I even played Strat-o-Matic baseball by mail when I was a kid! We'd fill out our rosters and managerial instructions then mail them off to our opposing team's manager. A week later I'd get the results back in the mail. Hard to believe such a relaxed pace.

I started coding at 22 years old out of college and am now 58. I've resisted the pressures of becoming a manager my entire career and have had no regrets. Recently I turned down yet another manager role for all the reasons you gave and couldn't have been happier. Management at my place understands my career plans and have been accommodating. I plan on retiring in 10 years but know a lot can change between now and then so if my current job becomes unbearable, I'll leave and take on freelance coding projects. I will never become a manager.

I can't stand when someone answers a question on SO by first admitting they know nothing about the subject then take a guess with an answer. Why bother answering if you don't know the subject?

Great advice. Writing integration tests or unit tests around existing functionality is extremely important but unfortunately might not always be feasible given the time, budget, or complexity of the code base. I just completed a new feature for an existing and complex code base but was given the time to write an extensive set of end-to-end integration tests covering most scenarios before starting my coding. This proved invaluable once I started adding my features to give me confidence I wasn't breaking anything and helped find a few existing bugs no one had caught before!

My wife has been diagnosed with Meniere's so I know first hand the problems that go along with it. I hope they can make some advance with these treatments.

One thing I would suggest because it's something we have control over, is to avoid prolonged loud noise as much as you can, e.g., concerts in a small setting. I'm 53 years old and have been listening to loud music my entire life, mostly through headphones, and it's starting to show recently. I certainly didn't help matters by going to an extremely loud concert last year in a small club without earplugs - this surely damaged my hearing even more.

I use MyLifeOrganized for Windows. I'm a big fan of creating hierarchical lists of projects and tasks and this tool allows me to do that.

My organization uses FogBugz to manage our releases, projects, and tasks and I can't say enough great things about that software.

The lite vs. pro version is a great suggestion and I would have purchased a pro version for my daughter immediately to avoid the malware hassles it caused us. Instead she purchased an academic version of Photoshop which was $100 USD or in that ballpark. This is a shame because Paint.net is a great product and I'd like to see it succeed but their business side is poorly executed. I'll need to head over to the PDN forums and express my frustration.

My daughter accidentally downloaded 6 different programs while trying to download Paint.net some which were malware. While I understand these are ads probably out of their control, their website is extremely deceptive in my opinion and should be modified to make the actual Paint.net download more obvious.

I'd like to see better search functionality. It seems I can never find any relevant emails when searching in Thunderbird.

I do and always have - currently have Windows 7 on my desktop, Windows 8 on a new laptop (had to buy Start8 to get the start menu back to avoid that metro crap). I develop websites in .NET (ASP.NET webforms and MVC) for enterprises. While I'm typing this I'm repairing my VS install because the Resharper keyboard mapping isn't working on this Windows 8 laptop for whatever reason. I guess I should be used to this time wasting stuff by now but I'm not...

FeedDemon is my replacement. It's a Windows program, not web based and there is no phone app, but I'm perfectly happy with it so far. It's free now but to be honest I would have paid it.

I'm close to 55 and have no problem reporting to someone much younger and have done this on numerous projects. As long as we have mutual respect there's never a problem as we both have the same goal completing the project successfully. There are a few things though I don't have in common with the younger generation (e.g., video games) but I make up for that with my "in my day" stories about life before the internet.

You have a fantastic app and I use it daily. I would like the ability to email a link to the HN comments page. Right now I'll email myself the external page if I find it interesting but there are sometimes I'd like to receive the HN page. Being able to bookmark or save a HN page would be useful too.

Look at the Corona SDK for developing iOS and Android apps in Lua. This is fantastic tool. A friend has used this to crank out a number of book apps for iOS using this SDK and the Kwiksher add-on. One note, last time I looked this SDK wasn't using the native UI components, maybe that's changed recently.

No commenting but I'm a read-only lurker on my phone so that hasn't bothered me. I'll give your app a try.

I use the HackerNode iPhone app and find it to be a fantastic way to read HN from my phone. Not free though but I would definitely recommend it.

Interestingly, the fiddling by Capitol Records might have contributed to their success early on (when they weren't destroying the intended album track sequence) - for example I prefer the US mono version of I Want To Hold Your Hand over the English version.
