Breitbart is a bastion for free-thinking much like HackerNews. While you may criticize their opinions, it's at least sane reporting... instead of cheerleading and narrative controlling like CNN and NBC.
All centralized power structures will transform into threats. The future of information technology will be in decentralization/anonymity... not centralization and always-public models.
Facebook is like the Disney in the tech world. They want to be that trove of intellectual property.
They take free-to-use stuff (Disney is cheap ripoff of Hans Christian Anderson's fables), and create "magical" stuff that they protect with their arsenal of lawyers.
If Facebook is able to pull the wool over our eyes this time... OSS is gonna be in a bad place in the next century just like how Disney single-handedly lobbied to change public domain laws in America.
Google (parent company of YouTube) already sees itself as the protector of the public's eyes and ears. They might be contrite now but they behave as a censorshipping organization.
One of the missing points: convenience. Taking a bus "feels" like less of a hassle. Nobody likes having to deal with authorities (check-in people, the TSA). Taking a bus means you have more control over the terms of your trip.
While raw time-to-destination is important, people are also looking for emotional expenditure savings too.
Don't forget about Google. It's less of a salient problem... but all the data collection is created to be monetized. In a few years, we'll end up seeing really interesting ways that data will be sold (not just for advertisers).
You guys should use the business model that the makers of Sketch use (Bohemian Coding).
You pay a one-time fee $99 to download the app with all available features and new features for one year (365 days). After 365 days, when the Bohemian Coding team builds new features you have to pay $99 again to get those features... etcetera.
It's a great business model because you get the best of both worlds (one-time, and subscription model). This gives you capital to get started, and bootstraps your company as the software matures.
