It's a bit like saying it's okay to sneak into a movie theater because the prices for movie tickets are too high.

It is not just the price, though. In some regions, for some media, the movie theater doesn't exist or the movies are not localized (no subtitles / dubbing).

Nowadays you need several subscriptions to watch all of the content you would normally watch. There are also different tiers now for video quality.

Essentially it is a lot more attractive to go to your local tracker and download the movie / anime / tv-show which will be of better quality and will be localized.

On the other hand, I haven't pirated a single game for over 10 years.

People will continue to consume content. But they aren't going to pay for what feels like a complete ripoff and manage 10+ subscriptions just to do it. If that is the way the industry is going then piracy will simply continue to thrive.

Of course :) It’s interesting to hear the ideas people come up with, but so far no one has demonstrated any practical results that would significantly improve the quality of work in my field. It has, however, increased the amount of slop that I need to deal with on a daily basis. Worse yet, it is not always programming slop :)

In a general context, I agree. When it comes to programming, however, my experience has been different. If this technology were presented more modestly / realistically, it likely wouldn’t have attracted billions of dollars in investment and the hype. I think this is exactly what many sensible people point to when debating whether this is a bubble :)

They can always learn the technology later, when and if it proves itself to be useful :) I personally don't understand the hype, even after using Claude and other AI tools - but perhaps that will change in the future.

Most inverters don't work without grid synchronization. E.g. you lose electricity from your provider and your batteries / stored energy won't work either.

All new projects need to be A++ energy class rated which require you to use renewable energy, which is likely one of the main reasons for these increases.

It'd be cheaper to buy an RTL-SDR and an LTE antenna than this tinySA. I'm not convinced that a layman would have enough practical experience with radio's to detect these signals though. The bands used for IoT aren't exclusively used for IoT either - they'll contain "normal" LTE signals too.

Because there are regulations for the infotainment system as well. For example, you can't watch videos or read SMS/messages. Not to mention that the infotainment system likely has access to the CAN bus, through which you _could_ impact other safety systems.

Why does your car need an internet connection?

There are several reasons to have internet connectivity in a car. For example, you might want to start your car remotely (e.g. winter time and you want to pre-heat it) or you'd like your onboard navigation maps to update automatically, or you'd like the latest traffic reports (if available in your region), yadda yadda.

While there are a lot of people that love Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, there still remains a sizeable group of people that want to have a navigation solution without using their phone, or to be able to enjoy their car without having a smartphone at all.

We really don't and neither do the manufacturers. Unless you want frequent crashes and user-caused engine problems. Programming an Engine Control Unit (ECU) is not trivial.

These backdoors are generally required by law (e.g. Lawful Interception for Cellular Technologies) and are highly standardized. It is very unlikely that Tesla/Apple make backdoors on purpose.

You're part of a small minority of people that want to had old and outdated _infotainment_ systems. The only exception to this is that people want to have climate control knobs and buttons for some features (e.g. heated seats, driving-mode, etc). However, this is not what the article is discussing.

I don't understand the reasoning you are making here. Cars have had advanced safety features like emergency breaking for a long time now (e.g. Toyota Crown Majesta 2003). Furthermore, there are many safety features that are controlled by software (e.g. airbags and seatbelts) that exist in all cars manufactured today.

If you don't turn on the LTE chip, it can take a while to get registered or a network in order to perform an emergency call. If the LTE module is turned on (the same applies for mobile phones) the network operator will know your coarse location because of the LTE specification itself. Furthermore, all communication equipment is legally required to support Lawful Interception; and LTE is no exception to this.

I've been using Apple CarPlay on a car that was manufactured in 2016. There are some occasional issues with the infotainment system, but CarPlay works as well as it did nearly 10 years ago. It is much more likely that CarPlay will continue to function just as well whereas proprietary systems made by car manufacturers are going to start showing their age.

They have a geolocation API that allows searches of locations based on BSSID's and RSSI's and cell towers. It is "public" but you need to pay <y> $ per <x> requests.

This is the same in Europe as well. At least from my experience(-s) of driving in Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland and Germany.

If people, including law enforcement are comfortable with doing 70mph on 65mph roads, why not make the speed limit 70mph

The speed limit is set based on what is considered safe upon collision in a particular area. Furthermore, if you increase the speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph, you'll likely see drivers going at 75 mph.

I visited California once and was going from LAX to Kings Canyon National Park. I was driving the speed limit (I wasn't in any hurry) and got passed by literally everyone on the road. The vast majority of people drive faster than the speed limit. The question is "how much" over the speed limit you can comfortably go before you run the risk of being stopped and fined.

Repeat offenders should choose between not having a license to drive and having a mandatory speed limiter installed in their car. The issue is that it is not trivial to do on all vehicles.
