And now that I think of it. IMAP (more or less) allows you to download your mbox file. Why downloading using HTTP is so much worst (it isn't) than using IMAP?

email was working long before there was IMAP. If you want your "keys", you have to be able to download your mbox file (which is possible in hey).

A file server has nothing to do with syncing across devices. If this was the case, they wouldn't have a x86 Linux client either.

BigStash is based on Glacier, but offers an abstraction layer over the Glacier technical and pricing complications.

We have been working with AWS Glacier for two years now, and we are very well aware of its complicated pricing scheme.

Part of our offering is the abstraction layer over Glacier's pricing. Yes, you may download all your files today. But this will probably be just 0.001% of the total Glacier storage we manage, and as such, it will not cost BigStash as much.

Something you didn't mention, is that there are also bandwidth costs involved. But the way our service is designed is more suitable for the kind of data you will rarely download. (And BTW, this will probably be a long-term relationship, if we live up to our promise and offer a good and reasonably priced service.)

Plus, most users will not use 100% of the storage they purchase. We expect this to be more often in larger plans, that's why we are offering a lower price per GB.

Yes, if you store 5TB it will cost you $500 next year. But that's relatively cheap compared to most other cloud storage services.

Of course they did. 1TB costs the same in Glacier and Google Drive. Now it costs even less on Dropbox.

If you are an expert user and don't mind the technical complexities (keys, buckets, etc.) and the complicated (close to unpredictable for most) pricing scheme, Glacier will work.

deepfreeze.io makes it much easier, and offers integrations with other services too (currently only Dropbox, more soon), that allow you to transfer files between deepfreeze.io and these services on the server side -great if you don't want to re-upload 50 or 100GB, you already have in Dropbox, over your home Internet connection.

No, it's not a backup solution (even though it could be used as a secondary "backup" storage). Carbonite, Backblaze and the rest are much better at this.

But it's good if you don't want to keep files in your primary storage (i.e. your HDD) that backup services will see. A "cloud external disk" in a way.

Yes, it is built on top of S3/Glacier.

There is no "prevention". Using our experience from building longaccess.com, we have managed to aggregate and in some ways predict usage and minimise the retrieval/transfer costs (on average).

We want deepfreeze.io to integrate nicely with other "hot" cloud storage services. We started with Dropbox, but we want to offer the option to "freeze" files from Box, Google Drive, and others.

Future plans include search too.
