Meh, all the whining about this is complete bullshit. If you didn't pay for the product, and instead downloaded the free version, and used it indefinitely, expecting the developer work on it, full time, without compensation, and didn't pay him for his hard work, then you got exactly what you payed for.

You're probably in the minority. My usage of desktop software has been dropping dramatically over the years. I'm basically left with 5 or 6 apps, including a browser, a file picker, a code editor, and a command prompt. The more powerful the web/internet apps become the more the desktop gets sidelined, and any reason to Ubuntu over any other desktop becomes a pretty moot point.

Seriously, what does Yahoo do? I don't know, because I haven't been their website since the 1990's. They obviously don't make software or hardware products, because I don't own any and have never paid for any of their products. I have no use for whatever services they might offer because I've never heard of anyone praising or recommending their services. I honestly would like to know how Yahoo still exists.

I think Marissa Mayer has a much harder task in front of her than she might think. Yahoo really doesn't do anything, or have products. How is she going to improve that which does not exist?

Why after a few years is noone able to build a 10 inch tablet? I honestly don't care how good an Android tablet is, I'm just so accustomed to the iPad form factor that I won't give it up. To get me interested, an Android manufacturer needs to come up with a bezel-less 9" or 10" tablet with more screen real estate than the iPad.

I got the impression that they already know what it's going to cost for the first production run. They showed the parts they're using, they obviously know what their costs are. They'd have to be complete morons to price it at $99 if it might cost more. And I'm sure the retail price would be higher, maybe $150 or more.

I think Ouya makes Nexus Q and every Google TV box completely obsolete. I am convinced that Google simply does not have the insight to make a successful set top box.

I'm absolutely baffled at the HN negativity revolving around this product. If they deliver what they're promising, I think it is going to be a smashing success.

I have had a bunch of a neat, simple console game ideas kicking around for a long time. I want this console to succeed simply so that I have the opportunity to make them a reality. This console does not need PS3-level graphics to succeed. Even if Ouya only matched the graphics performance of a Nintendo N64 I think it could still be a massive success based on the games that will get created for it.

This is almost certainly why they also don't offer smaller paid accounts (like 10-20GB) -- they know users of such tiers will probably keep their accounts maxed out. I know I almost always utilize nearly 100% of my 2GB free account, and I'd probably do the same with 10GB.

A really good example is the iPad 1 is still using an obsolete version of the WebSocket protocol. That means web servers that want to support iPad 1, must run libraries that support an outdated version of the protocol (one that contains security vaulnerabilities). The protocol can never be updated because Apple won't allow new web browsers on the device. It's a two-pronged approach which both forces obsolescense, and forces developers to needlessly add backwards compatibility layers to cover all the bases.

This is many times worse than the nightmare web developers have been facing with IE6, IE7, and IE8 support requirements because in those cases there was always the option of installing another browser, or something like Chrome-frame.

Is Chrome for iOS open source? Would there be a way to add V8 back in and release it on Cydia? That may extend the lifespan of Apple products indefinitely. My iPad 1 is already deemed obsolete by Apple and will never receive another web browser update ever, which is obviously retarded. Apple seriously needs to get that giant stick out of their ass.

Why can't a company worth nearly a billion dollars just go public? There are thousands of public companies worth less than a billion. So why sell your soul to a VC who could push you into a situation that could make you implode, rather than raise money on an open market and give up less control?

I disagree, restricting humans is exactly what needs to happen for personal air travel to ever to be safe. The humans are the rogues, they're ones that are going to cause problems, not follow standard procedures, drink and fly, check their cellphones while flying etc. Imagine how much uncertainty and risk could be eliminated if you know that 100% of the vehicles in the air are all computer controlled, and use a common communication/navigation protocol. It would simplify everything.

Self-flying air vehicles like this are probably easier to implement than cars. For simple reasons, such as there being no obstacles like roads, street lights, pedestrians, and because you have a 3rd dimension there is significantly more space so the vehicles can be more spread out. The trip itinerary is a lot easier because you're essentially going from point A to point B in a straight line. Also, starting from day one, you could mandate that no human is allowed to pilot these types of vehicles, so you wouldn't have a mix of human and computer pilots that you have with cars.

No way. I'd be exceptionally surprised if more than one developer is dedicated to it. All the components inside iGoogle are already supported by their respective teams. News, Calendar, Finance -- in iGoogle these services are accessed by RSS or JSON API's that already exist.

It should theoretically be possible to make iGoogle a 100% client-side one-page app and require zero maintenance, or additional resources.

Because it used to work and Apple broke it (possibly on purpose) and refuses to fix it. That's not the same as it never working in the first place.
