Because the very meaning of work would be "accomplishment" and/or "creativity". Without the pressure you mention. I know so well what it is to work for food and housing... And it's not correlate to the "sparkling" moments of my life. What is interesting with the Dutch experiment... is that it's an experiment! Less ideology and more data!
My personal pronostic. Poor people will start to act as rich people... They will start to "decide" what they are doing of their time! ;-)
I'm always surprised by the fact that the antagonism between human and machines, creativity and routines are maintained in the mind of the public. All of these articles conclude somehow with some platitudes like "machines are nothing but the result on human creativity and sophisticated algorithms are nothing but the best expression of it...".
In my view, it would be a significant contribution to find a way to drive the public to understand that an algorithm have “a meaning”. It predicts what people should like or buy just because someone have determined the features that should be taken into account (even if you put statistical learning to determine these features and you don’t decide manually). “Algorithms have meanings”… Maybe someone talented should write about that!
Example of the potential impact outside the US. 1. "Normally", this kind of patent would not have been validated in France. Which is a good thing. 2. But, as soon as this patent is validated in the US, the patent owner can ask for internationalisation and then... (talala...), it starts to be applicable in France. 3. Finally, French laws should ask local consumers and enterprises to respect this patent that would not have been validated in a first place... Here, you have a "niche" market for patent trolls?

I'm not sure that there is a good and balanced answers to your question. Here-after my personal algorithm. #1. Giving every time is not an option. My money will not be enough to save the world and I will feel upset before! #2. Throwing people away systematically doesn't feet with my very human nature. In conclusion, sometime I give. There is no good or bad people/moment. Most of the time I don't. I live with the idea that I'm not the best man in the world. Trying not the be the worst... I'm not sure if it helps...
OK! And now what are we supposed to do with sed, tr, grep, etc?? ;-)
