I'm training a latent diffusion model on weather radar data to predict short-term storm behavior. Decent results so far on downscaled data at +30min, training a full-res model at +1h and +2h horizons now. Excited to see how it does!

I can confirm that Volkswagen is borderline incompetent when it comes to software - a few months back, my 2020 Audi A4 (and those of tens to hundreds of others) all started having the same issue, where the infotainment will randomly reboot every 5-30 minutes (taking out nav, the backup camera, and the parking sensors with it, and requiring a PIN to get back into the system).

Despite the problem having the hallmarks of a backend issue (many cars with the same software running into the same issue on the same week), corporate is still insisting that it's a hardware issue and trying to sell us on $5k hardware replacements. I love the car for its build quality, but almost kind of wish I'd gotten a Tesla given how bad VW is at software.

The biggest shock for me moving from Android Auto to Carplay was the complete lack of multi touch support in Apple's offering. Worked perfectly on Android.

I'll echo Lammy here - as long as you know the tides and don't get too close to any wildlife, it's a fairly easy hike. Budget more time than you think you'll need, I was surprised by how slow it was walking down the sand. Windy point is aptly named, so be careful of things flying away.

It's a multi-day backpacking trip, but you can hike further past the lighthouse and down the Lost Coast if you get a permit. They're sold out months in advance, though.

I was wondering if this was about Petrolia based on the title! Anyone into camping should check out the Mattole Campground around that area. It's at the head of the lost coast trail, but there's no permit requirement and it's only a few dollars a night. There's a nice hike down to an abandoned lighthouse with some elephant seals nearby.

An old laptop of mine (a Compaq Presario) had some Aureal A3D demos pre-installed on it. The one I remember the best was a spatial audio thing that let you walk around a forest with beehives everywhere. It was really good.

I'm not sure if this is a feature I got grandfathered into, but I've got WhatsApp set to back my messages up to Google Drive every week. On my Android phone, the setting is in settings -> chats -> chat backup.

Had to reload it a couple times to get it to work - seems like it might be getting hugged to death, and for good reason!

I'd have gone the overly complicated route - throw a relay in there and tie it to something that detects whether or not your phone is connected to your WiFi network. Automatically disable it when you're already home!

If you're in the States and looking for something closer to home, I go on camping trips up in the Adirondacks fairly often. The cell coverage is either nonexistent or voice-only, and it's a beautiful area.

There are a few good backcountry campsites I've found that do have 4G - working remotely out of a tent is definitely an experience.
