Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Remote: Optional, work from office in Amsterdam is fine

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: Go, Python, Django

Résumé/CV: upon request

email: hnhired@in.smil.nl

Senior Backend / Full-Stack Developer (20+ yrs exp)

I’m a highly experienced full-stack developer with 20+ years in software engineering, ranging from frontend to infrastructure and cloud. While I can work across the stack, my main interest and strongest expertise is designing and building scalable backend systems, primarily in Python and Go.

I’m comfortable working with modern infrastructure and tooling, including Kubernetes, AWS, databases, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and code reviews. I actively explore and form practical opinions on emerging technologies and trends, including LLMs and newer ecosystems like Rust.

I’ve held leadership and CTO roles in the past, but I’m currently looking to focus primarily on hands-on engineering and building products. I enjoy collaborating with teams, mentoring when useful, and contributing to engineering quality and delivery practices.

Looking for: freelance or employment opportunities Location / Work Authorization: Native Dutch / EU citizen Languages: Dutch and English (fluent)

CV and additional information available on request. If you reach out, please include what you're building and what kind of role you're hiring for.

Reason I posted this is because kagi's t-shirt shop is up, which is a bit of a weird move for a search engine. There has been some critisism on their lack of focus and giving away 20.000 free t-shirts to early supporters? I do love their search engine though...

(not affiliated with them in any way except being a paying customer)

I love kagi, so the fact that they're down sucks even harder. But they're honest and transparent about the situation. Not that "increased level of errors" or "degraded experience" nonsense

This bizarre set of tools is like the cookie wall solution. Make the solution so unusable for the end user but technically/legally correct (well, not sure actually) that you "comply" while also attempting to show how ridiculous the requirement is.

The whole marketing post was a bit TL;DR for me.

How long have you been making $3K/month? How much time (man-hours) did you invest in developing the product and were other costs involved? How much time/money does it currently cost to keep things running (e.g. updates, support, hosting)?

A decent developer can easily make $100K/yr, which is quite a lot of months of making $3000

For me the hard part about Rust is the borrowing, lifetimes stuff and this book doesn't really seem to address these.

For me that means you won't get to Production (at least not starting from Zero) since these are concept that make Rust truely different from other language and without properly grasping those, you will run into hard to understand errors and code that won't compile.

It also seriously affects how you structure your code in general.

There are plenty resources that do properly explain these concepts but in the end you will just need to get it in your system, which is what I'm currently struggling with. The flow of code as I'm used to writing in C, C++, Python or Go simply won't work for Rust

It doesn't mention any PoS solution (which are, compared to PoW) extremely energy efficient. They do mention in the FAQ that they're not included since they still depend on some sort of centralization, but as far as I know this is not true for, for example, avalanche (https://avax.network)

It's not really clear who is behind this site and if there's some hidden agenda. Let's assume not (but with crypto you can never be sure) and that they will properly consider PoS blockchains if they are as decentralized (or more) as the listed PoW chains.

Firefox Relay 5 years ago

I installed the extension. Turns out you only get 5 aliases which makes it kinda useless.

Also, it seems to forward to the address associated with your firefox account (which could end up at a mailprovider you don't want the relayed emails to go to)

I'll stick with my own *@sub.example.com forwarding setup in stead.

Firefox Relay 5 years ago

I have a similar setup, but use it on a subdomain, e.g. *@sub.example.com

This makes it harder to just randomly spam <anything>@example.com because you need the subdomain, which is what spammers do - just randomly generate local parts that might exist. info, john, sales, etc.

The switch doesn't have to happen overnight, for all contacts and groups. And you can just run them next to each other.

People have just switched messengers in the past fine; ICQ -> MSN -> google chat / fb messenger (and I probably forgot a few). I agree that Whatsapp has become more "critical infrastructure" than messengers were, but don't give up right away because it seems impossible

There are several of these kinds of mindful/imagination techniques.

https://rewiringtinnitus.com/ also provides some in book and audio form, where you visualize your tinnitus as a knob you can turn or a person making the noise.

Doesn't really work for me though, though sometimes it does seem like I can "tune" my tinnitus a bit.

I think there are many different forms (probably with different causes). My tinnitus is exclusively on the left and varies in loudness.

Clenching my teeth has always given me a tinnitus-like experience but it never bothered/interested me until I got "real" tinnitus. I understand this form of tinnitus is related to the temporomandibular joint

For me, alternating frequencies give some relieve but fortunately. I use the "tonal tinnitus therapy" app for this. I'm not sure if this is part of the mentioned new therapy (which includes electrical stimulation of the tongue?)

Judging from other peoples experiences, my tinnitus is relatively mild anyway (but still bothers me)

Als, my ENT doctor, when looking into my tinnitus complaints, asked if there's a difference when heartrate increases (and possibly bloodpressure?). This does seem to be an indication of some specific cause. For me it doesn't.
