nor brokers have any incentive to put this information online during vacancy because it creates unnecessary work in a market where an opening sells itself. And when that vacancy is filled they have no incentive because they have better things to do.

If you could somehow incentivise tenants, owners, or brokers to update this information when they move in or just before they move out then you could solve this. But I don't think that's going to happen without deep pockets lobbying an addon bill in washington.

I've been wanting to shoot a film about this for some time.

hacker news has had several discussions stating 'if you can fizzbuzz you can get an entry level coding job' so I thought it would be useful. I have a couple semesters of programming and can answer most questions up through year two because of continued studies on my own after I changed majors. However I haven't had any real software development experience. (I'm a new grad.)

I'm applying for jobs in a few areas:

Systems/Network Administration

User Experience Design

Business Analyst or entry lvl at some software dev places

Social Media Management / Communications & Web Design

I'd go on to say that the energy coefficient between 35 Deg N and 55 Deg N probably isn't enough to offset the equation significantly.

I've had two types of free prime memberships for two years now and I buy tiny things like a $1.55 audio cable or a $1.99 grill lighter every week (sometimes every day.)

Ups actually offers insane bulk shipping discounts with huge retailers like amazon and newegg. The amount basically ends up looking like a quarterly fee on the balance sheets.

Then amazon uses fixed shipping costs for all their 'amazon fulfilled' items with few maxing out the base cost, this means that they may net anywhere from 0% to 90% profit on their shipping of each item depending on where it's going.

I'm fairly sure that at the $79 price point was chosen so that if every single customer switched to prime, they would still run a positive balance on shipping.

No I agree. Came from c++ that I haven't done in 4 years and I'm blowing through this. Definitely need something more comprehensive.

I have the opposite problem. I'm an entrepreneur first, and a developer fifth ;) But getting dev's to see their own potential as a partner is like pulling teeth.

Thanks for the advice, I've several small projects I think I could start out with. Django definitely looks like a good next step.

A good resource might be the the wakemate blog or contacting on of their employees. I think they went from prototype to design with a similar product to the fitbit. They wrote about sourcing Chinese manufacturers and a whole lot more. I'm curious what others in this field have to say though.

Hopefully they'll leave in the ability to just type in your boolean search. I prefer that method as well and send myself a lot of email so I'm often searching for stuff like [from:me has:attachment]

This might sound crazy but could you come up with a way to ask for the money on kickstarter.com and repay everyone with interest as soon as you get the allowance? I'm not sure how your allowance works or how fast the turn around but you would only need 500 people to spare 20 bucks.

Nope. This is good advice. Although some have become aware of this in the last year or so and started cracking down in it requiring verification after approval. I learned everything about this from reading the forums at http://www.creditboards.com

Also don't try to go to a CC to save money first unless you know for a fact that you want to want to transfer to schools they articulate with. Many of the schools with the best CS programs take a ridiculously small percent of transfers.

Are you on the East coast? How were your sat/act scores? I would try CMU, Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Tech, NC Chapel Hill, & maybe Berkeley if you're willing to move that far.

Remember as a nontraditional student you will get increased financial aid availability for housing and other expenses that someone under 23 doesn't get.

Also note that if you can get into a private school, they usually have incredibly high grant offerings. The hard part isn't paying for private, it's getting in.

Lastly, your financial aid works of the previous tax year. While in school I was able to keep my income below 15k / year and got full aid the entire time. If yours is higher, then your expected contribution may match or outweigh the yearly cost of a public school, but you'll still have a shot at very high aid packages at private schools because of the cost difference.

Check financial aid info at http://www.collegeboard.com Your next step, no matter what, is to fill out the fafsa at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov You have to wait for a pin so start right now. Then when you get your pin, it shouldn't take you more than an hour with a W2 to estimate your EFC.

Armed with that information, you can start asking the right questions about cost. And if you decide to wait another year, then all you have to do is update your account instead of redoing the whole thing.

Whatever you do go to a school where everybody is smarter than you. I turned down Georgia Tech for my local state school based on insane OOS tuition and wasn't challenged in the slightest. It was mind numbing.
