no one is going to be willing to make the massive investments necessary to continue pushing the scale frontier.

that sounds great to me. anything that slows down the pace and gives us a chance to prepare for, at best, massive job displacement, and at worst, robots turning us all into paperclips.

It is more impactful to me to instead think of it like this: Elon Musk's net worth is roughly 1 million times the median American's. So Elon "earned" as much as the combined life savings of a city roughly the size of Houston or Phoenix.

"if he doesn't do it, another engineer will do it. Might as well take the money".

You should introduce your friend to Kant. He’s taken a situational excuse and turned it into a general principle: ‘If someone else would do it anyway, it’s okay for me to do it.’

It's kinda like.. Kant's whole 'thing'.

Maybe some money to be made?

In the same way that there is money to be made by entering a poker tournament, yes.

Doing so disables AI and all the other features and just gets you 10 links like in the old days…

i expect that opt-out to become harder and harder to find on every re-design, until it is gone entirely. that's on like.. page 2 in the playbook for introducing some shitty new thing that is good for shareholders and not users.

A counterpoint:

Working in /plan mode bouncing ideas back and forth with the AI, me catching its wrong assumptions, it filling in knowledge gaps with a clear explanation when needed, is very intellectually stimulating and I think is making me a better engineer. The key for me has been to be socratic with the AI, think through everything it is proposing carefully, and don't get hypnotized by its confidence, perfectly structured arguments, etc.
