As someone who used to work in government contracting, this comment is so freaking true.
The whole thing about contractors is so spot on. The only slight difference I would add is that the contractors will NOT hire the best talent, they will hire whoever they can to fill the position, for the cheapest price, so they can claim to have fulfilled their RFP.
It's a dead end.
Yahoo home page is actually very engaging (in a car wreck kind of way), and they haven't updated it much in years. I definitely believe they are doing well.
The only site I know that died from instant user migration is Digg. Lots of sites died a slow death from users moving on to better platforms, but rarely does anything die from boycott that I know of.

Yep. Google paid like $2 per download of Firefox. It cost like 5 cents a click, for the "download Firefox" keyword, on Google Ads to bring someone to my website. Profit.
Fun memory, I made like $40K selling Firefox downloads.... on google ads. Learned a lot about google ads and SEO.
That was a lot of money for me as a poor kid from the TL.
Around the same time, middle school I think, I was in the SF Public library playing MUD on the little terminal they reserved for searching books. We couldn't afford a computer, or internet, at home. The librarians tolerated us.
Eventually led to me learning C and running my own ROM MUD. I remember sending some random person $5 or $10 and they hosted my MUD on their server.
I too owe MUD everything.

I tried developing on a PC... For whatever reason, my development setup (probably WSDL) crashes the PC every time it goes to sleep. Tried all kinds of remedies and it never worked.
Got so fed up I deleted windows and run Linux... it's working OK. It's not Mac OS X, but at least it doesn't crash.

I might get a lot of flame for this, but I would say this is probably true of most Rails project because Rails has a lot of great standards (opinions). I am not sure why people hate Rails, I love it exactly for this reason.
You have a handful of examples you're clinging to, which show some people doing something you don't like, so EVERYONE MUST BE DOING IT.
I feel like more than 50% of this thread right now is doing exactly this and is unaware they are doing it.
To be fair though. There does exist corporations who has a proven history of trying to push a specific point of view, case and point: Fox News.
People assume that since Fox News exists, there must also exist an equal, but opposite: MSNBC, CNN, and (maybe) now Twitter or whatever...
In my opinion, this sort of false equivalencies is extremely counter productive and dangerous to our society.
It honestly feels like no matter what you buy, you get more or less the same hardware, and you’re most likely getting a heavily overpriced product just because some company printed their logo on it.
Isn't this like a known thing? Almost all peripherals on Amazon will have dozens of the exact same form-factor with different logos on it. You just buy the one that is the perfect intersection of costs, positive reviews, and shipping time. The assumption is that they all come from the same factory in China anyways.
Considering the value fast charging adds to my life, I am fine with it dying faster. I am willing to pay for that convenience. Same with cars.
Remembering to plug in my phone at night, or carrying around portable spare batteries is a thing of the past now. It's great!
Oh weird, I've never heard of this. On my Bolt, the UsbA has Android auto, but no UsbC for fast charging. I bought a UsbC cigarettes adapter which allows me to fast charge, but I lose Android auto. My solution: splice together a UsbA and UsbC cable, plug in both. Now I get both features.
Isn't this only a problem if you use usb-a to usb-c cables? This is why I hate usb-a to usb-c cables with a passion. I wish they would stop making them. I cringe thinking about how many people are missing out on fast charge capabilities because they don't know about this problem.
Are you me? This perfectly describe something I have been wanting to do recently. I really do wish that everything that connect to "MY" network I can inspect freely.
This stupid wireless lightbulb I have want to ping home to its manufacturer and I have no way to stop it. I had to go through the trouble of putting it on its own network and blocking it from everything. Very annoying. In the end I returned it because I couldn't trust it.
My RDS became unreachable for about 15 minutes.
Logistically speaking, I wonder how partnering with Amazon was not the cheapest and fastest solution.
Or even Walmart. Most of my BinaxNow tests shipped via Walmart within a week.
Lol, ain't that the truth. When the Whole Foods was still there, the chargers around there were the best. It was close to the green belt, coffee, food, and minutes walk from downtown. You could have a real nice "small town" adventure while charging. Ahh... I miss Davis.
Alas, all good things must come to an end.
People around here are not NIMBYS... We are the best consumers American consumer culture has produced. We will shop the shit out of Costco, Walmart, and the hundreds of fast food restaurants you find around here... Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, BJ's Restaurant... Hell yes, give us more! You'll never see a more /r/hailcorporate post than the NextDoor thread of a new chain restaurant arriving in town.
I think the only reason that hospital failed was because they wanted to build multiple stories... People around here have a strong aversion to tall buildings. That was like their biggest complaint. They were worried the hospital would be able to look over their fence and into their pools. Urban sprawl can't happen if we build up. LOL.
I don't live in Davis anymore, but I did live there for 10+ years and used to own a home there. I love Davis. As Sheldon Copper from Big Bang theory puts it, it's my "zero-zero-zero-zero".
While I don't consider myself a NIMBY, because I wouldn't go out of my way to stop a development project, I do appreciate how it has kept Davis a really nice place to live.
I now live in Elk Grove, there are 3 Walmart within 5 minutes of me. Urban sprawl here is ridiculous and can be measured by how many dead skunks, and homeless coyotes you find on the road because farm land and wild spaces are turning into giant air conditioned homes (which I am totally guilty of owning). Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Roseville are the same. If you want to see what happens when Davis grow into a giant city, move to one of these places.
I am not sure what my point is. I guess I am just saying that what Davis is, is not bad, it can be worse.
But for the sake of conversation, if we are going to raze small towns like Davis in the quest of more housing friendly cities, I recommend we model it after Bellevue, WA. They have skyscrapers, and it's beautiful. But then again, that just speaks to the wealth disparity more than anything else... Which is also what keeps Davis so nice.
