I see the horizontal loading, and it is also very slow (30 seconds + in some cases)

I've been an iOS developer for about 5 years, and I do all my UI in code (one exception: the watch app we have is using storyboards). Storyboards are fine but I find them slow once they get to a certain size, which for any non trivial app, I always hit
I try to keep view controllers clean by having view subclasses which manage layout, and I use auto layout as much as possible
Saying that though, its not the standard, and Apple push storyboards more and more every year, so I would guess I'm in the minority
his videos are only blocked until they air on HBO in the US, so in a day or so they should be available in the UK
I can't remember the last time I signed for something. These days (UK / Australia) its annoying when I can't just hold my wallet against the reader and have to enter my PIN
I just bought a 2 bed terrace in zone 4 for 280k, its not cheap but there are some places that are a lot more affordable (especially if you don't mind going south of the river)

There is a third party IDE: AppCode by jetbrains which does most of what you need (and apparently lots of things better than Xcode) but i've never used it for any long periods
Xcode gets a bad rap, but i use it every day and can't remember the last time the current version crashed or did something strange, maybe i'm just used to it by now though
No worries, I understood where you're coming from. I partly agree with you: I switched to git at the command line from tower because I wanted to script some features (and understand the tool better), but having the GUI there made it easier for me to get used to git in the first place. (though admittedly, tower is one of the good GUIs which make it easy to do a simple task, too many of them do the opposite)
I think the point here isn't that command line tools are more powerful in general, its that building a GUI gives that access to more users who aren't as comfortable with the command line.
If you don't like the GUI or want to combine into scripts the command line is always there behind the GUI.

In my experience anything that Xcode promises to just work, just doesn't but yes they have at least improved provisioning.
The original point was that there are steps to go through, and creating a paid developer account is a non trivial step
(ignoring the creating the developer account) - create certificate(s)
- create provisioning profile(s)
- hit refresh in Xcode and hope it pulls in the profiles you want to use (maybe only an issue if you're a member of multiple teams)
- modify build settings
once you've done that its simple but there is definitely a setup overhead with Xcode and devices
most of apples sample code is pretty poor design for large projects, the biggest example I think is core data stack in the app delegate

this probably explains why android would have it but not iOS, originally iOS only had 1 screen size and didn't need it (though it still would have been much better). Now that new screen sizes are being released / rumoured its much more useful
Agreed, I've been using https://github.com/dkduck/FLKAutoLayout to simplify the constraint creation
it works for a lot of cases, e.g. buy a book and get other books recommended, not so well for rarer purchases like laptops or phones.
People outside the US have much less choice (both in services and content)
I've had netflix for about 6 months (using unlock-us to access all regions) and have probably torrented only 10-20 movies in that time (down from a few a week)

Its not exactly an overall architecture post, mainly talking about lighter view controllers but thats probably the biggest issue with iOS
that doesn't mean you couldn't sit the phone on a tripod / stand (I think thats what the above post meant)
Its an interview question, so no-one is expecting you to solve the problem or think of everything in what should be a fairly short time.
What they want to see is how you work: do you ask questions if you don't know something? do you sketch everything out? do you start from model up, or from UI/UX? can you draw from previous experience to improve the design?
After you've done something there would most likely be a discussion about the design, which again is like how you work: how do you handle criticism, how you debate approaches, can you see areas which could be improved on etc
